We have reconstructed partial genealogies in a sample of 44 SW Amazonian Rondonian Surui, in which 45 dinucleotide short tandem repeat polymorphisms had previously been typed. The genotypes of 488 pairs of individuals having an age difference of 13 or greater were compared, and parentage was excluded if a pair failed to share an allele at more than one locus. In order to test the power of this method, we computed the expected distribution of the number of exclusionary loci for such pairs of unrelated individuals, as well as that for individuals with different degrees of relatedness, and compared it to the observed distribution. We estimated that the pairs compared contained ∼20% of individual pairs with a first-cousin relation or closer. A total of 25 pairs were identified as possible parent-child. In three instances, we could identify two or more children having a common parent; we computed a relatedness coefficient in order to establish whether the children were full or half sibs. The genealogies inferred show that instances of polygyny and polyandry (or, alternatively, serial mating), in addition to apparent monogamy, can be found among the Surui. The Surui sample can be used as a model for paleoanthropological populations, in which the determination of relatedness can provide further insights into the social structure of past populations. We estimate that, depending on the history of the populations and the degree of inbreeding, 10–20 highly informative nuclear loci should be typed in order to infer genealogies with acceptable confidence. In species with time-limited opportunities for insemination, precopulatory mate-guarding is expected to coevolve with the duration of female reproductive cycles. Despite this adaptation to female characteristics, it may also be advantageous for males to adjust the duration of guarding with respect to sex ratio because the benefits of guarding are dependent on the availability of females. If female fitness is reduced because of guarding, male guarding behavior leads to intersexual conflict. We studied these aspects of male mate-guarding behavior in two closely related, thermal-spring isopods (Thermosphaeroma). First, guarding duration showed species specificity which was related to the duration of reproductive cycle; cycle length for females and duration of guarding by males in T. milleri were twice as long as in T. thermophilum. Second, males in both species adjusted their guarding duration with sex ratio, guarding longer when a competing male was present. Third, in T. thermophilum, ovarian development began immediately after the birth of the previous brood and continued through guarding, sexual molt and post-molt periods until oviposition, whereas in T. milleri, ovarian development was largely postponed until the post-molt period. Because guarding during ovary provisioning periods may be costly for females, we tested the existence of intersexual conflict over guarding duration in T. thermophilum. We compared the duration of guarding of control pairs with those of pairs in which either male guarding ability or female ability to resist guarding was reduced experimentally. Guarding durations for manipulated and control males were equal, but manipulated females were guarded longer, suggesting that conflict exists and that females can effectively shorten guarding duration by their behavior. Moreover, we suggest that selection in the context of intersexual conflict may play an important role in the evolution of delayed oviposition and sperm-storage organs in mate-guarding crustaceans.  相似文献

A key issue in evolutionary biology is whether selection acting at levels higher than the individual can cause evolutionary change. If it can, then conceptual and empirical studies must consider how selection operates at multiple levels of biological organization. Here, we test the hypothesis that estimates of broad‐sense community heritability, HC2, can be used to predict the evolutionary response by community‐level phenotypes when community‐level selection is imposed. Using an approach informed by classic quantitative genetics, we made three predictions. First, when we imposed community‐level selection, we expected a significant change in the average phenotype of arthropod communities associated with individual tree genotypes [we imposed selection by favoring high and low NMDS (nonmetric multidimensional scaling) scores that reflected differences in arthropod species richness, abundance and composition]. Second, we expected HC2 to predict the magnitude of the community‐level response. Third, we expected no significant change in average NMDS scores with community‐level selection imposed at random. We tested these hypotheses using three years of common garden data for 102 species comprising the arthropod communities, associated with nine clonally replicated Populus angustifolia genotypes. Each of our predictions were met. We conclude that estimates of HC2 account for the resemblance among communities sharing common ancestry, the persistence of community composition over time, and the outcome of selection when it occurs at the community level. Our results provide a means for exploring how this process leads to large‐scale community evolutionary change, and they identify the circumstances in which selection may routinely act at the community level.  相似文献

Organ-specific antibodies were looked for in 26 patients with lichen sclerosus. Ten of the 25 female patients (40%) had organ-specific antibodies to thyroid cytoplasm and 11 (44%) had organ-specific antibodies to gastric parietal cells. Both values were significantly greater than those obtained in age-matched controls. None of the sera from patients with lichen sclerosus contained antibodies to steroid-producing tissues. No organ-specific antibodies were found in the one male patient.The findings suggest that lichen sclerosus may be related to an autoimmune process.  相似文献

Forty one patients whose psoriasis cleared with dithranol were given prophylatic photochemotherapy with psoralens and ultraviolet A once a week. With life table analysis the chance of remaining in remission for 16 months was shown to be 42% for these patients, compared with 13% for a group of patients who were not given prophylactic photochemotherapy.  相似文献
