By dispersing from localized aggregations of recruits, individuals may obtain energetic benefits due to reduced experienced density. However, this will depend on the spatial scale over which individuals compete. Here, we quantify this scale for juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) following emergence and dispersal from nests. A single nest was placed in each of ten replicate streams during winter, and information on the individual positions (±1 m) and the body sizes of the resulting young-of-the-year (YOY) juveniles was obtained by sampling during the summer. In six of the ten streams, model comparisons suggested that individual body size was most closely related to the density within a mean distance of 11 m (range 2–26 m). A link between body size and density on such a restricted spatial scale suggests that dispersal from nests confers energetic benefits that can counterbalance any survival costs. For the four remaining streams, which had a high abundance of trout and older salmon cohorts, no single spatial scale could best describe the relation between YOY density and body size. Energetic benefits of dispersal associated with reduced local density therefore appear to depend on the abundance of competing cohorts or species, which have spatial distributions that are less predictable in terms of distance from nests. Thus, given a trade-off between costs and benefits associated with dispersal, and variation in benefits among environments, we predict an evolving and/or phenotypically plastic growth rate threshold which determines when an individual decides to disperse from areas of high local density.  相似文献

Michael addition of 1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-6-thio-alpha-D-galactose (2) to 2-propyl 6-O-acetyl-3,4-dideoxy-alpha-D-glycero-hex-3-enopyranosid-2-ulose (1) afforded, as the major diastereoisomer, 2-propyl 6-O-acetyl-3-deoxy-4-S-(6-deoxy-1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-galactopyranos-6-yl)-4-thio-alpha-D-threo-hexopyranosid-2-ulose (3, 91% yield). Reduction of the carbonyl group of 3, followed by O-deacetylation gave the two epimers 7 (alpha-D-lyxo) and 8 (alpha-D-xylo) in a 1:2 ratio. On removal of the protecting groups of 8 by acid hydrolysis, formation of an 1,6-anhydro bridge was observed in the 3-deoxy-4-thiohexopyranose unit (10). The free non-glycosidic thioether-linked disaccharide 3-deoxy-4-S-(6-deoxy-alpha,beta-D-galactopyranos-6-yl)-4-thio-alpha,beta-D-xylo-hexopyranose (11) was obtained by acetolysis of 10 followed by O-deacetylation. A similar sequence starting from the enone 1 and methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-benzoyl-6-thio-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (12) led successfully to 2-propyl 3-deoxy-4-S-(methyl 6-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranos-6-yl)-4-thio-alpha-D-lyxo-hexopyranoside (17) and its alpha-D-xylo analog (19, major product). In this synthetic route, orthogonal sets of protecting groups were employed to preserve the configuration of both reducing ends and to avoid the formation of the 1,6-anhydro ring.  相似文献

An important consequence of habitat fragmentation is the increase of edge habitats. Environmental factors in the edges are different from those in the interiors, which causes changes in the distribution of plant and animal species. We aimed to study how edges affect the distribution of two butterfly species within meadow fragments. We therefore investigated the effect of distance from edge and edge type (road edge versus tree edge) on two sympatric large blue species (Maculinea teleius and M. nausithous). Our results showed that edge type had contrasting effects on the two species. M. teleius favoured both interiors and road edges, while M. nausithous preferred the tree edges. In the case of the latter species a strong positive edge effect was also found. This kind of within-habitat niche segregation is probably related to the different microenvironmental conditions at the edges. Foodplant density did not seem to limit the distribution of these species. Our results suggest that interiors of meadows are important for M. teleius, while tree edges maintain the habitats of the regionally rarer butterfly, M. nausithous.  相似文献

This minireview looks back at a century of glycolysis research with a focus on the mechanisms of flux regulation. Traditionally, glycolysis is regarded as a feeder pathway that prepares glucose for further catabolism and energy production. However, glycolysis is much more than that, in particular in those tissues that express the low affinity glucose-phosphorylating enzyme glucokinase. This enzyme equips the glycolytic pathway with a special steering function for the regulation of intermediary metabolism. In beta cells, glycolysis acts as a transducer for triggering and amplifying physiological glucose-induced insulin secretion. On the basis of these considerations, I have defined a glycolytic flux regulatory unit composed of the two fructose ester steps of this pathway with various enzymes and metabolites that regulate glycolysis.  相似文献

