A growing body of evidence shows within-population variation in natal dispersal, but the effects of such variation on social relationships and the kin composition of groups remain poorly understood. We investigate the link between dispersal, the kin composition of groups, and proximity patterns in a population of black-and-white colobus (Colobus vellerosus) that shows variation in female dispersal. From 2006 to 2011, we collected behavioral data, demographic data, and fecal samples of 77 males and 92 females residing in eight groups at Boabeng-Fiema, Ghana. A combination of demographic data and a genetic network analysis showed that although philopatry was female-biased, only about half of the females resided in their natal groups. Only one group contained female-female dyads with higher average relatedness than randomly drawn animals of both sexes from the same group. Despite between-group variation in female dispersal and kin composition, female-female dyads in most of the study groups had higher proximity scores than randomly drawn dyads from the same group. We conclude that groups fall along a continuum from female dispersed, not kin-based, and not bonded to female philopatric, kin-based, and bonded. We found only partial support for the predicted link between dispersal, kin composition, and social relationships. In contrast to most mammals where the kin composition of groups is a good predictor of the quality of female-female relationships, this study provides further support for the notion that kinship is not necessary for the development and maintenance of social bonds in some gregarious species.  相似文献

Effect of Group Size on Activity Budgets of Colobus vellerosus in Ghana   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Group size influences foraging efficiency in several primates. We examined the activity budgets of 3 groups of Geoffroy's pied colobus (Colobus vellerosus) at the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary in Ghana to determine whether larger group size induces scramble competition. We studied 2 groups (B1; N = 7-8 and WW; N = 31-33) occupying slightly overlapping home ranges from August to November 2000. We observed the third group, B2 (N = 15-16), comprising B1 and 7 male invaders in the same home range as B1 from August to November 2001. By comparing groups belonging to the same population and occupying sligthly overlapping or similar home ranges, we were able to control, to a certain extent, for differences in food distribution. We recorded a total of 3353 scans, yielding 14,886 activity records, over 73 days. As with other black-and-white colobus, resting was their most common activity (59%). Intergroup comparisons suggest that time spent feeding, resting and moving did not vary in relation to group size. However, intragroup comparisons between the sexes show that females in the large group spent more time feeding than males did, whereas this was not the case in the small group, which suggests that scramble competition may be occurring among female Colobus vellerosus at BFMS. It is also possible that this may be due to greater nutritional requirements because of a higher proportion of infants in the large group. In fact, the proportion is quite similar between the two groups, lending support to the idea that females in the two groups had comparable nutritional demands due to lactation. This suggests that increased feeding in females in the large group was partly an effect of scramble competition. Group size and group composition also influenced the frequency of social behavior. There was more grooming in the large group, and it was performed mostly by females. The distribution of activities throughout the day was similar to the pattern reported for other black-and-white colobus.  相似文献

The contribution of potassium channels [ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) and high-conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK(Ca)) channels] in the resistance of aortic rings of term pregnant rats to phenylephrine (Phe), arginine vasopressin (AVP), and KCl was investigated. Concentration-response curves to tetraethylammonium (TEA), a nonselective K(+) channel inhibitor, were obtained in the absence or presence of KCl. TEA induced by itself concentration-dependent responses only in aortic rings of nonpregnant rats. These responses to TEA could be modulated in both groups of rings by preincubation with different concentrations of KCl. Concentration-response curves to Phe, AVP, and KCl were obtained in the absence or presence of cromakalim or NS-1619 (K(ATP) and BK(Ca) openers, respectively) and glibenclamide or iberiotoxin (K(ATP) and BK(Ca) inhibitors, respectively). Cromakalim significantly inhibited the responses to the three agonists in a concentration-dependent manner in both groups of rats. Alternatively, in the pregnant group of rats, glibenclamide increased the sensitivity to all three agonists. NS-1619 also inhibited the response to all agonists. With AVP and KCl, its effect was greater in aortic rings of pregnant than nonpregnant rats. Finally, iberiotoxin increased the sensitivity to all three agents. This effect was more important in aortic rings of nonpregnant rats and was accompanied by an increase of the maximal response to Phe and AVP. These results suggest that potassium channels are implicated in the control of basal membrane potential and in the blunted responses to these agents during pregnancy.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to characterize the contractile effects of vanadate on thoracic aorta rings from virgin and term-pregnant rats. Vanadate caused concentration-dependent contraction in rat aortic rings with an EC50 (concentration producing 50% maximum response) of 0.10 mM. Contractions in response to vanadate were equivalent to the ones measured with 1 M phenylephrine. The effects of vanadate were not affected by indomethacin (up to 10 M), an inhibitor of prostanoid cyclooxygenase, but were blocked in a concentration-dependent manner by staurosporine (0.1–1.0 M), an inhibitor of protein kinase C. Vanadate exhibited a significant decrease of contractile responses in aorta of pregnant as compared to virgin rats. When aortic rings were bathed in presence of different concentrations of vanadate, the concentration-response curve to phenylephrine was shifted to the left, but maximum response was not affected. The potentiation of the contractions to phenylephrine by vanadate was significantly more prominent in aorta of virgin than of pregnant rats. These results suggest that the contractile effect of vanadate on rat aorta is independent of endogenous prostanoids and may be mediated by protein kinase C-dependent pathway. These results also show that the contractile response to vanadate on the rat aorta is impaired during pregnancy.  相似文献

We investigated the occurrence of scramble competition among Colobus vellerosus at Boabeng-Fiema, Ghana. If scramble competition had an impact on feeding efficiency among females, we expected a positive relationship between group size and the proportion of time spent feeding, day journey length, or home range size assuming resource availability is similar among the groups compared. We collected focal data on the feeding behavior of adult females and males over 11 mo (September 2000–August 2001) on 2 study groups: WW (n = 31–33 individuals) and B (n = 8–16 individuals). We also collected ranging data on group movements at half-hour intervals. The large group (WW1) had a significantly longer day journey length than the small group (B1), and females in the large group spent a significantly greater proportion of time feeding in the wet season, a period of low food availability, which suggests it may be a bottleneck period when food resources are scarce and Colobus vellerosus is close to being energy limited. The proximity data suggested females may be able to reduce or adjust for competition by having fewer neighbors when they feed and by spreading out when in a larger group. However, we found no relationship between home range size and group size or that females spent a greater proportion of time feeding than adult males did. Our results highlight the need to factor in differences in food availability when investigating scramble competition. Though equivocal, our results suggest scramble competition occurs among Colobus vellerosus, leading us to suggest there was a match with the potential competitive regime, i.e., food distribution.  相似文献

The cerebral metabolic rate of glucose was measured during nighttime sleep in 36 normal volunteers using positron emission tomography and fluorine-18-labeled 2-deoxyglucose (FDG). In comparison to waking controls, subjects given FDG during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep (primarily stages 2 and 3) showed about a 23% reduction in metabolic rate across the entire brain. This decrease was greater for the frontal than temporal or occipital lobes, and greater for basal ganglia and thalamus than cortex. Subjects in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep tended to have higher cortical metabolic rates than waking subjects. The cingulate gyrus was the only cortical structure to show a significant increase in glucose metabolic rate in REM sleep in comparison to waking. The basal ganglia were relatively more active on the right in REM sleep and symmetrical in NREM sleep.  相似文献
