Responses of neurons in the medulla and cervical segments of the spinal cord to simultaneous repetitive stimulation (50 pps) of two locomotor points (LP) that exceed the threshold for evoking walking by one to two times were investigated in mesencephalic cats. In most cases a neuron responsed to stimulation of only one LP. Stimulation of a second LP usually enhanced the firing index of that response, if it was low. Or it decreased the firing index if it was high, and it had no effect if the firing index was about 0.1. Some of the neurons responded to stimulation of one LP by increasing the baseline activity, though the pulses were not locked to individual stimuli. The effect of stimulation of the second LP on this increase in activity depended on the size of the increase. Data were also obtained on the convergence of effects on single neurons from the ipsi- and contralateral LPs of the midbrain and medulla. Possible mechanisms of the summation of subthreshold excitation of a pair of LPs during the initiation of locomotion are discussed.Institute of Information Transmission Problems, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. Growth promotion of the edible fungus Pleurotus ostreatus by fluorescent pseudomonads 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bacteria were isolated from the mycelial surface of Pleurotus ostreatus and their role in fruiting body induction (fructification) of the edible mushroom P. ostreatus was investigated. Analysis of the bacterial community that colonized the mycelium showed that the species composition and numbers of culturable bacteria differed according to the developmental stage of P. ostreatus. In particular, the population size of fluorescent pseudomonads increased during fruiting body induction. An experiment showed that inoculation of pure cultures of the mycelium with strains of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. isolated from the mycelial plane of commercially produced mushrooms promoted the formation of primordia and enhanced the development of the basidiome of P. ostreatus. Results of this research strongly suggest that inoculation of the mycelium with specific bacteria may have beneficial applications for mushroom production. 相似文献

Abstract A new Monte Carlo sampling scheme, namely the Modified Valley Restrained Monte Carlo procedure, is used to obtain the global energy minimum conformations for polypeptides, such as Met-enkephalin and Melittin. For each peptide, we found close agreement with previous results from both theoretical and experimental studies. The simple idea for controlling the step size according to the Valley Function, provides useful suggestions in searching the global energy minimum structures, and furthermore helps solve the multiple minima problem. 相似文献

Acharan sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), having the structure →4)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-α-
-glucopyranose(1→4)-2-sulfo-α-
-idopyranosyluronic acid (1→, isolated from the body of the giant African snail Achatina fulica. This GAG represents 3–5% of the dry weight of this snail's soft body tissues. Frozen sections and polyester wax sections of the snail's body were stained by Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff's reagent (PAS) to localize acharan sulfate. Alcian blue staining indicated that GAG was mainly secreted into the outer surface of the body from internal granules. A highly mucous material was collected and treated and the acharan sulfate was recovered by ethanol and cetyl pyridinium chloride precipitation. Crude acharan sulfate was purified by DEAE-Sephacel ion-exchange chromatography. Depolymerization of intact mucus and purified acharan sulfate fractions by heparin lyase II (heparitinase I) from Flavobacterium heparinum produced an unsaturated disaccharide as a major product, establishing the repeating unit of acharan sulfate. These results demonstrate that mucus in the granule and secreted to the outside of the body is composed entirely of acharan sulfate. 相似文献

Saponins are glycosidic compounds present in many edible and inedible plants. They exhibit potent biological activities in mammalian systems, including several beneficial effects such as anti-inflammation and immunomodulation. In this study, we investigated the effects of seven platycodin saponins on the activities of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase II (COX-2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. We found that 2"-O-acetyl polygalacin D (S1), platycodin A (S2), platycodin D (S3), and polygalacin D (S6) inhibited LPS-induced NO production in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, these compounds inhibited the expression of LPS-induced iNOS and COX-2 protein and mRNA without an appreciable cytotoxic effect on RAW 264.7 macrophages, and could suppress induction by LPS of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Treatment with these compounds of RAW 264.7 cells transfected with a reporter construct indicated a reduced level of LPS-induced nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) activity and effectively lowered NF-kappaB binding as measured by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). The suppression of NF-kappaB activation appears to occur through the prevention of inhibitor kappaB (IkappaB) degradation. In vivo, platycodin saponin mixture (PS) and S3 protected mice from the lethal effects of LPS. The 89% lethality induced by LPS/galactosamine was reduced to 60% and 50% when PS and S3, respectively, were administered simultaneously with LPS. These results suggest that the main inhibitory mechanism of the platycodin saponins may be the reduction of iNOS and COX-2 gene expression through blocking of NF-kappaB activation. 相似文献
