There is substantial evidence from archaeology, anthropology, primatology, and psychology indicating that humans have a long evolutionary history of war. Natural selection, therefore, should have designed mental adaptations for making decisions about war. These adaptations evolved in past environments, and so they may respond to variables that were ancestrally relevant but not relevant in modern war. For example, ancestrally in small-scale combat, a skilled fighter would be more likely to survive a war and bring his side to victory. This ancestral regularity would have left its mark on modern men's intergroup psychology: more formidable men should still be more supportive of war. We test this hypothesis in four countries: Argentina, Denmark, Israel, and Romania. In three, physically strong men (but not strong women) were significantly more supportive of military action. These findings support the hypothesis that modern warfare is influenced by a psychology designed for ancestral war.  相似文献

In the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, blocks to DNA replication elongation trigger the intra-S phase checkpoint that leads to the activation of the Cds1 kinase. Cds1 is required to both prevent premature entry into mitosis and to stabilize paused replication forks. Interestingly, although Cds1 is essential to maintain the viability of mutants defective in DNA replication elongation, mutants defective in DNA replication initiation require the Chk1 kinase. This suggests that defects in DNA replication initiation can lead to activation of the DNA damage checkpoint independent of the intra-S phase checkpoint. This might result from reduced origin firing that leads to an increase in replication fork stalling or replication fork collapse that activates the G2 DNA damage checkpoint. We refer to the Chk1-dependent, Cds1-independent phenotype as the rid phenotype (for replication initiation defective). Chk1 is active in rid mutants, and rid mutant viability is dependent on the DNA damage checkpoint, and surprisingly Mrc1, a protein required for activation of Cds1. Mutations in Mrc1 that prevent activation of Cds1 have no effect on its ability to support rid mutant viability, suggesting that Mrc1 has a checkpoint-independent role in maintaining the viability of mutants defective in DNA replication initiation.  相似文献

The crisis generated by the emergence and pandemic spread of COVID-19 has thrown into the global spotlight the dangers associated with novel diseases, as well as the key role of animals, especially wild animals, as potential sources of pathogens to humans. There is a widespread demand for a new relationship with wild and domestic animals, including suggested bans on hunting, wildlife trade, wet markets or consumption of wild animals. However, such policies risk ignoring essential elements of the problem as well as alienating and increasing hardship for local communities across the world, and might be unachievable at scale. There is thus a need for a more complex package of policy and practical responses. We undertook a solution scan to identify and collate 161 possible options for reducing the risks of further epidemic disease transmission from animals to humans, including potential further SARS-CoV-2 transmission (original or variants). We include all categories of animals in our responses (i.e. wildlife, captive, unmanaged/feral and domestic livestock and pets) and focus on pathogens (especially viruses) that, once transmitted from animals to humans, could acquire epidemic potential through high rates of human-to-human transmission. This excludes measures to prevent well-known zoonotic diseases, such as rabies, that cannot readily transmit between humans. We focused solutions on societal measures, excluding the development of vaccines and other preventive therapeutic medicine and veterinary medicine options that are discussed elsewhere. We derived our solutions through reading the scientific literature, NGO position papers, and industry guidelines, collating our own experiences, and consulting experts in different fields. Herein, we review the major zoonotic transmission pathways and present an extensive list of options. The potential solutions are organised according to the key stages of the trade chain and encompass solutions that can be applied at the local, regional and international scales. This is a set of options targeted at practitioners and policy makers to encourage careful examination of possible courses of action, validating their impact and documenting outcomes.  相似文献

Quantitative methods using LC-MS/MS allow achievement of adequate sensitivity for pharmacokinetic studies with clopidogrel; three such methods, with LLOQs as low as 5 pg/mL, were developed and fully validated according to the well established FDA 2001 guidelines. The chromatographic separations were performed on reversed phase columns Ascentis RP-Amide (15 cm x 2.1 mm, 5 μm), Ascentis Express C8 (10 cm x 2.1 mm, 2.7 μm) and Ascentis Express RP Amide (10 cm x 2.1 mm, 2.7 μm), respectively. Positive electrospray ionization in MRM mode was employed for the detection and a deuterated analogue (d3-clopidogrel) was used as internal standard. Linearity, precision, extraction recovery, matrix effects and stability tests on blank plasma spiked with clopidogrel and stored in different conditions met the acceptance criteria. During the analysis of the real samples from the first pharmacokinetic study, a significant increase (>100%) of the measured clopidogrel concentrations in the extracts kept in the autosampler at 10 °C was observed. Investigations led to the conclusion that most probably a back-conversion of one or more of the clopidogrel metabolites is occurring. The next methods were optimized in order to minimize this back-conversion. After a series of experiments, the adjustment of the sample preparation (e.g. processing at low temperature and introducing a clean-up step on Supelco HybridSPE-Precipitation cartridges) has proven to be the most effective in order to improve the stability of the extracts. Incurred samples of real subjects were successfully used in the validation of the last two analytical methods to evaluate the back-conversion, while tests using only the known metabolites could not detect this important problem.  相似文献

