The air mycoflora of six indoor environments in Madras city (India) has been investigated by sampling air with an Andersen
sampler and a Burkard personal sampler. Forty-eight species assignable to 24 genera were recorded by Andersen sampler. Spores
belonging to 14 genera in addition toPenicillium andAspergillus were identified from Burkard trap slides. Species ofAspergillus, Penicillium, Mucor andRhizopus were most frequently isolated in considerable numbers. As a single genusAspergillus ranked first followed byPenicillium at some sites, andCladosporium at some other sites. The predominance ofPenicillium andAspergillus was also confirmed by Burkard trap data. Spores belonging toGanoderma, Nigrospora, Epicoccum, andTetraploa were recorded only by Burkard sampler, thereby suggesting the necessity of using two complimentary spore traps, cultural

Arsenic in groundwater and its health risk assessment in drinking water of Mailsi,Punjab, Pakistan 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The present study was aimed at assessing drinking water quality regarding arsenic (As) and its impact on health from Mailsi (Punjab), Pakistan. Forty-four groundwater samples were collected from two sites, Sargana and Mailsi. Arsenic and other cations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer, whereas the anions were determined either through titration or spectrophotometer. The results revealed that dominant anions were HCO3? and Cl?, Ca+2 was the dominant cation, and overall water chemistry of the area was CaMgHCO3? type. Arsenic concentrations were high, ranging from 11 to 828 µg/L that crossed the World Health Organization permissible limits. Likewise, higher SO4?2 concentrations ranging from 247 to 1053 mg/L were observed. The health risk index was higher in the Sargana site, which employed the differences in terms of higher Average Daily Dose, Hazard Quotient, and Carcinogenic Risk of arsenic, which is unsuitable for drinking purposes. The area seems to be at high risk due to arsenic pollution and wells have never been tested for arsenic concentrations earlier; therefore, necessary measures should be taken to test the wells with respect to arsenic. 相似文献

Gout is an inflammatory joint disorder characterized by hyperuricaemia and precipitation of monosodium urate crystals in the joints. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the anti‐inflammatory effect of trikatu, a herbal compound in monosodium urate crystal‐induced inflammation in rats, an experimental model for acute gouty arthritis. Paw volume and levels/activities of lysosomal enzymes, lipid peroxidation, anti‐oxidant status and histopathological examination of ankle joints were determined in control and monosodium urate crystal‐induced rats. In addition, analgesic (acetic acid‐induced writhing response), anti‐pyretic (yeast‐induced pyrexia) and gastric ulceration effects were tested. The levels of lysosomal enzymes, lipid peroxidation and paw volume were significantly increased, and anti‐oxidant status was found to be reduced in monosodium urate crystal‐induced rats, whereas the biochemical changes were reverted to near normal levels upon trikatu (1000 mg/kg b.wt) administration. The trikatu has also been found to exhibit significant analgesic and anti‐pyretic effects with the absence of gastric damage. In conclusion, the present results clearly indicated that trikatu exert a potent anti‐inflammatory effect against monosodium urate crystal‐induced inflammation in rats in association with analgesic and anti‐pyretic effects in the absence of gastrointestinal damage. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most prevalent cancer in Jammu and Kashmir region of India and has multi-factorial etiology involving dietary habits, genetic factors, and gene environmental interactions. Inactivation of the p16 gene expression by aberrant promoter methylation plays an important role in the progression of esophageal carcinoma. In the present investigation, we have studied the role of p16 promoter methylation in 69 histopathologically confirmed ESCC tissues and compared it with corresponding normal adjacent tissues for DNA methylation in the CpG island in the p16 promoter region by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) and p16 protein expression by immunoblotting. The results showed loss of p16 expression in 67% (46/69) of tumor tissues compared to only 3% in control tissues (2/69). Promoter methylation was observed in 52% (36/69) of tumor tissues and it gradually increased with the increasing severity of histological grades of the cancer (P = 0.0001). Loss of p16 expression with promoter methylation was observed in 26 of 36 cases (72%). Analysis of patients dietary habits revealed a strong association between promoter methylation and high consumption of hot salted tea (P < 0.05) which is a most favourite drink commonly consumed by Kashmiri people. 相似文献

The tyrosinase inhibitory potential of seventeen synthesized oxazolone derivatives has been evaluated and their structure-activity relationships developed in the present work. All the synthesized derivatives, 3-19, demonstrated excellent in vitro tyrosinase inhibitory properties having IC50 values in the range of 1.23+/-0.37-17.73+/-2.69 microM, whereas standard inhibitors l-mimosine and kojic acid have IC50 values 3.68+/-0.02 and 16.67+/-0.52 microM,, respectively. Compounds 4-8 having IC50 values 3.11+/-0.95, 3.51+/-0.25, 3.23+/-0.66, 1.23 +/- 0.37, and 2.15+/-0.75, respectively, were found to be very active members of the series, even better than both the standard inhibitors. However, compounds 3, 9-11, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 19 were found to be better than kojic acid but not l-mimosine. (2-Methyl-4-[E,2Z)-3-phenyl-2-propenyliden]-1,3-oxazol-5(4H)-one (7) bearing a cinnamyol residue at C-4 of oxazolone moiety and an IC50 = 1.23+/-0.37 microM was found to be the most active one among all tested compounds. These studies reveal that the substitution of functional group (s) at C-4 and C-2 positions plays a vital role in the activity of this series of compounds. The influence of gamma radiation on the mating behaviour of the red date palm weevil (RDPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), and the efficacy of sterile insect technique (SIT) under different levels of relative humidity (RH) were studied. No adverse effects of gamma radiation were observed on the mating behaviour parameters of the RDPW, such as mate recognition time, mating duration, mating frequency within a 30‐min period and duration between consecutive matings. However, the weevils were sexually stimulated during aggregation. RH significantly affected egg laying as well as egg hatching. Significantly lower egg laying and hatching were recorded at 25% RH than at higher humidity levels, suggesting that low humidity conditions are better for successful SIT manipulations in the field. Lifespan of irradiated RDPW males was significantly shorter than that of un‐irradiated controls, irrespective of RH level. 相似文献
