Most ecological research on cane toads (Rhinella marina) has focused on invasive populations in Australia, ignoring other areas where toads have been introduced. We radio-tracked and spool-tracked 40 toads, from four populations on the island of Hawai’i. Toads moved extensively at night (mean 116 m, from spool-tracking) but returned to the same or a nearby retreat-site each day (from radio-tracking, mean distance between successive retreat sites 11 m; 0 m for 70% of records). Males followed straighter paths during nocturnal movements than did females. Because moist sites are scarce on the highly porous lava substrate, Hawai’ian toads depend on anthropogenic disturbance for shelter (e.g. beneath buildings), foraging (e.g. suburban lawns, golf courses) and breeding (artificial ponds). Foraging sites are further concentrated by a scarcity of flying insects (negating artificial lights as prey-attractors). Habitat use of toads shifted with time (at night, toads selected areas with less bare ground, canopy, understory and leaf-litter), and differed between sexes (females foraged in areas of bare ground with dense understory vegetation). Cane toads in Hawai’i thrive in scattered moist patches within a severely arid matrix, despite a scarcity of flying insects, testifying to the species’ ability to exploit anthropogenic disturbance. 相似文献

Recognition of specific molecule signatures of microbes, including pathogens, induces innate immune responses in plants, as well as in animals. Analogously, a nematode pheromone, the ascaroside ascr#18, induces hallmark plant defences including activation of (a) mitogen‐activated protein kinases, (b) salicylic acid‐ and jasmonic acid‐mediated defence signalling pathways and (c) defence gene expression and provides protection to a broad spectrum of pathogens. Ascr#18 is a member of an evolutionarily conserved family of nematode signalling molecules and is the major ascaroside secreted by plant–parasitic nematodes. Here, we report the effects of ascr#18 on resistance in four of the major economically important crops: maize, rice, wheat and soybean to some of their associated pathogens. Treatment with low nanomolar to low micromolar concentrations of ascr#18 provided from partial to strong protection in seven of eight plant–pathogen systems tested with viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycetes and nematodes. Sexual dimorphism is widespread in lizards, with the most consistently dimorphic traits being head size (males have larger heads) and trunk length (the distance between the front and hind legs is greater in females). These dimorphisms have generally been interpreted as follows: (1) large heads in males evolve through male-male rivalry (sexual selection); and (2) larger interlimb lengths in females provide space for more eggs (fecundity selection). In an Australian lizard (the snow skink, Niveoscincus microlepidotus), we found no evidence for ongoing selection on head size. Trunk length, however, was under positive fecundity selection in females and under negative sexual selection in males. Thus, fecundity selection and sexual selection work in concert to drive the evolution of sexual dimorphism in trunk length in snow skinks. 相似文献

Darwinian theory predicts that organisms will display traits that benefit themselves rather than other individuals; exceptions to this rule usually are explicable by kin selection. Our studies on an insular population of venomous snakes in north-eastern China reveal a different situation. Only one species of snake (Gloydius shedaoensis, Viperidae) occurs on the island of Shedao, and displays altruism between size (age) classes. First, small snakes frequently kill prey items larger than they can swallow themselves. This behaviour enhances rates of feeding of larger conspecifics, which scavenge the birds' carcasses. Second, large snakes kill raptorial birds (sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus) that pose little or no threat to themselves. This behaviour reduces predation risk for smaller snakes. These effects are presumably accidental consequences of the high venom toxicity of the pit-vipers, which enable them to kill inedible prey and non-threatening predators at little cost. Nonetheless, this accidental altruism may have significant ecological consequences. For example, these behaviours may contribute to the remarkably high population densities of snakes on Shedao. 相似文献

Human galanin is a 30 amino acid neuropeptide that elicits a range of biological activities by interaction with G protein-coupled receptors. We have generated a model of the human GALR1 galanin receptor subtype (hGALR1) based on the alpha carbon maps of frog rhodopsin and investigated the significance of potential contact residues suggested by the model using site-directed mutagenesis. Mutation of Phe186 within the second extracellular loop to Ala resulted in a 6-fold decrease in affinity for galanin, representing a change in free energy consistent with hydrophobic interaction. Our model suggests interaction between Phe186 of hGALR1 and Ala7 or Leu11 of galanin. Receptor subtype specificity was investigated by replacement of residues in hGALR1 with the corresponding residues in hGALR2 and use of the hGALR2-specific ligands hGalanin(2-30) and [D-Trp2]hGalanin(1-30). The His267Ile mutant receptor exhibited a pharmacological profile corresponding to that of hGALR1, suggesting that His267 is not involved in a receptor-ligand interaction. The mutation Phe115Ala resulted in a decreased binding affinity for hGalanin and for hGALR2-specific analogues, indicating Phe115 to be of structural importance to the ligand binding pocket of hGALR1 but not involved in direct ligand interaction. Analysis of Glu271Trp suggested that Glu271 of hGALR1 interacts with the N-terminus of galanin and that the Trp residue in the corresponding position in hGALR2 is involved in receptor subtype specificity of binding. Our model supports previous reports of Phe282 of hGALR1 interacting with Trp2 of galanin and His264 of hGALR1 interacting with Tyr9 of galanin. 相似文献

Gartersnakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) in southern Manitoba
are subject to intense predation (primarily by crows) duringtheir spring breeding season. The huge numbers of snakes providea unique opportunity to quantify behavioral traits. We simulatedpredator attacks by "pecking" more than 500 free-ranging snakes,to explore the determinants of snake response. Snakes respondedto a human finger in the same way as they did to a more realisticstimulus (a model crow). A snake's response to attack dependedon several factors, which interacted in complex ways. The primaryinfluences on response were body temperature (warmer snakes
tended to flee, whereas colder snakes remained cryptic or flattenedand/or gaped and struck) and sex (males were more likely toflee). Responses also depended on microhabitat (i.e., insidethe winter den versus in adjacent grassland) and on the snake'sprior activity (e.g., courting snakes often ignored our closeapproach). These factors interacted in significant ways; for
example, snakes outside the den were smaller and warmer thanthose inside, male snakes were smaller and warmer than females,and mean body temperatures were higher in larger snakes withineach sex. Thus, a snake's body size and its location affectedits defensive response indirectly (via their influence on bodytemperature). Our results differ from those of previous studiesand suggest that antipredator responses in these animals dependin a flexible and complex way upon biotic and abiotic variables.Interactions among these variables also must be consideredbefore we can identify underlying causal processes. 相似文献
