Effects of polygyny and consanguinity on high fertility in the rural Arab population in South Jordan
Based on the authors' interview survey for 608 randomly selected women of the rural Arab population in the South Ghor district of Jordan, this paper examined the effects of polygyny and consanguinity on high fertility, which was recognized as natural fertility. The prevalence of polygynous and consanguineous marriages was 28.0% and 58.1%, respectively, largely reflecting the population's traditional marriage customs. The findings highlighted a significantly higher total marital fertility rate (TMFR) in the monogamous wives (10.5) than in the senior polygynous (8.1) and junior polygynous wives (8.6); the TMFR did not significantly differ among the wives of non-consanguineous, first-cousin and second-cousin marriages. The formation of polygynous marriage was decided by the husband, mostly as a result of his senior wife's infecundity or sub-fecundity, and the age of the husband at marriage to his junior polygynous wife was high in many cases, leading to a decline in this wife's fecundity. 相似文献

The phytochemical flavonoid genistein has been shown to act as a potent competitive inhibitor of human adrenocortical 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and cytochrome P450 21-hydroxylase activities in vitro [J. Steroid Biochem. Molec. Biol. 2002; 80: 355-363]. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of large amounts of genistein continuously administered to weanling rats, particularly on steroidogenesis at the pubertal stage in vivo. Serum concentrations of free and total genistein were significantly higher in the 40 mg/kg genistein administration group when compared with the control group. In genistein administered rats, adrenal weight was significantly higher. Furthermore, a clear expansion of cells was observed in hematoxylin and eosin stained tissue at the zona fasciculata and zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex. However in the testis, no differences in weights or histologic changes were observed. Serum corticosterone concentration significantly decreased to 50% of control levels by 40 mg/kg genistein administration and testosterone also tended to decrease with this dose of genistein. On the other hand, although serum follicle stimulating hormone was unchanged, adrenocorticotropic hormone and luteinizing hormone levels increased with genistein administration. These results suggest a significant effect of genistein on steroidogenesis in the adrenal gland and testis of rats, and this effect appeared to be more evident on steroid production in adrenals than in testis in vivo. 相似文献

So far some nuclear receptors for bile acids have been identified. However, no cell surface receptor for bile acids has yet been reported. We found that a novel G protein-coupled receptor, TGR5, is responsive to bile acids as a cell-surface receptor. Bile acids specifically induced receptor internalization, the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase mitogen-activated protein kinase, the increase of guanosine 5'-O-3-thio-triphosphate binding in membrane fractions, and intracellular cAMP production in Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing TGR5. Our quantitative analyses for TGR5 mRNA showed that it was abundantly expressed in monocytes/macrophages in human and rabbit. Treatment with bile acids was found to suppress the functions of rabbit alveolar macrophages including phagocytosis and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cytokine productions. We prepared a monocytic cell line expressing TGR5 by transfecting a TGR5 cDNA into THP-1 cells that did not express TGR5 originally. Treatment with bile acids suppressed the cytokine productions in the THP-1 cells expressing TGR5, whereas it did not influence those in the original THP-1 cells, suggesting that TGR5 is implicated in the suppression of macrophage functions by bile acids. 相似文献

In mammals, taste receptor cells are organized into taste buds on tongue. Taste buds are trophically maintained by taste neurons and under continuous renewal, even in adults. We found that the receptor for Sonic hedgehog (Shh), Patched1 (Ptc), was expressed around taste buds where cells were proliferating, and that Shh was expressed within basal cells of taste buds. The catalase activities in blood and organs of the acatalasemic (C3H/AnLCsbCsb) mouse of the C3H strain are lower than those of the normal (C3H/AnLCsaCsa) mouse. We conducted a study to examine changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), the total gluathione content, and the lipid peroxide level in the brain, which is more sensitive to oxidative stress than other organs, at 3, 6, or 24 hr following X-ray irradiation at doses of 0.25, 0.5, or 5.0 Gy to the acatalasemic and the normal mice. No significant change in the lipid peroxide level in the acatalasemic mouse brain was seen under non-irradiation conditions. However, the acatalasemic mouse brain was more damaged than the normal mouse brain by excessive oxygen stress, such as a high-dose (5.0 Gy) X-ray. On the other hand, we found that, unlike 5.0 Gy X-ray, a relatively low-dose (0.5 Gy) irradiation specifically increased the activities of both catalase and GPX in the acatalasemic mouse brain making the activities closer to those in the normal mouse brain. BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma composed predominantly of epithelioid cells has been referred to as epithelioid angiomyolipoma. As this subtype shows considerable cellular atypia, it may be erroneously diagnosed as malignant epithelioid tumor, such as renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. So far, only one report describing the cytologic findings of epithelioid angiomyolipoma has been documented, and epithelioid angiomyolipoma occurring in the peritoneal cavity has not been reported. CASE: Eleven years after resection of a renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma in a 34-year-old male with tuberous sclerosis, a tumor appeared in the peritoneal cavity and three masses in the liver. The intraoperative smears imprinted from part of the peritoneal mass revealed many large, atypical cells. The well-preserved atypical cells showed abundant, round to polyhedral, granular cytoplasm. Bizarre, giant nuclei with hyperchromasia and huge nucleoli were occasionally seen. Intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions and mitotic figures were occasionally observed. As the epithelioid cells were markedly pleomorphic, we could not rule out hepatocellular carcinoma, cytologically and histologically, in the intraoperative consultation. In permanent sections the tumor was composed predominantly of epithelioid cells showing an alveolar pattern or sheetlike arrangement. Mitotic counts were zero to one per 10 high-power fields. Immunohistochemically, the epithelioid tumor cells were positive for vimentin, alpha-smooth muscle actin and HMB-45, consistent with epithelioid angiomyolipoma. MIB-1-labeling index was 1.6%. CONCLUSION: When one sees atypical epithelioid tumor cells in a tuberous sclerosis patient during an intraoperative consultation, one must consider epithelioid angiomyolipoma. 相似文献
