A radio-telemetric study of the endangered Sokoke Scops Owl Otus ireneae was conducted between July and December 1993. The aims were to determine the species' home range and movement patterns with respect to time and moon phases. Information gathered would then be used to formulate a rational conservation plan to ensure their survival. Six adult owls (from three adjacent pairs) were monitored during the study period. Pairs held exclusive home ranges with little (2.6%) or no overlap with their neighbours. Mean home range size (MCP) of individual owls was 8.8 ha while mean home range size of each pair was 11.0 ha. Peak owl activity took place immediately after dusk and prior to dawn. Periods of lulls occurred between 23h00 and 03h00. Movement per unit time was negatively correlated with distance from roost. The owls tended to forage further from their roosts on nights with decreased illumination from the moon. Maximum owl distances from roosts were attained between 00h00 and 02h00. 相似文献

Prostate cancer (PCa) is considered the most prevalent malignancy and the second major cause of cancer-related death in males from Western countries. PCa exhibits variable clinical pictures, ranging from dormant to highly metastatic cancer. PCa suffers from poor prognosis and diagnosis markers, and novel biomarkers are required to define disease stages and to design appropriate therapeutic approach by considering the possible genomic and epigenomic differences. Vaccines against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been highly efficient in protecting against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the emergence of viral variants that are more transmissible and, in some cases, escape from neutralizing antibody responses has raised concerns. Here, we evaluated recombinant protein spike antigens derived from wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and from variants B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1 for their immunogenicity and protective effect in vivo against challenge with wild-type SARS-CoV-2 in the mouse model. All proteins induced high neutralizing antibodies against the respective viruses but also induced high cross-neutralizing antibody responses. The decline in neutralizing titers between variants was moderate, with B.1.1.7-vaccinated animals having a maximum fold reduction of 4.8 against B.1.351 virus. P.1 induced the most cross-reactive antibody responses but was also the least immunogenic in terms of homologous neutralization titers. However, all antigens protected from challenge with wild-type SARS-CoV-2 in a mouse model.This study explores the immune response induced by wild type and variant SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins, and the protection that these immune responses provide against challenge with wild type virus in the mouse model. 相似文献

The minority culture of mobility of France's upwardly mobile descendants of North African immigrants

This article examines the challenges associated with the experience of upward educational mobility among descendants of North African immigrants in France. Drawing on in-depth, open-ended interviews with students and graduates of the prestigious grandes écoles, it sheds light on three specific ways in which class-based and ethno-racial inequalities intersect to shape the mobility costs that our respondents outline: (1) feelings of isolation resulting from being one of the only bursar recipients and ethno-racial minorities of their schools; (2) perceived conflation of their minority background with counter-elite dispositions; and (3) difficulties of adjusting to a student life reflecting the cultural styles of the predominantly white, upper-middle-class group. The article suggests that our respondents deploy a minority culture of mobility rooted in class and ethno-racial processes to overcome these challenges. It finally discusses implications for future research, stressing the need to examine the intersecting effect of multiple social categories in informing complex mobility experiences. 相似文献

A new immortal Sertoli cell line from pubertal rat testis was established and characterized. We have generated the clonal line SCIT-C8 expressing established markers for Sertoli cells (SC) like transferrin, clusterin and steel factor/stem cell factor (SCF). Additionally, the immortalized cells express afadin, a protein which is a member of tight and adherens junctions, therefore the cells may be useful for studies of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in vitro. In contrast to primary SC, the immortalized cells lost expression of androgen receptor and responsiveness to androgens and follicle-stimulating hormone. Surprisingly, we found mRNA expression and protein secretion of the mesenchymal markers, fibronectin and entactin-1, which we also observed for the immortalized SC lines, ASC-17D and 93RS2. In comparison to primary SC, the immortalized cells demonstrated enhanced adhesion in vitro. This correlated with the expression of entactin-1 because adhesion was strongly reduced by antibody perturbation experiments. Additionally, we found the alternatively spliced and primarily muscle cell-specific long variant of TGF-beta2 not only in peritubular cells (PC), but also in the primary and immortalized SC. Furthermore, all immortalized cell lines secreted higher amounts of TGF-beta2 than primary SC. In conclusion, the immortalized SC lines from different developmental stages showed a similar pattern of epithelial and mesenchymal markers. 相似文献

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphism may play an important role in the pathophysiology of obesity and diabetes accompanied by obesity due to its influence on plasma homocysteine levels. There are significant and sometimes very strong relationship between levels of homocysteine and several multi-system diseases including CHD and CVA. To examine the association between MTHFR gene C677T polymorphism in diabetes and obesity with serum homocysteine levels. A total of 682 subjects were recruited in four groups (Normal, obese, diabetic and obese and diabetics). MTHFR gene C677T polymorphism was detected using PCR-RFLP technique. Serum homocysteine levels were measured using HPLC. There was a significant increase in the mean serum homocysteine levels in subjects carrying TT genotype (34.6 ± 26.5) compared to subjects carrying CC (15.1 ± 8) or CT genotype (16.4 ± 7.8) (P < 0.000). We found no significant differences for MTHFR allele and genotype frequencies between different groups. Our data have confirmed the association between serum homocysteine levels and MTHFR C677T genotype reported in other populations. 相似文献

Litsea glutinosa (Lour.), one of the most dwindling forest species in central India, is represented by highly fragmented populations that have been drastically reduced for the last 40 years, promulgating government ban on its extraction. For the first time with the help of ISSR markers, we investigated genetic variation and population structure of L. glutinosa in central Indian states. A total of 84 genotypes from 10 populations covering the entire potential pockets of the species in central India were collected. The percentage of polymorphic loci ranged from 44.79% (Rewa) to 94.79% (Marvahi) with a mean value of 70.10%. The sampled populations harbored high level of genetic diversity (mean h?=?0.294 and I?=?0.424) that was partitioned more within populations (73%) than between populations (27%). Bayesian structure analysis revealed the existence of four admixed genetic pools in L. glutinosa. The unsustainable extraction rather than genetic factor seems to be responsible for population fragmentation and dwindling status of this species. The dioecious nature of the species advocates an in-situ conservation to be the most suited approach for which Chhindwara, Jagdalpur, Balaghat and Jabalpur populations are appropriate. 相似文献