Vertebrates express two families of gap junction proteins: the well characterized connexins and the recently discovered pannexins. The latter are related to invertebrate innexins. Here we present the hypothesis that pannexins, rather than providing a redundant system to gap junctions formed by connexins, exert a physiological role as nonjunctional membrane channels. Specifically, we propose that pannexins can serve as ATP release channels. This function presumptively is also performed by innexins in invertebrates, in addition to their traditional gap junction role.  相似文献

A recent study of the stereochemical details of chlorophyll ligation in photosystem I [Balaban et al., Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1556 (2002) 197-207] has revealed that only 14 chlorophylls out of the total 96 are ligated from the same side (syn) as the 17-propionic acid residue which is esterified with phytol. The syn chlorophylls are carefully surrounding the reaction center forming the inner core antenna system and their ligands have been strongly conserved in several species during evolution. We hypothesize here that the two dimers of closely spaced syn chlorophylls which are encountered within roughly 2 nm of P700 are the ultimate energetic traps of this light-harvesting system. Structurally very similar bacteriochlorophyll a dimers are encountered within the Fenna-Matthews-Olson protein complex and within the B850 ring of the LH2 complex of purple bacteria. The non-random disposal of these dimers lends support to our hypothesis that the syn ligation coupled with a strong excitonic interaction leads to the most red-shifted pigments in light-harvesting systems. We would like to encourage both theoretical and experimental studies to either prove or disprove this intriguing structure-function conjecture in view of designing efficient artificial light-harvesting systems.  相似文献

We investigated the nutrient uptake capacity of three lakes (Uzlina, Matita and Rosu) within the Danube Delta during high water level in June and low water level in September 1999. Special emphasis was placed on nutrient cycling at the sediment-water interface and on the self-purification capacity of the lakes in the Danube Delta. In order to estimate the nutrient uptake of selected lakes we present in this paper the results of water analyses, benthic flux chamber experiments and deck incubation experiments of 15N-labeled sediment cores at the inflow and the outlet of the lakes. The external input of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silica into the lakes decreases with increasing distance to the main Danube branches whereas the total dissolved phosphorus input is independent of the hydrological distance to the main branches. The nutrient loading is highest in the inflow channels, and decreases towards the outflow of the lakes. In June, the uptake of NO3 , TDP and Si(OH)4 in the lakes was higher than in September. In contrast, NH4 + uptake was more intense in September, when benthic release was more intense as well. On average, about 76% of the external plus internal nitrogen and phosphorus input into the lakes was taken up by macrophytes and phytoplankton during the growing season, whereas the uptake of external nutrient input amounted to about 43%. The benthic release of ammonia and silica increases from June to September and indicates, that part of the nutrients taken up during the growing season might be released during winter. We estimate the net impact of the Delta on the nutrient reduction of the Danube during the growing season is about 4.3%, assuming 10% of the Danube water is flowing through the Delta.  相似文献

Air microbial pollution in touristic areas poses a risk for both the integrity of an ecosystem and human health. Microbiological monitoring together with environmental parameters monitoring allows for the assessment of the impacts and formulation of sound management decisions to protect humans and ecosystems. Four show caves from the Carpathian Mountains were selected for our study. The caves were sampled monthly to obtain an overview of the changes that occur over a yearly cycle. For the microbial monitoring, we used RIDA®COUNT test plates, while the environmental parameters were monitored with a variety of devices. Second and third generations of microbes extracted from the plates were grown on specific media for the purpose of 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA extraction and taxa identification. The bacterial communities identified in the air samples in the four investigated show caves were dominated by Staphylococcus, while regarding the fungi communities, Penicillium was more likely to occur in the touristic part of the caves and Cladosporium in the non-visited passages. Together with data on number of visitors, number of bats and radon levels we were able understand the impact of tourists on the cave environment and to generate microbiological risk maps for human health. This type of comprehensive study can be used not only to protect the integrity of a touristic area from the impacts caused by the introduction of allochthonous organic matter, but also for the protection of the tourists and guides from potential pathogenic taxa.  相似文献
