This article was prepared prior to the author's employment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and therefore does not necessarily represent agency policy. Sediments provide needed habitats to valued aquatic and marine resources and are therefore an integral and valuable component of any coastal ecosystem. Studies have found that multiple anthropogenic activities have been the primary cause of sediment contamination. There is continued evidence that contaminated sediments pose adverse impacts to biological resources even when overlying water quality is acceptable. Efforts in environmental protection should therefore incorporate sediment quality management strategies. Despite a growing awareness and interest in management of contaminated sediment, no established systematic and standardized national management program has been established in the U.S. The establishment of a national sediment policy in the U.S. would reinforce the importance of integrating sediment issues with different management objectives and reiterate the importance of protecting sediments as a natural resource. A national sediment policy could also guide and direct states in developing state sediment policies that reflect national objectives while integrating local concerns. This perspective identifies and defines issues and concerns raised by 13 states’ agency staff in managing contaminated sediments in the absence of a national policy. Recommendations are developed that address sociopolitical and scientific issues and concerns. The recommendations are integrated with stakeholder comments, state manager needs and the existing regulatory and institutional framework.  相似文献

Intermittently incubating birds alternate between sessions of egg warming and recesses for foraging during the day, but stay on the nest continuously at night. Hence, energy costs of nocturnal incubation (which increase during longer and colder nights) cannot be replenished until the next day. Night conditions might therefore be expected to affect morning incubation behaviour the day after. We tested this prediction by exploring latitudinal and seasonal trends in characteristics of the first recess in Eastern Bluebirds Sialia sialis over a 1400-km latitudinal gradient in the continental USA. The time from civil dawn to leaving the nest (latency) increased with latitude early in the breeding season but decreased with latitude late in the season. Birds breeding at higher latitudes also took longer first recesses throughout the season, which led to a larger drop in nest temperature. At the local scale, birds rose earlier after longer nights if the night was also cold, but night length did not predict latency following warm nights. The first recess was longer if the night was warmer, probably because birds could replenish reserves at lower risk of low egg temperature. Our study shows that characteristics of the night led to behavioural changes in features of early morning incubation that were evident at both continental and local scales. These responses also affected nest temperature. Hence, night conditions carry over to incubation behaviour the following morning, which in turn may impose thermal constraints on embryonic development.  相似文献

Animals typically respond to stressful stimuli such as handling by increasing core body temperature. However, small birds in cold environments have been found to decrease body temperature (Tb) when handled over longer periods, although there are no data extending beyond the actual handling event in such birds. We therefore measured both the initial Tb decrease during ringing and standardized Tb sampling, and subsequent recovery of Tb after this handling protocol in wild Great Tits Parus major roosting in nestboxes in winter. Birds reduced their Tb by 2.3 °C during c. 4 min of handling. When birds were returned to their nestboxes after handling, Tb decreased by a further 1.9 °C over c. 2 min, reaching a Tb of 34.6 °C before taking 20 min to rewarm to 2.5 °C above their initial Tb. The Tb reduction during handling could be a consequence of increased heat loss rate from disrupted plumage insulation, whereas Tb reduction after handling might reflect reduced heat production. These are important factors to consider when handling small birds in the cold.  相似文献

Very old, undisturbed forest stands may be important for biodiversity through their content of microhabitats or for the long periods available for colonisation, or for both. The term Ecological Continuity (EC) has been used to ascribe value to old forest stands. The relative importance of microhabitat and time for colonisation are usually not kept apart when EC is used as a conservation criterium. EC is broadly applied but poorly defined. Use of EC may lead to underestimation of the importance of forest dynamics and dispersal, and to overestimation of the importance of local land use history. If bioindicators of long-term habitat persistence are to be used, species with low dispersal capacity should be chosen. However, many lichens and other fungi, bryophytes and insects cited as indicators of EC, seem to have a patch-tracking lifestyle. They are 'colonists' according to life history strategy classification, and rather seem to indicate specific microhabitats. Terrestrial molluscs, some vascular forest plants, and those bryophytes and lichenized fungi classified as 'perennial stayers' in life history strategy classification, might be used to indicate long-term habitat persistence in forests, but more research is needed to evaluate such indicators.  相似文献
