Synopsis The Red Sea razorfish, Xyrichtys pentadactylus, a territorial haremic labrid with dominance hierarchies within the harems. Theory predicts that primary males (fish developing initially as males) should be rare or nonexistent in haremic territorial species because the larger secondary males (males which have undergone sex and/or color change) limit access to females. Histological examination of gonads of 95 specimens showed that all males are derived from females by sex change (i.e. they are secondary males). During five months of field studies 100% of more than 200 observed matings were pair spawnings — the usual mating practice for monandric (having one type of male) species. Sex change in females was induced by male removal in nature. Isolation of four groups of females in aquaria showed that the largest female in the social group changes sex in the absence of a male, demonstrating that sex change is socially-controlled in this species. 相似文献

We continuously weighed fully distended excised or in situ canine lobes to estimate the fluid filtration coefficient (Kf) of the arterial and venous extra-alveolar vessels compared with that of the entire pulmonary circulation. Alveolar pressure was held constant at 25 cmH2O after full inflation. In the in situ lobes, the bronchial circulation was interrupted by embolization. Kf was estimated by two methods (Drake and Goldberg). Extra-alveolar vessels were isolated from alveolar vessels by embolizing enough 37- to 74-micron polystyrene beads into the lobar artery or vein to completely stop flow. In excised lobes, Kf's of the entire pulmonary circulation by the Drake and Goldberg methods were 0.122 +/- 0.041 (mean +/- SD) and 0.210 +/- 0.080 ml X min-1 X mmHg-1 X 100 g lung-1, respectively. Embolization was not found to increase the Kf's. The mean Kf's of the arterial extra-alveolar vessels were 0.068 +/- 0.014 (Drake) and 0.069 +/- 0.014 (Goldberg) (24 and 33% of the Kf's for the total pulmonary circulation). The mean Kf's of the venous extra-alveolar vessels were similar [0.046 +/- 0.020 (Drake) and 0.065 +/- 0.036 (Goldberg) or 33 and 35% of the Kf's for the total circulation]. No significant difference was found between the extra-alveolar vessel Kf's of in situ vs. excised lobes. These results suggest that when alveolar pressure, lung volume, and pulmonary vascular pressures are high, approximately one-third of the total fluid filtration comes from each of the three compartments. 相似文献

Summary Zwitterion buffers are often used to modulate the pH of cell culture medium but their effect on cultured cells is controversial.
We found that addition of 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) caused superoxide dismutase (SOD) inhibitable
increases in nitroblue tetrazolium dye reduction and SOD and catalase inhibitable decreases in the growth of cultured bovine
pulmonary artery endothelial cells. The findings suggest that HEPES stimulates endothelial cells to make toxic oxygen metabolites
that contribute to decreased cell growth.

New structural model for mixed-chain phosphatidylcholine bilayers 总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Multilamellar suspensions of a mixed-chain saturated phosphatidylcholine with 18 carbon atoms in the sn-1 chain and 10 carbon atoms in the sn-2 chain have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction techniques. The structural parameters for this lipid in the gel state are quite different than usual phosphatidylcholine bilayer phases. A symmetric and sharp wide-angle reflection at 4.11 A indicates that the hydrocarbon chains in hydrated C(18):C(10)PC bilayers are more tightly packed than in usual gel-state phosphatidylcholine bilayers and that there is no hydrocarbon chain tilt. The lipid thickness is about 12 A smaller than would be expected in a normal bilayer phase, and the area per molecule is 3 times the area per hydrocarbon chain. In addition, the bilayer thickness increases upon melting to the liquid-crystalline state, whereas normal bilayer phases decrease in thickness upon melting. On the basis of these data, we propose a new lipid packing model for gel-state C(18):C(10)PC bilayers in which the long C(18) chain spans the entire width of the hydrocarbon region of the bilayer and the short C(10) chain aligns or abuts with the C(10) chain from the apposing molecule. This model is novel in that there are three hydrocarbon chains per head group at the lipid-water interface. Calculations show that this phase is energetically favorable for mixed-chain lipids provided the long acyl chain is nearly twice the length of the shorter chain. Thermostability of PEPc from extracts (in vitro) and leaves (in situ) was significantly higher in Mississippi plants. In vitro denaturation was not appreciably modified by thermal acclimation but CO2 enrichment elicited higher thermostability of PEPc. In situ thermostability was significantly higher than that of in vitro assays and was higher in Mississippi plants acclimated at 28°/22°C and in plants of the two ecotypes grown at 675 l l-1 CO2. E

Significantly higher PEPc activity for both genotypes was observed for plants acclimated at 21°/15°C or grown at 675 l l-1 CO2. Net photosynthesis (Ps) and net assimilation rates (NAR) were higher in Québec plants and were enhanced by CO2 enrichment. NAR was higher in plants acclimated at low temperature, while an opposite trend was observed for Ps. Characterization of monoclonal B cell growth factor (BCGF) produced by a human T-T hybridoma 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We previously demonstrated the development of a cloned human T cell hybridoma that secretes B cell growth factor (BCGF) in the absence of demonstrable interleukin 2 or B cell differentiation factor. Sephadex gel filtration chromatography demonstrated the m.w. of this factor to be 18 to 20K. The present studies were performed to further characterize the biochemical properties of the molecule and to determine its target cell specificity. Temperature stability studies showed the monoclonal BCGF to be stable at 37 degrees C for 12 hr and at 70 degrees C for 15 min; however, most (93%) of the activity was lost after incubation at 70 degrees C for 30 min. Aliquots of hybridoma supernatant were exposed to buffer solutions with variable pH with no diminution in activity over a pH range of 4.0 to 10.0 BCGF activity was not affected by 2-mercaptoethanol, neuraminidase, or nucleic acid denaturing enzymes. In contrast, all activity was destroyed by 10 M urea, trypsin, and chymotrypsin. Chromatofocusing demonstrated the isoelectric point of BCGF to be 6.3 to 6.6. Finally, absorption experiments demonstrated that BCGF activity was absorbed by large, activated B cells. Mitogen-stimulated T cell blasts, small resting B cells, and CESS cells failed to absorb BCGF activity from the hybridoma supernatant. These and future studies with purified monoclonal human BCGF should enhance our understanding of its immunochemical properties and of its role in the immunoregulation of human B cell responses. 相似文献

Plasmid pIL7 (33 kilobases) from Streptococcus lactis enhances UV resistance and prophage stability. A 5.4-kilobase pIL7 fragment carrying genes coding for both characters was cloned into S. lactis, using plasmid pHV1301 as the cloning vector. The recombinant plasmid was subsequently transferred to three other S. lactis strains by transformation or protoplast fusion. Cloned genes were expressed in all tested strains. 相似文献
