This study investigates several musculoskeletal scapular correlates of quadrupedal behavior in predominantly plantigrade, Papio cynocephalus anubis and acrobatic, less plantigrade, Macaca fascicularis. Positional behaviors differ in these two primates reflecting the amount of time spent emphasizing one or the other of these captive behavioral regimes. Stresses associated with particular patterns of behavior result in different scapular morphologies. Papio exhibits a significantly broader scapula with a more dorsoventrally curved blade accompanying an enlarged teres major muscle. The supraspinous fossa is wider in Papio, while the infraspinous/teres major attachment is wider in Macaca. Angular measurements reflect the breadth dimension of the various fossae. These results utilize two species of primates to extend a methodology developed in previous studies and to suggest that a predictable interdependence occurs between scapular dimensions and certain behavioral activities.  相似文献

African trypanosomes express three virtually identical glutathione peroxidase (Px)‐type enzymes that occur in the cytosol (Px I and II) and mitochondrion (Px III) and detoxify fatty acid‐derived hydroperoxides. Selective deletion of the genes revealed that procyclic Trypanosoma brucei lacking either the cytosolic or mitochondrial enzyme proliferate nearly as wild‐type parasites, whereas the knockout of the complete genomic locus is lethal. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence analyses revealed that the Px I‐III‐deficient parasites lose their mitochondrial membrane potential, which is followed by a loss of the lysosomal signal but not the glycosomal one. Mitochondrial damage and cell lysis are prevented by Trolox, ubiquinone derivatives and the iron chelator deferoxamine, whereas starch‐deferoxamine is inefficient. In glucose‐rich medium, cell death is attenuated suggesting that oxidants generated by the respiratory chain contribute to the lethal phenotype. Thus, the Px‐type peroxidases protect procyclic cells from an iron‐mediated oxidative membrane damage that originates at the mitochondrion. This contrasts with the situation in bloodstream cells, where the lysosome is the primarily affected organelle. Strikingly, either the cytosolic or the mitochondrial form of the peroxidases is required and sufficient to protect the mitochondrion and prevent cell lysis.  相似文献

Lepidospartum burgessii is a rare gypsophilic shrub with limited distribution in New Mexico and Texas. Most of the known plants are restricted to two large populations, with a few small, isolated populations scattered in the surrounding area. The low recruitment observed in the two largest populations may be due to low seed set resulting from high inbreeding and/or self-incompatibility. We used eight microsatellite loci to quantify diversity, relatedness, inbreeding, population structure, and frequency of clonal reproduction. Seed collections were made to quantify seed set and germination rates. Overall, there was a moderate level of clonal diversity within patches of L. burgessii indicating asexual growth is important for population persistence. Inbreeding coefficients were high both between and within populations. Most patches showed a significant level of relatedness between individuals. At a fine scale, patches within populations were significantly different from each other, however when all patches were combined, the two populations of L. burgessii were not genetically distinct. Compared to a population of its common congener, Lepidospartum latisquamum, L. burgessii populations had similar measures of diversity, more clonal reproduction, and lower germination rates. High relatedness and inbreeding may explain the low seed set and recruitment in L. burgessii, however factors such as insect herbivory and precipitation changes may further depress recruitment.  相似文献

Different modes of genetic interaction indicate different functional relationships between genes. The extraction of biological information from dense multi-mode genetic-interaction networks demands appropriate statistical and computational methods. We developed such methods and implemented them in open-source software. Motifs extracted from multi-mode genetic-interaction networks form functional subnetworks, highlight genes dominating these subnetworks, and reveal genetic reflections of the underlying biochemical system.  相似文献

Activation of murine T cells by antigen, antibodies binding the T cell antigen receptor, or stimulatory anti-Thy-1 antibodies results in rapid phosphorylation of the T cell receptor zeta chain on tyrosine residues. The T cell receptor is itself unlikely to be a tyrosine kinase; rather, it is probable that this receptor is coupled to a nonreceptor tyrosine kinase. To understand further this protein kinase pathway, additional targets of the tyrosine kinase have been sought by comparing anti-phosphotyrosine antibody immunoblots of cellular proteins from unactivated and activated T cell hybridomas. In addition to the T cell receptor zeta chain, two proteins of 53 and 62 kDa are phosphorylated on tyrosine residues after T cell activation. These phosphorylations require stimulatory anti-Thy-1 antibodies, antigen, or antireceptor antibody stimulation. The 53-kDa protein is preferentially phosphorylated by antigen or antireceptor antibody. Of interest is that variants of the murine T cell hybridoma lacking the T cell receptor zeta chain or lacking surface antigen receptor can nonetheless be stimulated by anti-Thy-1 antibodies to phosphorylate the 62-kDa substrate. In contrast to the tyrosine kinases of oncogenic viruses, the kinase coupled to the T cell antigen receptor appears to have a limited number of targets. These proteins are candidates for critical substrates in this protein tyrosine kinase pathway.  相似文献

Effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) on feed intake were evaluated in two lines of White Plymouth Rock chickens that have been selected from a common base population for high (HWS) or low (LWS) juvenile body weight. Both lines responded with reduced feed intake after ICV CRF; however, the threshold of response was lower in line LWS than HWS. Additionally, the effects of two receptor antagonists, astressin and alpha-helical CRF (9-41; alpha-CRF), and the effect of CRF fragment 6-33, (which displaces CRF from its binding protein), were evaluated in these lines. Although all three antagonists increased feed intake in line LWS but not line HWS, they attenuated the appetite-reducing effects of CRF only in line HWS. Peripheral plasma corticosterone concentrations after an acute stressor were higher in line LWS than in line HWS. These data support the thesis of correlated responses in the CRF system to selection for high or low juvenile body weight. These differences may contribute to differential feed intake, and hence altered body weights.  相似文献
