Naraoiids are non‐biomineralized euarthropods characterized by the complete fusion of post‐cephalic tergo‐pleurae into a single shield, as well as an extensively ramified digestive tract. Ranging from the early Cambrian to the late Silurian (Pridoli), these arthropods of simple appearance have traditionally been associated with the early diversification of trilobites and their close relatives, but the interrelationships and affinities of naraoiids within Artiopoda remain poorly characterized. Three new species from the Burgess Shale (middle Cambrian, Stage 5) of British Columbia, Canada, are described here: Misszhouia canadensis sp. nov., from Marble Canyon (Kootenay National Park), the first species belonging to the genus Misszhouia outside of China; Naraoia magna sp. nov., from Marble Canyon and also from the Raymond Quarry (Yoho National Park), the largest species of Naraoia described thus far, reaching up to 9 cm in length; and Naraoia arcana sp. nov., from two sublocalities on Mount Stephen (Yoho National Park), defined by its unusual combination of spines. This new material shows that gut morphology is no longer a reliable character to distinguish Misszhouia from Naraoia. We demonstrate that Naraoia and Misszhouia can instead be discriminated morphometrically, based on simple metrics of the dorsal exoskeleton. Our quantitative results also help with inter‐specific discrimination and illustrate possible cases of sexual dimorphism. Phylogenetically, the inclusion of morphometric data adds resolution to our cladogram, although parsimony and likelihood treatments provide somewhat different evolutionary scenarios. In all cases, liwiines are nested within Naraoiidae, resolved as the most derived clade of trilobitomorph arthropods.  相似文献

In the past decades, it has been debated whether ecological niche should be conserved among closely related species (phylogenetic niche conservatism, PNC) or largely divergent (traditional ecological niche theory and ecological speciation) and whether niche specialist and generalist might remain in equilibrium or niche generalist could not appear. In this study, we employed morphological traits to describe ecological niche and test whether different niche dimensions exhibit disparate evolutionary patterns. We conducted our analysis on three Rhinogobio fish species (R. typus, R. cylindricus, and R. ventralis) from the upper Yangtze River, China. Among the 32 measured morphological traits except body length, PCA extracted the first four principal components with their loading scores >1.000. To find the PNC among species, Mantel tests were conducted with the Euclidean distances calculated from the four principal components (representing different niche dimensions) against the pairwise distances calculated from mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence variations. The results showed that the second and the third niche dimension, both related to swimming ability and behavior, exhibited phylogenetic conservatism. Further comparison on niche breadth among these three species revealed that the fourth dimension of R. typus showed the greatest width, indicating that this dimension exhibited niche generalism. In conclusion, our results suggested that different niche dimensions could show different evolutionary dynamic patterns: they may exhibit PNC or not, and some dimensions may evolve generalism.  相似文献

Distance and discrete geographic barriers play a role in isolating populations, as seed and pollen dispersal become limited. Nearby populations without any geographic barrier between them may also suffer from ecological isolation driven by habitat heterogeneity, which may promote divergence by local adaptation and drift. Likewise, elevation gradients may influence the genetic structure and diversity of populations, particularly those marginally distributed. Bathysa australis (Rubiaceae) is a widespread tree along the elevation gradient of the Serra do Mar, SE Brazil. This self‐compatible species is pollinated by bees and wasps and has autochoric seeds, suggesting restricted gene dispersal. We investigated the distribution of genetic diversity in six B. australis populations at two extreme sites along an elevation gradient: a lowland site (80–216 m) and an upland site (1010–1100 m.a.s.l.). Nine microsatellite loci were used to test for genetic structure and to verify differences in genetic diversity between sites. We found a marked genetic structure on a scale as small as 6 km (FST = 0.21), and two distinct clusters were identified, each corresponding to a site. Although B. australis is continuously distributed along the elevation gradient, we have not observed a gene flow between the extreme populations. This might be related to B. australis biological features and creates a potential scenario for adaptation to the different conditions imposed by the elevation gradient. We failed to find an isolation‐by‐distance pattern; although on the fine scale, all populations showed spatial autocorrelation until ~10‐20 m. Elevation difference was a relevant factor though, but we need further sampling effort to check its correlation with genetic distance. The lowland populations had a higher allelic richness and showed higher rare allele counts than the upland ones. The upland site may be more selective, eliminating rare alleles, as we did not find any evidence for bottleneck.  相似文献