The role of endogenous estrogens has been studied in the regulation of the Ca-dependent constitutive nitric oxide synthase (cNOS) enzyme activity in aortic and cardiac tissues of the rat. The activity of cNOS enzyme was measured by the citrulline assay in the abdominal aorta and in the left ventricle of the heart obtained from male, sham-operated female and ovariectomized female Wistar rats. Estrogen replacement therapy (17-beta-estradiol, 20-100 microg/kg/day, s.c.) has been performed in ovariectomized rats over two weeks. We found that cNOS activity was higher in the aorta and heart of female rats compared to males. Ovariectomy decreased cNOS activity in both tissues to that level what could be observed in males. Estrogen supplementation caused a dose-dependent elevation of cNOS enzyme activity in cardiac and aortic tissues, where the higher dose (100 microg) completely restored cNOS enzyme activity to the levels found in females. We concluded that endogenous estrogens up-regulate the activity of the cNOS isoenzymes in the rat aorta and heart.  相似文献

In silico molecular docking of the trimer repeating unit of chondroitin sulfate (sulfated hexasaccharide) and tetramer repeating unit of heparin (sulfated octasaccharide) to the 3D model of bovine testicular hyaluronidase by the methods of computational chemistry demonstrated the presence of eight significant binding sites for these ligands (cs1–cs8). The interaction of the active site of the enzyme with the heparin ligand, which inactivates the enzyme, and the protective effect of the chondroitin sulfate ligands bound to the surface sites of the biocatalyst molecule were theoretically studied using calculation approaches. We sequentially determined binding sites for the chondroitin sulfate ligands (in positions cs2, cs4, cs7, cs8 or cs1, cs2, cs4, cs7, cs8) critical for the protein structure stabilization, whose occupancy is theoretically sufficient to prevent irreversible deformations of the enzyme molecule when the heparin ligand is introduced into the cavity of its active site. Theoretical detection of these ‘sensibility points’ on the hyaluronidase globule indicates the possibility of regulating its functioning under the binding of the glycosaminoglycan ligands that initiate the fine formation of an effective type of the surface electrostatic potential. The interaction of the glycosaminoglycan ligands with hyaluronidase is mainly determined by electrostatic forces.  相似文献

Palaeoxenus sinensis Chang, Muona & Teräväinen sp. nov. (Coleoptera, Eucnemidae) is described on the basis of a Cretaceous larva found from the Yixian Formation in Huangbanjigou, Liaoning Province, China. The only previously known member of this clade is a southern Californian endemic, Dohrn's elegant eucnemid beetle (Palaeoxenus dohrni), a species that develops in conifers, especially the incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens). The new find proves that the highly specialized main eucnemid lineages had evolved 123 Mya, before the main radiation of the angiosperms and probably as an adaptation to development in gymnosperms.  相似文献

To select a Saccharomyces cerevisiae reference strain amenable to experimental techniques used in (molecular) genetic, physiological and biochemical engineering research, a variety of properties were studied in four diploid, prototrophic laboratory strains. The following parameters were investigated: 1) maximum specific growth rate in shake-flask cultures; 2) biomass yields on glucose during growth on defined media in batch cultures and steady-state chemostat cultures under controlled conditions with respect to pH and dissolved oxygen concentration; 3) the critical specific growth rate above which aerobic fermentation becomes apparent in glucose-limited accelerostat cultures; 4) sporulation and mating efficiency; and 5) transformation efficiency via the lithium-acetate, bicine, and electroporation methods. On the basis of physiological as well as genetic properties, strains from the CEN.PK family were selected as a platform for cell-factory research on the stoichiometry and kinetics of growth and product formation.  相似文献
