One of the main issues in community ecology is the detection of structure and the identification of its related causes. In this study, co-occurrence null models were used to identify possible spatio-temporal patterns in the assemblage of aquatic macrophytes in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program at two different grains: (1) a coarser spatial grain in January and August 2001 (entire floodplain lagoons); (2) and a finer spatial grain in November 2006 (1 m2 quadrats). The study was conducted in 36 lagoons, both connected and disconnected to the main river channel, located in the sub-basins of the Baía, Ivinheima and Paraná rivers. Two null models of species co-occurrence, the C-Score and Checkerboard indices, were used to test the null hypothesis of random structure of the aquatic macrophyte assemblages. The null models showed that the aquatic macrophyte assemblages were spatially structured in the distinct spatial grains. However, despite this general pattern, macrophyte assemblages are organized differently depending on the degree of connectivity, seasonal period and, at a finer grain, depth. Species co-occurrences were random in the disconnected lagoons during flood periods, in deep zones of the lagoons of the Baía River and in the shallow littoral zone in the lagoons of the Paraná River. Analysis of the patterns of co-occurrence indicated that competition and/or habitat preferences are probably important influences on the nonrandom structure of assemblages. However, we suppose that at least three important factors (disturbances by water level fluctuation, dispersion and facilitation) counteract potential effects of competition in specific situations, leading macrophyte assemblages to assume random structure.  相似文献

The number of citations that papers receive has become significant in measuring researchers'' scientific productivity, and such measurements are important when one seeks career opportunities and research funding. Skewed citation practices can thus have profound effects on academic careers. We investigated (i) how frequently authors misinterpret original information and (ii) how frequently authors inappropriately cite reviews instead of the articles upon which the reviews are based. To reach this aim, we carried a survey of ecology journals indexed in the Web of Science and assessed the appropriateness of citations of review papers. Reviews were significantly more often cited than regular articles. In addition, 22% of citations were inaccurate, and another 15% unfairly gave credit to the review authors for other scientists'' ideas. These practices should be stopped, mainly through more open discussion among mentors, researchers and students.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to describe the sexual characteristics of domestic queens kept under natural equatorial photoperiod conditions without mating. Estrous signs were detected in 25 pubertal queens by manual stimulation and by exposure to a tomcat twice daily for 6 months (January to June). The signs observed were tail deflection, spinal flexion, rubbing or rolling, vaginal discharge, vocalization, treading of the hind legs, body or tail tremor and rigidity, blow or scratches, and discomfort on manipulation. The queen was considered in estrous when neck grip, tail deflection and attempted penile intromission by the male were allowed after mounting. From 187 cycles, there were (mean +/- S.E.M.) 7.5 +/- 0.7 cycles detected per queen; the duration of the cycle, estrus and non-acceptance were 18.1 +/- 0.9, 7.9 +/- 0.5, and 10.3 +/- 0.9 d, respectively. Queens always maintained some signs of sexual behaviour; they remained ambivalent for no more than 24 h at a time. It was noted that 85.3% of the observations of body or tail tremor and rigidity were made during estrus; therefore, these signs were considered characteristic of sexual receptivity. There was no evidence of prolonged anestrus or of a circannual pattern to estrus cyclicity.  相似文献

The tree changes of 1.02 ha of montane forest at the Santa Lúcia Biological Station, southeastern Brazil, were analyzed using two surveys separated by an interval of 11 years with the aim of confirming the patterns of stability of structure and diversity over time. In the original survey all trees with diameter at breast height ≥6.4 cm were sampled. In second survey (this study), dead trees, survivors and recruits in the same forest were reported. The data suggest a dynamic balance of the forest structure because mortality (−1.06% year−1 for number of trees and −0.85% year−1 for basal area) was very close to recruitment (0.89% year−1) and ingrowth (1.05% year−1). The high diversity of the original survey (H′ > 5.2) was maintained by the turnover species. The main tree populations also showed stability of number of trees and basal area. This pattern was shared by most of the 28 local endemic species, ensuring the maintenance of their populations in the plot.  相似文献