Patulin (PAT) is a mycotoxin produced by several species of the genera of Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Byssochlamys principally by Penicillium expansum. This mycotoxin is suspected to affect several organs including kidney and liver. However, its toxic effect on heart remains unknown. The present study investigated for the first time the cardiotoxic effect of PAT in mice. We demonstrated that PAT increased creatinin phosphokinase (CPK) level, induced lipoperoxydation and protein oxidation, and triggered the antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. We also demonstrated that acute administration of PAT triggers apoptosis via P53 overexpression and caspase 3 activation. We further investigated the antioxidant efficiency of crocin (CRO), a carotenoid pigment, against PAT‐induced cardiotoxicity. We found that pretreatment with CRO prevents cardiac impairment by reducing CPK levels, restoring the redox statute and suppressing apoptosis. Collectively, our data provide new preventive effect of CRO toward PAT‐induced cardiotoxicity in mice.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the use of targeted multiplex Nanopore MinION amplicon re-sequencing of key Candida spp. from blood culture bottles to identify azole and echinocandin resistance associated SNPs. Targeted PCR amplification of azole (ERG11 and ERG3) and echinocandin (FKS) resistance-associated loci was performed on positive blood culture media. Sequencing was performed using MinION nanopore device with R9.4.1 Flow Cells. Twenty-eight spiked blood cultures (ATCC strains and clinical isolates) and 12 prospectively collected positive blood cultures with candidaemia were included. Isolate species included Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis and Candida auris. SNPs that were identified on ERG and FKS genes using Snippy tool and CLC Genomic Workbench were correlated with phenotypic testing by broth microdilution (YeastOne™ Sensititre). Illumina whole-genome-sequencing and Sanger-sequencing were also performed as confirmatory testing of the mutations identified from nanopore sequencing data. There was a perfect agreement of the resistance-associated mutations detected by MinION-nanopore-sequencing compared to phenotypic testing for acquired resistance (16 with azole resistance; 3 with echinocandin resistance), and perfect concordance of the nanopore sequence mutations to Illumina and Sanger data. Mutations with no known association with phenotypic drug resistance and novel mutations were also detected.  相似文献

Autosomal recessive disorders such as Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy, Walker–Warburg syndrome, and the muscle–eye–brain disease are characterized by defects in the development of patient's brain, eyes, and skeletal muscles. These syndromes are accompanied by brain malformations like type II lissencephaly in the cerebral cortex with characteristic overmigrations of neurons through the breaches of the pial basement membrane. The signaling pathways activated by laminin receptors, dystroglycan and integrins, control the integrity of the basement membrane, and their malfunctioning may underlie the pathologies found in the rise of defects reminiscent of these syndromes. Similar defects in corticogenesis and neuromuscular disorders were found in mice when RIC8A was specifically removed from neural precursor cells. RIC8A regulates a subset of G‐protein α subunits and in several model organisms, it has been reported to participate in the control of cell division, signaling, and migration. Here, we studied the role of RIC8A in the development of the brain, muscles, and eyes of the neural precursor‐specific conditional Ric8a knockout mice. The absence of RIC8A severely affected the attachment and positioning of radial glial processes, Cajal‐Retzius’ cells, and the arachnoid trabeculae, and these mice displayed additional defects in the lens, skeletal muscles, and heart development. All the discovered defects might be linked to aberrancies in cell adhesion and migration, suggesting that RIC8A has a crucial role in the regulation of cell–extracellular matrix interactions and that its removal leads to the phenotype characteristic to type II lissencephaly‐associated diseases. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The importance and prevalence of phylogenetic tracking between hosts and dependent organisms caused by co‐evolution and shifting between closely related host species have been debated for decades. Most studies of phylogenetic tracking among phytophagous insects and their host plants have been limited to insects feeding on a narrow range of host species. However, narrow host ranges can confound phylogenetic tracking (phylogenetic tracking hypothesis) with host shifting between hosts of intermediate relationship (intermediate hypothesis). Here, we investigated the evolutionary history of the Enchenopa binotata complex of treehoppers. Each species in this complex has high host fidelity, but the entire complex uses hosts across eight plant orders. The phylogenies of E. binotata were reconstructed to evaluate whether (1) tracking host phylogeny; or (2) shifting between intermediately related host plants better explains the evolutionary history of E. binotata. Our results suggest that E. binotata primarily shifted between both distant and intermediate host plants regardless of host phylogeny and less frequently tracked the phylogeny of their hosts. These findings indicate that phytophagous insects with high host fidelity, such as E. binotata, are capable of adaptation not only to closely related host plants but also to novel hosts, likely with diverse phenology and defense mechanisms.  相似文献
