The structural organization of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of Humulus lupulus, H. japonicus and Cannabis sativa was determined by restriction site mapping. A high degree of DNA sequence similarity was evident in the coding regions of the rDNA repeats of the taxa and supports the placement of Cannabis and Humulus in one family, Cannabaceae. However, the presence of a BstEII site, an additional SacI site, absence of the SpeI site and positional differences of the SspI sites in the 25 S gene distinguished H. japonicus from H. lupulus. Humulus lupulus has an additional EcoRV site in the IGS region. A XhoI site in the 18S region of C. sativa distinguishes it from the two hop species. The diagnostic differences in the IGS of C. sativa include the EcoRI, HindIII and XhoI sites. These sites were not detected in the IGS of the two hop species.  相似文献

Behavioural compatibility between mates is fundamental for maintaining species boundaries and is achieved through appropriate communication between males and females. A breakdown in communication will lead to behavioural divergence and reduced interfertility. In this review, we summarise the current knowledge on male signals and female perception of these signals, integrating the literature from several taxa. We advocate that signaller–perceiver coevolution, which is usually under strong stabilising selection to enable mating, forms the basis of species-specific mate recognition systems. The mechanisms (phylogeny, geography, ecology, biology) shaping signaller–perceiver systems are briefly discussed to demonstrate the factors underpinning the evolution of signaller–perceiver couplings. Since divergence and diversification of communication systems is driven by changes in the mechanical properties of sensory pathways and morphology of sensory organs, we highlight signal modalities (auditory, olfactory, visual, tactile) and their importance in communication, particularly in mate selection. Next, using available examples and generating a stylised model, we suggest how disruption (biological, ecological, stochastic) of signaller–perceiver systems drives behavioural divergence and consequently results in reduced interfertility and speciation. Future studies should adopt an integrative approach, combining multiple parameters (phylogeny, adaptive utility of communication systems, genetics and biomechanical/biochemical properties of signals and perception) to explore how disruption of signaller–perceiver systems results in behavioural divergence and reduced interfertility. Finally, we question the impact that rapid environmental change will have on disruption of communication systems, potentially interfering with signaller–perceiver couplings.  相似文献

The study of social behaviour can give us important insights into the social and mating system of a species or population. We investigated male–female interactions in captive bushveld gerbils, Gerbilliscus leucogaster, to gain insight into the social behaviour and mating structure. We conducted two experiments. In experiment 1, we studied the interactions between two strangers for a week in a three-tank setup, which tested behavioural variation spatially and temporally. Although tolerance between strange males and females increased with time, it remained generally low throughout the experiment. Females appeared to be cautious of males initially, but they later became aggressive towards them. Males showed an increase in submissive behaviour over time. The ‘home’ cage did not appear to be defended by either sex. In experiment 2, we investigated the social interactions of male–female pairs during pregnancy and lactation. Aggression persisted throughout the study and amicable behaviour was low; females were much more aggressive than males. We did not detect changes in social behaviour with the progression of pregnancy and lactation. We suggest that pair bonding is unlikely and that promiscuity is the most probable mating system. Female aggression may be related to mate choice prior to mating and mate exclusion thereafter, while it may be a response to infanticide risk during pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

It is generally recommended that immunoblots using phosphospecific antibodies be performed using bovine serum albumin (BSA) instead of milk. There are two subtypes of glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3), GSK3 α and GSK3 β, with apparent molecular weights of 51 and 49 kDa, respectively. Here we show that immunoblots performed using 5% milk allow the detection of both phosphorylated GSK3 α and phosphorylated GSK3 β, whereas only phosphorylated GSK3 α is visible when immunoblots are performed using 3% BSA.  相似文献

We report on the first phytochemical investigation of a member of the African genus Resnova (Hyacinthoideae: Hyacinthaceae). From the dichloromethane extract of the bulbs of both Resnova humifusa and Eucomis montana (Hyacinthoideae: Hyacinthaceae) a novel 3-benzyl-4-chromanone homoisoflavonoid, 5,6-dimethoxy-7-hydroxy-3-(4′-hydroxybenzyl)-4-chromanone, was isolated. A further 11 known homoisoflavonoids were also identified, the 12 in total presenting a clear biosynthetic sequence. Eight of the 12 compounds found were common to both species.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of soybean chloroplast tRNAsLeu were determined using post-labeling techniques. Comparison of the primary structures of soybean chloroplast tRNAsLeu with their bean, maize and spinach counterparts only show few base differences. Contrary to previously published results (1) a re-examination of bean tRNALeu sequence shows that this tRNA resembles soybean and maize tRNA2Leu in structure.  相似文献

The seasonal fluctuations in the incidence of planktonic organisms and the larval forms of certain crustaceans such as crabs, barnacles and post larvae of prawns in the plankton of the south-west coast of India have been followed for a period of three years from 1963. South-west monsoon period is the least productive period for zooplankton in this area. Brachyuran zoeae, post larvae of prawns and barnacle nauplii occur in the plankton throughout the year with distinct peaks for different groups. The zoeae ofUca annulipes occur in the plankton from September to May with a peak during November–December. The zoeae ofPortunus pelagicus are present in the plankton from September to June and their abundance is in February–March. The post larvae ofMetapenaeus affinis are found in the inshore plankton from November to June with the peak in March. The nauplii ofBalanus amphitrite communis occur in the plankton in all the months of the year, the peak incidence has been during November January. The zoeae ofU. annulipes are found to tolerate better the medium saline conditions. Of the ecological factors, salinity of the ambient water and the availability of planktonic food for the larvae seem to influence the seasonal fluctuations of these crustacean larvae in this locality.  相似文献
