Monoamine oxidase (MAO) was characterized in tissue homogenates from rat pancreatic islets, rat neurohypophysis and adenohypophysis, and rat and bovine adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex. Phenylethylamine was preferentially deaminated by rat pancreatic islet and bovine adrenal medulla MAO and with slight preference by rat neurohypophysis MAO, whereas 5-hydroxytryptamine was preferentially deaminated by MAO from all other endocrine tissues. Tyramine was a good substrate for all tissues. Clorgyline, a selective inhibitor of MAO-A, preferentially inhibited deamination of 5-hydroxytryptamine by all tissue homogenates, whereas deprenyl, a selective inhibitor of MAO-B, preferentially inhibited deamination of phenylethylamine. Km values for 5-hydroxytryptamine and tyramine were higher by one to two decimal powers than for phenylethylamine in homogenates from all endocrine tissues. Km values were significantly lower for 5-hydroxytryptamine and significantly higher for phenylethylamine in rat and bovine adrenal cortex than in adrenal medulla. According to these results, the contributions of MAO-B to total enzyme activity were 70% for rat pancreatic islets, 45% for rat neurohypophysis, 15% for rat adenohypophysis, 20% for rat adrenal medulla, 10% for rat adrenal cortex, 60% for bovine adrenal medulla, and 20% for bovine adrenal cortex. PC 12 cells also contained predominantly MAO-A (90%); however, an increased Km for phenylethylamine and a sensitivity of deamination of this MAO-B substrate to inhibition by clorgyline are indicators of abnormal behavior of MAO in this clonal rat pheochromocytoma cell line. 相似文献

Triage is a widespread principle for prioritizing patients in emergency departments. The purpose of triage is to ensure that in emergency situations, whenever medical demand exceeds medical supply, limited resources should be directed to the case with the greatest clinical need. Triage fulfills this purpose by ranking patients according to how acute their condition is and then giving priority to the most acute ones. In this paper, I argue that this current practice of triage needs to be supplemented. Contemporary triage is based on a principle of preserving patients’ core capabilities, which is relevant when it comes to prioritizing acute patients above sub-acute ones, but not for prioritizing among sub-acute patients, which is the largest group of emergency patients. Henceforth, I propose to supplement triage with what I term the real dialogue model, a framework that, when combined with enhanced professional autonomy for clinical decision-makers, enables fair prioritizing among sub-acute patients. 相似文献

Marine recreational fishing is a popular outdoor activity. However, knowledge about the magnitude of recreational catches relative to commercial catches in coastal fisheries is generally sparse. Coastal Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is a target species for recreational fishers in the North Atlantic. In Norway, recreational fishers are allowed to use a variety of traps and nets as well as long-line and rod and line when fishing for cod. From 2005 to 2013, 9729 cod (mean size: 40 cm, range: 15–93 cm) were tagged and released in coastal Skagerrak, southeast Norway. Both high-reward (NOK 500) and low-reward tags (NOK 50) were used in this study. Because some harvested fish (even those posting high-reward tags) may go unreported by fishers, reporting rates were estimated from mark-recovery models that incorporate detection parameters in their structure, in addition to survival and mortality estimates. During 2005 to 2013, a total of 1707 tagged cod were recovered and reported by fishers. We estimate the overall annual survival to be 33% (SE 1.5). Recreational rod and line fishing were responsible for 33.7% (SE 2.4) of total mortality, followed by commercial fisheries (15.1% SE 0.8) and recreational fixed gear (6.8% SE 0.4). Natural mortality was 44.4% (SE 2.5) of total mortality. Our findings suggest that recreational fishing—rod and line fishing in particular—is responsible for a substantial part of fishing mortality exerted on coastal cod in southern Norway. 相似文献

Type 1 diabetes may depend on cytokine-induced β-cell death and therefore the current investigation was performed in order to elucidate this response in Shb-deficient islets.A combination of interleukin-1β and interferon-γ caused a diminished β-cell death response in Shb null islets. Furthermore, the induction of an unfolded protein response (UPR) by adding cyclopiazonic acid did not increase cell death in Shb-deficient islets, despite simultaneous expression of UPR markers. The heat-shock protein Hsp70 was more efficiently induced in Shb knockout islets, providing an explanation for the decreased susceptibility of Shb-deficient islets to cytokines.It is concluded that islets deficient in the Shb protein are less susceptible to cytotoxic conditions, and that this partly depends on their increased ability to induce Hsp70 under such circumstances. Interference with Shb signaling may provide means to improve β-cell viability under conditions of β-cell stress. 相似文献

Summary Isoionic exchange of phosphate was studied in aqueous suspensions of two British and four paddy soils under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Linear relationships between the logarithms of the P32-concentration in solution and the logarithm of time elapsed after application of P32 to the suspensions were observed under the two contrasting conditions. Using a rate equation for recrystallization, the calculated reaction orders ranged from 4.0 to 6.8. Based on these values it is believed that hydroxyapatite was present in at least some of the soils. Anaerobic treatment of the soils produced higher pH, phosphorus and iron in solution, isotopically exchangeable phosphorus, and reaction order values than did aerabic treatment. 相似文献

Germination of the holoparasitic angiosperm Boschniakia hookeri differs from the usual pattern among the Orobanchaceae. In most members of the family, the germinating seed develops a radix which establishes contact with the host root; in contrast, in B. hookeri the host root makes contact with the parasite seed, penetrates its testa, and association between host root and parasite embryo tissues is then established inside the testa.
The germination and development of the perennial vegetative body, the soma, can be divided into ten stages, with characteristic changes from stage to stage. The first four stages range from the pre–germination through the germination proper, including physical contact between parasite and host root; formation of the soma, through development of the first stem bud, occurs in stages five to ten. The processes for the first six stages occur completely within the testa.

Releases of cultured organisms, such as farm Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), threaten native biodiversity and the integrity of natural communities. Salmon escaping from sea farms, however, have relatively poor reproductive success, suggesting that the rate of spread of domesticated traits may be reduced. We now compare the relative reproductive success of males that mature precociously in freshwater (parr) and find that those of farm origin have higher breeding and fertilization success than wild and hybrid individuals. Specifically, hybrid parr had 57% and wild parr 25% the success of farm parr. Early maturing males could thus be important vehicles promoting introgression of domesticated and/or non‐native traits into wild populations and ultimately have long‐term impact on the genetic integrity of native populations. 相似文献

In literature, a synergism between histamine H(1) and H(4) receptor is discussed. Furthermore, it was shown, that the combined application of mepyramine, a H(1) antagonist and JNJ7777120, a H(4) receptor ligand leads to a synergistic effect in the acute murine asthma model. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop new hybrid ligands, containing one H(1) and one H(4) pharmacophor, connected by an appropriate spacer, in order to address both, H(1)R and H(4)R. Within this study, we synthesized nine hybrid compounds, which were pharmacologically characterized at hH(1)R and hH(4)R. The new compounds revealed (high) affinity to hH(1)R, but showed only low affinity to hH(4)R. Additionally, we performed molecular dynamic studies for some selected compounds at hH(1)R, in order to obtain information about the binding mode of these compounds on molecular level. 相似文献
