Background

Empathy in humans is thought to have evolved via social interactions caused by the formation of social groups. Considering the role of empathy within a social group, there might be a difference between emotional empathy for strangers and familiar others belonging to the same social group. In this study, we used the global field power (GFP) index to investigate empathic brain activity during observation of a cue indicating either a negative or positive image viewed by a stranger or close friend.

Methods

Sixteen healthy participants observed a partner performing an emotional gambling task displayed on a monitor. After the partner''s choice-response, a frowning or smiling face symbol was simultaneously presented to the participant’s monitor while a negative or positive emotional image was presented to the partner’s monitor. All participants observed a control condition (CT) showing a computer trial, a stranger-observation condition (SO) showing the trial of a stranger, and a friend-observation condition (FO) to observe the trial of a close friend. During these observations, participants’ event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to calculate GFP, and after the task, a subjective assessment of their feelings was measured.

Results

Positive emotion was significantly larger under the FO compared to the CT and the SO. Significantly larger negative emotion was found under the SO and FO compared to the CT. In response to a positive cue, significantly larger GFP during 300 to 600 ms was observed under the FO compared to the CT and SO. In response to a negative cue, significantly larger GFP was observed under the FO and SO compared to the CT. A significantly larger GFP under the SO was found in response to only a negative cue. Topographic map analysis suggested that these differences were related to frontal-occipital dynamics. GFP was significantly correlated with empathic trait.

Conclusion

These results revealed that familiarity with another person has different effects depending on the valence of empathy. Negative empathy, including the danger perception function, might easily occur even among strangers, whereas positive empathy related to nursing and supporting an inner group does not happen easily with strangers.  相似文献

Background

Previous research has shown that emotion can significantly impact decision-making in humans. The current study examined whether or not and how situationally induced emotion influences people to make inter-temporal choices.

Methods

Affective pictures were used as experiment stimuli to provoke emotion, immediately followed by subjects’ performance of a delay-discounting task to measure impulsivity during functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Results

Results demonstrate a subsequent process of increased impulsive decision-making following a prior exposure to both high positive and negative arousal stimuli, compared to the experiment subjects’ experiences with neutral stimuli. Findings indicate that increased impulsive decision-making behaviors can occur with high arousal and can be characterized by decreased activities in the cognitive control regions such as prefronto-parietal regions.

Conclusions

These results suggest that ‘stabilization of high emotional arousal’ may facilitate a reduction of impulsive decision-making and implementation of longer term goals.  相似文献

BackgroundSmall caliber vascular prostheses are not clinically available because synthetic vascular prostheses lack endothelial cells which modulate platelet activation, leukocyte adhesion, thrombosis, and the regulation of vasomotor tone by the production of vasoactive substances. We developed a novel method to create scaffold-free tubular tissue from multicellular spheroids (MCS) using a “Bio-3D printer”-based system. This system enables the creation of pre-designed three-dimensional structures using a computer controlled robotics system. With this system, we created a tubular structure and studied its biological features.ConclusionsThe scaffold-free tubular tissues made of MCS using a Bio-3D printer underwent remodeling and endothelialization. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanism of endothelialization and its function, as well as the long-term results.  相似文献

Background and Objectives

Recent reports indicate that the incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterial-lung disease (NTM-LD) is increasing. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and clinical features of NTM-LD patients in Nagasaki prefecture, Japan to identify the negative prognostic factors for NTM-LD in Japan.

Methods

The medical records of patients newly diagnosed with NTM-LD in eleven hospitals in Nagasaki prefecture between January 2001 and February 2010 were reviewed. Data regarding the annual population of each region and the incidence of all forms of tuberculosis were collected to assess geographic variations in NTM-LD incidence, isolates, and radiological features.

Results

A total 975 patients were diagnosed with NTM-LD. The incidence increased over the study period and reached 11.0 and 10.1 per 100,000 population in 2008 and 2009, respectively. M. intracellulare was the most common pathogen in the southern region, and M. avium most common in other regions. The most common radiographic pattern was the nodular-bronchiectatic pattern. Age >60 years, body mass index <18.5 kg/m2, underlying lung disease, and cavitary pattern were the negative prognostic factors at the 1-year follow-up.

