Abstract We assessed age-specific natural mortality (i.e., excluding hunting mortality) and hunting mortality of 1,175 male and 1,076 female wild boar (Sus scrofa) from Chǎteauvillain-Arc en Barrois (eastern France), using a 22-year dataset (1982–2004) and mark-recapture-recovery methods. Overall yearly mortality was >50% for all sex and age-classes. Low survival was mostly due to high hunting mortality; a wild boar had a >40% of chance of being harvested annually, and this risk was as high as 70% for adult males. Natural mortality rates of wild boar were similar for males and females (approx. 0.15). These rates were comparable to rates typical of male ungulates but high for female ungulates. Wild boar survival did not vary across sex and age-classes. Despite high hunting mortality, we did not detect evidence of compensatory mortality. Whereas natural mortality for males was constant over time, female mortality varied annually, independent of fluctuations in mast availability. Female wild boar survival patterns differed from those reported in other ungulates, with high and variable natural mortality. In other ungulates, natural mortality is typically low and stable across a wide range of environmental conditions. These differences may partly reflect high litter sizes for wild boar, which carries high energetic costs. High hunting mortality may induce a high investment of females in reproduction early in life, at the detriment to survival. Despite high hunting mortality, the study population increased. Effective population control of wild boar should target a high harvest rate of piglets and reproductive females.  相似文献

Candida guilliermondii is an opportunistic emerging fungal agent of candidiasis often associated with oncology patients. This yeast also remains an interesting biotechnological model for the industrial production of value-added metabolites. The recent whole-genome sequencing of the C. guilliermondii ATCC 6260 reference strain provides an interesting resource for elucidating new molecular events supporting pathogenicity, antifungal resistance and for exploring the potential of yeast metabolic engineering. In the present study, we designed an efficient transformation system for C. guilliermondii wild-type strains using both nourseothricin- and hygromycin B-resistant markers. To demonstrate the potential of these drug-resistant cassettes, we carried out the disruption and the complementation of the C. guilliermondii FCY1 gene (which encodes cytosine deaminase) known to be associated with flucytosine sensitivity in yeast. These two new dominant selectable markers represent powerful tools to study the function of a large pallet of genes in this yeast of clinical and biotechnological interest.  相似文献

There is now little doubt that both environmental factors and genes are likely to make important contributions to the aetiology of specific language impairment (SLI). The most commonly proposed model for understanding these influences is the multifactorial model. In the present study we examine two expectations based on this model: that there will be a systematic relationship between the severity of proband language scores and the rate and severity of SLI in relatives and that relatives will be more strongly affected if they are relatives of a proband of the more rarely affected gender (female) because the latter require a higher genetic liability to become equally impaired. Ninety-three probands and their 300 first-degree relatives participated in this study. Results showed a relationship between proband severity at age 14 and an increased rate of SLI in relatives. This relationship was strong for child siblings and was significant with respect to both rate of SLI and severity over a range of language and literacy measures. In contrast, higher levels of SLI among relatives of female rather than male probands was entirely disproved.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To evaluate the acceptability and efficacy of adding cognitive behaviour therapy to the medical care of patients presenting with the chronic fatigue syndrome. DESIGN--Randomised controlled trial with final assessment at 12 months. SETTING--An infectious diseases outpatient clinic. SUBJECTS--60 consecutively referred patients meeting consensus criteria for the chronic fatigue syndrome. INTERVENTIONS--Medical care comprised assessment, advice, and follow up in general practice. Patients who received cognitive behaviour therapy were offered 16 individual weekly sessions in addition to their medical care. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--The proportions of patients (a) who achieved normal daily functioning (Karnofsky score 80 or more) and (b) who achieved a clinically significant improvement in functioning (change in Karnofsky score 10 points or more) by 12 months after randomisation. RESULTS--Only two eligible patients refused to participate. All randomised patients completed treatment. An intention to treat analysis showed that 73% (22/30) of recipients of cognitive behaviour therapy achieved a satisfactory outcome as compared with 27% (8/30) of patients who were given only medical care (difference 47 percentage points; 95% confidence interval 24 to 69). Similar differences were observed in subsidiary outcome measures. The improvement in disability among patients given cognitive behaviour therapy continued after completion of therapy. Illness beliefs and coping behaviour previously associated with a poor outcome changed more with cognitive behaviour therapy than with medical care alone. CONCLUSION--Adding cognitive behaviour therapy to the medical care of patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome is acceptable to patients and leads to a sustained reduction in functional impairment.  相似文献

Activities of promoters from the capsanthin/capsorubin synthase and fibrillin genes, which are molecular markers for ripening in the non-climacteric pepper fruits, have been studied in transgenic tomato plants that produce fruits of the climacteric type (characterized by an increase in respiration and ethylene production). The promoters of both genes were strongly upregulated during tomato fruit ripening in a manner similar to the induction of these genes in pepper fruits. Induction occurred at the mature green stage preceding ripening (a stage when ethylene production and respiration are known to rise in tomato fruits). Ethylene positively influenced the expression of both genes in tomato. Other plant growth regulators, namely abscisic acid, auxin and polyamines, did not alter gene expression. In contrast, water loss strongly induced both promoters. This dehydration-mediated gene induction was inhibited by mitochondrial respiration inhibitors (mainly of the alternative oxidase). A slight positive effect with light, apparently not linked to normal photosynthesis but rather to photooxidative stress, was also observed. Taken together, the data indicate that activation of oxidase systems, leading to changes in the cellular redox balance, mediates the induction of both genes in tomato. Various cellular compartments are likely to be contributors to this process, which leads to the developmental regulation of nuclear genes encoding plastid-located proteins.  相似文献
