Our objective was to test whether accurate growth analyses can be obtained from anatomical records and some mathematical formulas. Roots of Zea mays L. were grown at one of two temperatures (19°C or 29°C) and were prepared with standard techniques for light microscopy. Positions of cell walls were digitized from micrographs. The digitized data were averaged and smoothed and used in formulas to estimate growth trajectories, Z(t), velocities, v(z), and strain rates, r(z), where Z(t) is the location occupied by the cellular particle at time t; and v(z) and r(z) are, respectively, the fields of growth velocity and strain rate. The relationships tested are: for Z(t), t = n * c; v(z) = l(z) * f; and r(z) = f * (/z (l(z))). In the formulas, n represents the number of cells between the origin and the position Z(t); l(z) is local cell length; the constant c, named the `cellochron,' denotes the time for successive cells to pass a spatial point distal to the meristem; l(z) is local cell length, and f is cell flux. Growth trajectories and velocity fields from the anatomical method are in good agreement with earlier analyses based on marking experiments at the two different temperatures. Growth strain rate fields show an unexpected oscillation which may be due to numerical artifacts or to a real oscillation in cell production rate.  相似文献

The ability of particular cell surface glycoproteins to recycle and become exposed to individual Golgi enzymes has been demonstrated. This study was designed to determine whether endocytic trafficking includes significant reentry into the overall oligosaccharide processing pathway. The Lec1 mutant of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells lack N - acetylglucosaminyltransferase I (GlcNAc-TI) activity resulting in surface expression of incompletely processed Man5GlcNAc2 N -linked oligosaccharides. An oligosaccharide tracer was created by exoglycosylation of cell surface glycoproteins with purified porcine GlcNAc-TI and UDP-[3H]GlcNAc. Upon reculturing, all cell surface glycoproteins that acquired [3H]GlcNAc were acted upon by intracellular mannosidase II, the next enzyme in the Golgi processing pathway of complex N -linked oligosaccharides (t1/2= 3-4 h). That all radiolabeled cell surface glycoproteins were included in this endocytic pathway indicates a common intracellular compartment into which endocytosed cell surface glycoproteins return. Significantly, no evidence was found for continued oligosaccharide processing consistent with transit through the latter cisternae of the Golgi apparatus. These data indicate that, although recycling plasma membrane glycoproteins can be reexposed to individual Golgi-derived enzymes, significant reentry into the overall contiguous processing pathway is not evident.   相似文献

In a group of captive bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) housed at the California Primate Research Center, variance in reproductive success among females is primarily due to differences in infant survival. The infants of low-ranking females have a smaller probability of surviving to 6 months of age than do the infants of other females. In addition, the juvenile daughters of low-ranking females are more vulnerable to behaviourally induced mortality than are other immature animals. Observational evidence indicates that this mortality is the direct result of aggression by unrelated, higherranking adult females. Although infants' sex is not consistently related to survival, yearly fluctuations in the survival of male and female infants are reflected in the extent and direction of the skew in the sex ratio of offspring produced the following year. Years in which the highest proportion of male infants survive are followed by years in which the largest proportions of the birth cohorts are composed of males, and years in which the largest proportions of females survive are followed by years in which the largest proportions of birth cohorts are composed of females. For infant females the probability of surviving is reduced when a substantial proportion of the birth cohort is composed of females. The same pattern is evident among the sons of low-ranking females. The adaptive significance of behaviourally induced variation in reproductive success among females is considered in relation to these data.  相似文献

Lemna protein per frond and per root increases with developmental stage until plants are at least two generations old. Protein per frond, per root, and per unit dry weight is greater in plants grown at 23.9 C than at 18.3 C. More protein is found in fronds than in roots, and more nitrate occurs in roots than in fronds. Nitrate per root increases with developmental stage and is higher (per root) in plants grown at 23.9 C than in those grown at 18.3 C. The distribution of generations within a growing population is constant for at least eight doubling times. Whether populations multiply slowly at 15.6 C or more rapidly at 23.9 C, fronds which have not yet produced progeny form 62% of the population; fronds which are one generation old form 24% of the population; and fronds which are two generations old form 9% of the population.  相似文献

Contact networks are fundamental to the transmission of infection and host sex often affects the acquisition and progression of infection. However, the epidemiological impacts of sex‐related variation in animal contact networks have rarely been investigated. We test the hypothesis that sex‐biases in infection are related to variation in multilayer contact networks structured by sex in a population of European badgers Meles meles naturally infected with Mycobacterium bovis. Our key results are that male‐male and between‐sex networks are structured at broader spatial scales than female‐female networks and that in male‐male and between‐sex contact networks, but not female‐female networks, there is a significant relationship between infection and contacts with individuals in other groups. These sex differences in social behaviour may underpin male‐biased acquisition of infection and may result in males being responsible for more between‐group transmission. This highlights the importance of sex‐related variation in host behaviour when managing animal diseases.  相似文献

The dominance rank of male bonnet macaques influenced their associations and sexual interactions with cycling and conceiving females. Only high-ranking males formed exclusive associations with high-ranking females, and high-ranking males copulated with these females more often than did other males. Changes in male dominance rank were directly related to changes in male mating behaviour, as males who rose in rank spent increasing amounts of time in exclusive proximity to conceiving high-ranking females, and males whose ranks declined spent decreasing amounts of time in proximity to such females. The year of the study in which dominance relationships were most stable was also the year in which the top-ranking male most successfully monopolized access to conceiving high-ranking females.  相似文献