Genomic islands are DNA regions containing variable genetic information related to secondary metabolism. Frequently, they have the ability to excise from and integrate into replicons through site-specific recombination. Thus, they are usually flanked by short direct repeats that act as attachment sites, and contain genes for an integrase and an excisionase which carry out the genetic exchange. These mobility events would be at the basis of the horizontal transfer of genomic islands among bacteria.Microcin H47 is a ribosomally-synthesized antibacterial peptide that belongs to the group of chromosome-encoded microcins. The 13 kb-genetic system responsible for its production resides in the chromosome of the Escherichia coli H47 strain and is flanked by extensive and imperfect direct repeats. In this work, both excision and integration of the microcin H47 system were experimentally detected. The analyses were mainly performed in E. coli K12 cells carrying the microcin system cloned in a multicopy plasmid. As expected of a site-specific recombination event, the genetic exchange also occurred in a context deficient for homologous recombination. The DNA sequence of the attachment sites resulting from excision were hybrid between the sequences of the direct repeats. Unexpectedly, different hybrid attachment sites appeared which resulted from recombination in four segments of identity between the direct repeats. Genes encoding the trans-acting proteins responsible for the site-specific recombination were shown to be absent in the microcin H47 system. Therefore, they should be provided by the remaining genetic context, not only in the H47 strain but also in E. coli K12 cells, where both excision and integration occurred. Moreover, a survey of the attachment sites in data banks revealed that they are widely spread among E. coli strains. It is concluded that the microcin system is a small island -H47 genomic island- that would employ a parasitic strategy for its mobility.  相似文献

Species delimitation is a permanent issue in systematics. The increasing recognition of geographically isolated populations as independent lineages allowed by new methods of analysis has inflated the species-populations dilemma, which involves deciding whether to consider separate lineages as different species or structured genetic populations. This is commonly observed between fishes of adjacent river basins, with some lineages being considered allopatric sister species and others considered isolated populations or variants of the same species. Pseudocorynopoma doriae is a characid diagnosed from its single congener by the number of anal-fin rays and sexually dimorphic characters of males, including distinct fin colouration. The authors found variation in the colour pattern between isolated populations previously identified as P. doriae but no variation in scale or fin-ray counts. They analysed molecular evidence at the population level and morphological differences related to life history (e.g., colour dimorphism related to inseminating behaviour). The results provide compelling evidence for the recognition of a new species of Pseudocorynopoma despite the lack of discrete differences in meristic data. The recognition of the new species is consistent with biogeographical evidence for the long-term isolation of the respective river drainages and with differences between the ichthyofaunal communities of these rivers.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA sequences from 16S rRNA and ATPase8 genes were used to investigate phylogeographic patterns of the land snail Albinaria (Gastropoda: Clausiliidae) in the Aegean archipelago. Forty-two populations of Albinaria were analyzed, mainly A. turrita, A. caerulea and A. brevicollis, collected from 22 Aegean islands and certain surrounding regions. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses on 16S rRNA and combined datasets produced trees that share significant similarity and reveal a phylogeny with distinct branches which are in general, but not full, agreement with current taxonomy. The Aegean taxa are not monophyletic as a whole, since A. turrita does not cluster with A. caerulea and A. brevicollis. The latter form a distinct monophyletic cluster, within which two groups are evident. These groups do not readily correspond to currently accepted morphospecies; one contains the populations that inhabit the central part of the archipelago plus some eastern islands, while the other contains populations whose geographic distribution is restricted to the southeastern part of the archipelago. The divergence between these two groups is attributed to vicariance events that primarily shape contemporary distributions. Although dispersal may also be present, certain small- and large-scale vicariance events can be traced; alternative phylogeographic hypotheses are discussed in view of the historical biogeography of the region.  相似文献
