Drugs targeting the stem-loop IIB of Rev responsible element (RRE) of HIV-1 mRNA are potential therapeutic agents for HIV-1 infection. The stem loop is characterized by an internal loop consist of consecutive G-G and G-A mismatches, which is the single binding site for Rev protein for nuclear export of viral mRNA. We report here that ligands binding to G-G and G-A mismatches in duplex DNA also bind to the internal loop in competition with Rev peptide and lead to the dissociation of pre-formed Rev-RRE complex in a model system. 相似文献

Like many other gobies, male Isaza (Gymnogobius isaza) which are endemic to Lake Biwa, Japan, exclusively care for broods in nests. This goby may have an optimal range of brood
size (i.e., an average clutch size of about 2000–3000 eggs) within which they may produce larger numbers of hatching young
because much larger broods may be destroyed by fungal infection before hatching. This optimal brood size hypothesis (Takahashi
et al. in J Ethol 22:153–159, 2004) predicts that (1) after spawning, both males and females will refuse additional spawning by other gravid females (second
females) to keep brood sizes within optimal ranges, (2) larger fish will repel second females more successfully than will
smaller fish, and thus, (3) both sexes prefer larger mates. To examine these predictions, we first observed Isaza’s aggressive
behaviors in aquaria and investigated whether fish attacked and repelled second females that were introduced after spawning,
and, if so, what were the sizes of fish that did so. Large fish, regardless of sex, aggressively prevented second females
from entering the nest, but second females larger than the pairs displaced the pair females forcibly and spawned eggs into
their clutches. Mate choice experiments showed that males preferred large females. Although females’ choice of large mates
was not confirmed, many results may largely coincide with the predictions of the optimal brood size hypothesis. Thus, Isaza
males’ choice of large mates will be advantageous for defending against brood parasitism by conspecific females and for achieving

Background
The western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis [Pergande]) is one of the most important insect herbivores of cultivated plants. However, no pesticide provides complete control of this species, and insecticide resistance has emerged around the world. We previously reported the important role of jasmonate (JA) in the plant's immediate response to thrips feeding by using an Arabidopsis leaf disc system. In this study, as the first step toward practical use of JA in thrips control, we analyzed the effect of JA-regulated Arabidopsis defense at the whole plant level on thrips behavior and life cycle at the population level over an extended period. A marine araphid pennate diatom Plagiostriata goreensis is described from the sand grains of Goree Island, Dakar, Republic of Senegal, based on observations of fine structure of its frustule. The most striking feature of the species is its striation, which is angled at approximately 60° across the robust sternum. The other defining features of the species are its one highly reduced rimoportula and apical pores located at both ends of the valve margin. In the 18S rDNA phylogeny, the species appears as a member of a ‘small‐celled clade’ of araphid pennate diatoms that consist of Nanofrustulum, Opephora and Staurosira. The results of the phylogenetic analyses suggest that the distinct characters of the diatom; namely, oblique striae and apical pores, may have been acquired independently. However, it remains unclear whether the rimoportula of P. goreensis is a reduced state or P. goreensis acquired its morphologically curious rimoportula independently after the loss of an ancient rimoportula at the root of the small‐celled clade. 相似文献

Diploneis species have perhaps the most complex valve structure among pennate diatoms. The development of this structure was studied in Diploneis smithii and begins with the formation of a primary band, which then develops secondary arms at both poles and the center, as in the classic Chiappino–Volcani model of raphid diatom ontogeny. Spine‐like projections grow out from the primary band and secondary arms to establish the transapical ribs (virgae) of the mature valve and themselves develop spines, which are spaced first oppositely and then alternately and fuse with each other to delimit the stria pores. Subsequently, new pattern and structures develop both externally (formation of bifurcating projections that fuse to delimit the outer, sieve‐like layer of the valve) and internally (growth and fusion of flanges from the first‐formed ribs to create the longitudinal canals and deposition of a hymenate strip over the internal face of each stria). Comparisons are made with morphogenesis in other diatoms. Diploneis smithii ontogeny suggests how very slight developmental changes might have created the very variable external morphology of Diploneis species. It also indicates that the longitudinal canals of Diploneis and Fallacia have different origins, since the porous external wall is not formed as a unilaterally attached flap in Diploneis and the canal is internal to the first‐formed rib–stria system in Diploneis, but external to it in Fallacia. 相似文献

Background
Despite the high prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), its risk factors are still a subject of controversy. This is probably due to inadequate distinction between reflux esophagitis (RE) and non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), and is also due to inadequate evaluation of adjacent stomach. Our aim is therefore to define background factors of RE and NERD independently, based on the evaluation of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric atrophy.Methods
We analyzed 10,837 healthy Japanese subjects (6,332 men and 4,505 women, aged 20–87 years) who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. RE was diagnosed as the presence of mucosal break, and NERD was diagnosed as the presence of heartburn and/or acid regurgitation in RE-free subjects. Using GERD-free subjects as control, background factors for RE and NERD were separately analyzed using logistic regression to evaluate standardized coefficients (SC), odds ratio (OR), and p-value.Results
Of the 10,837 study subjects, we diagnosed 733 (6.8%) as RE and 1,722 (15.9%) as NERD. For RE, male gender (SC = 0.557, OR = 1.75), HP non-infection (SC = 0.552, OR = 1.74), higher pepsinogen I/II ratio (SC = 0.496, OR = 1.64), higher BMI (SC = 0.464, OR = 1.60), alcohol drinking (SC = 0.161, OR = 1.17), older age (SC = 0.148, OR = 1.16), and smoking (SC = 0.129, OR = 1.14) are positively correlated factors. For NERD, HP infection (SC = 0.106, OR = 1.11), female gender (SC = 0.099, OR = 1.10), younger age (SC = 0.099, OR = 1.10), higher pepsinogen I/II ratio (SC = 0.099, OR = 1.10), smoking (SC = 0.080, OR = 1.08), higher BMI (SC = 0.078, OR = 1.08), and alcohol drinking (SC = 0.076, OR = 1.08) are positively correlated factors. Prevalence of RE in subjects with chronic HP infection and successful HP eradication denotes significant difference (2.3% and 8.8%; p<0.0001), whereas that of NERD shows no difference (18.2% and 20.8%; p = 0.064).Conclusions
Significantly associated factors of NERD are considerably different from those of RE, indicating that these two disorders are pathophysiologically distinct. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori may have disadvantageous effects on RE but not on NERD. 相似文献30.

Inheritance of microspore embryogenic ability in oilseed rape (Brassica
napus L.) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis) was examined by 4 × 4 diallel crosses using cultivars showing a different response. In both species, embryo yields of most F1 hybrids were similar to, or over, the high responsive parent and some F1s showed intermediate embryo yields between their parents. Diallel analysis showed that both additive and dominant effects
were significant at the 1% level for the genetic control of microspore embryogenic ability in both species. Dominant genes
had positive effects on microspore embryogenesis. In oilseed rape, the additive effects were important, while in Chinese cabbage
the dominant effects were largely contributed. The broad- and narrow-sense heritabilities were 0.972 and 0.811 in oilseed
rape, and 0.959 and 0.659 in Chinese cabbage, respectively. From the results of the segregation of embryo yields in the F2 population of ’Lisandra’×’Kamikita’, it is considered that the microspore embryogenic ability is controlled by two loci with
additive effects in oilseed rape.
