A guanine-type retinal tapetum was recorded in the eyes of a carangid fish Kaiwarinus equula (= Carangoides equula), spectrophotometric evidence of such being presented. The total amount of guanine in one eye was about 6.5 mg, the guanine density being ca. 1.3 mg cm(-2) over the retinal surface area. To examine the guanine distribution within the retina, the latter was divided into 21 regions. An area of high guanine density (more than 2.0 mg cm(-2)) was observed in the dorsal fundus of the retina, suggesting that the most sensitive vision was checked downward. Using whole-mount retinal preparations, the distribution of Nissl-stained cells within the retinal ganglion cell layer was examined. The greatest cell density area (area centralis) was observed only in the temporal retina. The visual acuity of the area centralis was 4.3 cycles deg(-1), suggesting that high resolution and binocular vision were directed frontally in this species. The eyes of a related carangid (Pseudocaranx dentex), lacking a tapetum, were also examined for comparison. The possible ecological advantage resulting from the tapetum is discussed in terms of visual threshold.  相似文献

The slopes of Mt. Koma in Japan are undergoing primary succession as a result of a 1929 eruption. Understory vegetation below a non-native invasive tree species, Larix kaempferi, a native tree, Betula ermanii, and in the open were compared to determine if the non-native tree species was influencing species composition. Larix canopies are significantly larger than Betula canopies. Vegetation under Larix canopies had significantly greater richness and diversity than vegetation in the open, vegetation under Betula was intermediate but was significantly greater than the open in diversity. Vegetation cover was highest under Betula and significantly lower in the open. Larix canopy size was positively correlated with size and number of Salix reinii shrubs. Betula canopy size was positively correlated with size but not with number of Salix reinii shrubs. Species assemblages in the three sites are slightly different as shown by DCA. Due to the limited species pool on Mt. Koma the greatest possible extent of differences between the three microsites is not large. At this point Larix certainly appears to be accelerating succession for the non-tree species. If Larix persists on the slopes then succession would be permanently deflected towards a Larix forest. This would be a case of succession being deflected towards dominance by the introduced species. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Non-water soluble chito-oligosaccharides (COSs) (molecular weights: 8, 800; 14, 200; 18, 200; and 33, 000) were investigated for complement activation by the single radial immuno-diffusion method. C3 activation was increased in a chain length-dependent manner. On regression analysis, there was significant correlation (P<0.01) between the number of NH2 group of COSs and the extent of C3 activation after 20 min of incubation. The binding of C3b to chitosan (82% deacetylated chitin) was also investigated by an immunofluorescence method, and binding of C3b to chitosan particles was clearly observed. From these results, number of amino groups, and trapping of C3b are important evidence of complement activation via alternative pathway by chitosan and non-water soluble COSs.  相似文献

To examine whether the calcium accumulation in the arteries is related to the way of walk or not, the calcium contents were determined in various arteries of Japanese monkeys of quadrupedal walk by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Japanese monkeys consisted of five males and four females, ranging in age from 2 to 29 yr. Age-related changes of the calcium content were examined in various monkey arteries. Significant relationships between age and calcium content were found in the arteries, such as the axillary, brachial, radial, subclavian, common carotid, common iliac, and femoral arteries, but not statistically in the thoracic and abdominal aortas, ulnar, external iliac, internal iliac, popliteal, and tibial arteries. The average contents of calcium were compared between the two groups of the monkeys below 14 yr and over 24 yr of age. Below 14 yr, the calcium content was a little higher in the arteries, such as the common, external and internal iliac, and femoral arteries than that of the other ones. Over 24 yr, the calcium content increased remarkably in the arteries, such as the thoracic aorta, common, internal and external iliac, common carotid, and subclavian arteries. The calcium contents of the thoracic aorta, common, internal and external iliac, common carotid, and subclavian arteries increased by more than two times over 24 yr compared with those below 14 yr. In a comparison between the calcium contents of the arteries in the anatomically corresponding regions of the upper and lower limbs, no statistically significant differences were found in the subjects over 24 yr as well as the subjects 2–29 yr of age. The calcium accumulation in the arteries of monkeys with aging was different from those in the arteries of humans, because in the case of human, a very high accumulation of calcium occurred in the arteries of the lower limb with aging in comparison with those in the upper limbs. Therefore, it is likely that different ways of walk or different species are partly affected in the calcium accumulation in the arteries with aging.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol)–chitosan hybrids of various molecular weights having different degree of substitution were synthesized, by reductive N-alkylation of chitosan with poly(ethylene glycol) aldehyde, to study their bioactivities. The influence of these chitosan derivatives on the reactive oxygen species generation from canine polymorphonuclear leukocyte cells was investigated in vitro by chemiluminescence response. Reactive oxygen species generation by the influence of poly(ethylene glycol)–chitosan hybrids was decreased with the increase of degree of substitution. The reduction of interaction of poly(ethylene glycol)–chitosan hybrids with polymorphonuclear leukocyte cells might be caused by the decrease of amino group in chitosan main chain and increase of the steric hindrance by poly(ethylene glycol) chain. The influence of the poly(ethylene glycol)–chitosan hybrids on complement component C3 activation was investigated by single radial immunodiffusion method. Influence on complement component C3 activation by poly(ethylene glycol)–chitosan hybrids was almost same as chitosan.  相似文献

Sulfated derivatives of a glycosaminoglycan containing l-glutamic acid produced by a marine Pseudomonas species, No. 42 strain, were prepared by the method of dicyclohexyl-carbodiimide-mediated reaction. Both low and high degrees of sulfation of the polysaccharides (products A1 and A2, respectively) were investigated for their antiviral activities against influenza virus type A (FluV-A) and B (FluV-B) in MDCK cells. Both preparations showed antiviral activity against FluV-A at the 50% antiviral effective concentration of 17.3 and 5.2 μg/ml, respectively, whereas they had no antiviral activity against FluV-B. No cytotoxicity of either product was noted against MDCK cells at the 50% cytotoxic concentration of 100 μg/ml. Received April 4, 1998; accepted July 24, 1998.  相似文献

A marine Pseudomonas species WAK-1 strain simultaneously produces extracellular glycosaminoglycan and sulfated polysaccharide. Among the antiviral activities tested for these polysaccharides, the latter showed anti-HSV-1 activity in RPMI 8226 cells (50% effective concentration is 1.4 μg/ml). Oversulfated derivatives of these polysaccharides prepared by dicyclohexylcarbodiimide-mediated reaction for both polysaccharides showed antiviral activities against influenza virus type A (for glycosaminoglycan, 50% effective concentration is 11.0 μg/ml; for another, 2.9 μg/ml). Glycosaminoglycan, sulfated polysaccharide, and their chemically synthesized oversulfated derivatives did not show antiviral activities against influenza virus type B and human immunodeficiency virus type 1. No cytotoxicity of these products was noted against host cells at the 50% cytotoxic concentration of 100 μg/ml, except that naturally occurring sulfated polysaccharide had 50% cytotoxicity against MT-4 cells at 8–21 μg/ml.
