Synaptic responses of medullary neurons to stimulation of the bulbar locomotor strip with a current of about 20 µA were studied by an extracellular recording method in mesencephalic cerebellectomized cats. The mean latent period of response of 177 neurons was 3.2 msec. Neurons in which synaptic responses appeared were located in both the lateral and the medial parts of the reticular formation, but short-latency responses were recorded predominantly in the lateral part. In response to a single stimulus 32% of neurons generated a discharge of 2–4 spikes. "Respiratory" neurons were not excited by stimulation of the locomotor point. The results indicate that neurons of the locomotor strip may have an excitatory action not only on each other, but also on neurons located medially. The possible mechanisms of the spread of activity to the superior cervical segments of the spinal cord are discussed.Institute for Problems in Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Synaptic responses of single units in the "locomotor strip" of the hindbrain were recorded extracellularly. Short-latency responses appeared in neurons of the rostral part of the strip to stimulation of the "locomotor region" of the mesencephalon. Neurons of the caudal part of the strip responded to microstimulation of its other regions, including rostral. If the distance between the neuron and point of stimulation was under 2–3 mm, short-latency (1.2–1.6 msec) responses could be observed. The thresholds and latent periods of the responses increased when the distance apart increased. Polysynaptic responses with a latent period of 3–4 msec could be potentiated by an increase in the frequency of stimulation up to 30–40 Hz. It is suggested that axons of the "locomotor strip" are oriented in the rostrocaudal direction for a distance of 2–3 mm and give off collaterals which run toward neighboring neurons. The strip may be an integrative center, "intercalated" between the rostral portions of the brain stem and spinal cord.Deceased.Institute for Problems in Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Synaptic responses of single neurons to stimulation of the bulbar "locomotor strip" were recorded extracellularly from superior cervical segments in mesencephalic cats. With a strength of stimulation of about 30 µA these responses usually had a latent period of 2–7 msec and they arose in neurons located at a depth of between 2 and 4 mm from the dorsal surface (Rexed's laminae V–VIII). These neurons could not be excited antidromically by stimulation of the lumbar or lower cervical segments. However, antidromic responses could be evoked by stimulation of a region located 3–5 mm caudally to the site of recording. It is suggested that neurons of segments C2 and C3 excited by stimulation of the locomotor strip are components of a cell column along which activity spreads polysynaptically in the direction of spinal stepping generators.Institute for Problems in Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Social insect societies dominate many terrestrial ecosystems across the planet. Colony members cooperate to capture and use resources to maximize survival and reproduction. Yet, when compared with solitary organisms, we understand relatively little about the factors responsible for differences in the rates of survival, growth and reproduction among colonies. To explain these differences, we present a mathematical model that predicts these three rates for ant colonies based on the body sizes and metabolic rates of colony members. Specifically, the model predicts that smaller colonies tend to use more energy per gram of biomass, live faster and die younger. Model predictions are supported with data from whole colonies for a diversity of species, with much of the variation in colony-level life history explained based on physiological traits of individual ants. The theory and data presented here provide a first step towards a more general theory of colony life history that applies across species and environments.  相似文献

Arthrostoma miyazakiense (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae) is a hookworm species reported from the small intestines of raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Japan. Five Korean raccoon dogs (N. procyonoides koreensis) caught from 2002 to 2005 in Jeollanam-do (Province), a southeastern area of South Korea, contained helminth eggs belonging to 4 genera (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and Capillaria spp.) and cysts of Giardia sp. in their feces. Necropsy findings of 1 raccoon dog revealed a large number of adult hookworms in the duodenum. These hookworms were identified as Arthrostoma miyazakiense based on the 10 articulated plates observed in the buccal capsule and the presence of right-sided prevulval papillae. Eggs of A. miyazakiense were 60-65 x 35-40 micrometer (av. 62.5 x 35 micrometer), and were morphologically indistinguishable from those of Ancylostoma caninum. The eggs were cultured to infective 2nd stage larvae via charcoal culture, and 100 infective larvae were used to experimentally infect each of 3 mixed-bred puppies. All puppies harbored hookworm eggs in their feces on the 12th day after infection. This is the first report thus far concerning A. miyazakiense infections in raccoon dogs in Korea, and the first such report outside of Japan.  相似文献

Acarapis mites, including Acarapis woodi, Acarapis externus, and Acarapis dorsalis, are parasites of bees which can cause severe damage to the bee industry by destroying colonies and decreasing honey production. All 3 species are prevalent throughout many countries including UK, USA, Iran, Turkey, China, and Japan. Based on previous reports of Acarapis mites occurring in northeast Asia, including China and Japan, we investigated a survey of Acarapis mite infestations in honey bees in Korean apiaries. A total of 99 colonies of Apis mellifera were sampled from 5 provinces. The head and thorax of 20 bees from each colony were removed for DNA extraction. PCR assays were performed with 3 primer sets, including T, A, and K primers. Results indicated that 42.4% (42/99) of samples were Acarapis-positive by PCR assay which were sequenced to identify species. Each sequence showed 92.6-99.3% homology with reference sequences. Based on the homology, the number of colonies infected with A. dorsalis was 32 which showed the highest infection rate among the 3 species, while the number of colonies infected with A. externus and A. woodi was 9 and 1, respectively. However, none of the Acarapis mites were morphologically detected. This result could be explained that all apiaries in the survey used acaricides against bee mites such as Varroa destructor and Tropilaelaps clareae which also affect against Acarapis mites. Based on this study, it is highly probable that Acarapis mites as well as Varroa and Tropilaelaps could be prevalent in Korean apiaries.  相似文献

Ceramide III was prepared by the cultivation ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae. Ceramide III was partitioned from the cell extracts by solvent extraction and analyzed by Normal Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (NP-HPLC) using Evaporative Light Scattering Detector (ELSD). We experimentally determined the mobile phase composition to separate ceramide III with NP-HPLC. Three binary mobile phases of n-hexane/ethanol,n-hexane/Isoprophyl Alcohol (IPA) andn-hexane/n-butanol and one ternary mobile phase ofn-hexane/IPA/methanol were demonstrated. For the binary mobile phase ofn-hexane/ethanol, the first mobile phase composition, 95/5 (v/v), was step-increased to 72/23 (v/v) at 3 min. In the binary mobile phase, the retention time of ceramide III was 7.87 min, while it was 4.11 min respectively in the ternary system, where the mobile phase composition ofn-hexane/IPA/methanol, 85/7/8 (v/v/v), was step-increased to 75/10/15 (v/v/v) at 3 min. However, in the ternary mobile phase, the more peak area of ceramide III was observed.  相似文献