Conclusions

The incidence of NTM-LD has been increasing in Nagasaki prefecture. The isolates and radiographic features of patients vary markedly by region.  相似文献

Deficiency in n-3 fatty acids has been accomplished through the use of an artificial rearing method in which ICR mouse pups were hand fed a deficient diet starting from the 2nd day of life. There was a 51% loss of total brain DHA in mice with an n-3 fatty acid-deficient diet relative to those with a diet sufficient in n-3 fatty acids. n-3 fatty acid adequate and deficient mice did not differ in terms of locomotor activity in the open field test or in anxiety-related behavior in the elevated plus maze. The n-3 fatty acid-deficient mice demonstrated impaired learning in the reference-memory version of the Barnes circular maze as they spent more time and made more errors in search of an escape tunnel. No difference in performance between all dietary groups in the cued and working memory version of the Barnes maze was observed. This indicated that motivational, motor and sensory factors did not contribute to the reference memory impairment.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The role of Helicobacter pylori in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis remains controversial. The present study was designed to elucidate the pathogenic role of H. pylori in the early stages of atherosclerosis by measurement of brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in relation to glucose metabolism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: baPWV level, anti-H. pylori antibody, fasting blood glucose (FBG), and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and other conventional risk factors for cardiovascular diseases were measured in 947 subjects who attended their annual medical check-up. RESULTS: Multiple regression analyses indicated that age, gender (male), body mass index, FBG, systolic blood pressure, and smoking habits were each independently related to baPWV values. In younger subjects (30-49 years), H. pylori seropositivity was significantly correlated with an increase of baPWV levels (r = 0.100, p = .0445). baPWV values in the H. pylori-positive subjects with impaired glucose metabolism (IG: FBG >or= 110 mg/dL and/or HbA1c >or= 5.9%) were significantly greater than those in the H. pylori-negative subjects with IG (p = .0078). Furthermore, H. pylori-positive subjects with IG were at higher risk for increase of baPWV, in younger (r = 0.203, p < .0001) as well as in older subjects (50-69 years, r = 0.099, p = .0009). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that H. pylori seropositivity is a potential risk factor for increased baPWV levels, and that H. pylori infection accelerates the effect of IG on an increase of baPWV, especially in younger subjects. Thus, the possible interaction between H. pylori infection and IG may contribute to the early development of atherosclerosis.  相似文献

In Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the stability of Ti plasmids differs depending on the strain. So far, little is known about genes that cause the difference in stability. The repABC operon is responsible for replication and incompatibility of Ti plasmids. We constructed recombinant plasmids carrying the repABC operon and different portions of pTi-SAKURA. Cells having the recombinant plasmids that harbored a 2.6-kbp NheI fragment of pTi-SAKURA were found to be transformed via conjugation 100-fold less frequently with a small incompatible repABC plasmid than cells having the recombinant plasmids lacking the 2.6-kbp NheI fragment. Since the phenomenon occurred only when the resident and incoming plasmids belonged to the same incompatibility group, it was suggested that the 2.6-kbp NheI fragment bears the potential enhancing incompatibility. The fragment contained an operon consisting of two open reading frames, tiorf24 and tiorf25. tiorf24 is an orphan gene, whereas tiorf25 is a homologue of a group of plasmid stability genes. Removal of the 2.6-kbp fragment from the resident pTi-SAKURA increased the resident plasmid ejection ratio by the incoming repABC plasmid, whereas addition of the fragment to pTiC58 decreased the ejection ratio, and the loss ratio during growth at 37 degrees C. These data suggest that tiorf24 and tiorf25 are responsible for the stability of pTi-SAKURA, and reduce, in the host bacterium, the frequency of ejection of the resident plasmid, presumably through an incompatibility mechanism.  相似文献

We succeeded in regulating the growth of diatom cells on chemically modified glass surfaces. Glass surfaces were functionalized with -CF3, -CH3, -COOH, and -NH2 groups using the technique of self-assembled monolayers (SAM), and diatom cells were subsequently cultured on these surfaces. When the samples were rinsed after the adhesion of the diatom cells on the modified surfaces, the diatoms formed two dimensional arrays; this was not possible without the rinsing treatment. Furthermore, we examined the number of cells that grew and their motility by time-lapse imaging in order to clarify the interaction between the cells and SAMs. We hope that our results will be a basis for developing biodevices using living photosynthetic diatom cells.  相似文献

WNK1 and WNK4 mutations have been reported to cause pseudohypoaldosteronism type II (PHAII), an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by hyperkalemia and hypertension. To elucidate the molecular pathophysiology of PHAII, we generated Wnk4(D561A/+) knockin mice presenting the phenotypes of PHAII. The knockin mice showed increased apical expression of phosphorylated Na-Cl cotransporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubules. Increased phosphorylation of the kinases OSR1 and SPAK was also observed in the knockin mice. Apical localization of the ROMK potassium channel and transepithelial Cl(-) permeability in the cortical collecting ducts were not affected in the knockin mice, whereas activity of epithelial Na(+) channels (ENaC) was increased. This increase, however, was not evident after hydrochlorothiazide treatment, suggesting that the regulation of ENaC was not a genetic but a secondary effect. Thus, the pathogenesis of PHAII caused by a missense mutation of WNK4 was identified to be increased function of NCC through activation of the OSR1/SPAK-NCC phosphorylation cascade.  相似文献

Chromosomes and DNA sequence homologies have been studied in 15 species of North American salamander belonging to the genus Plethodon. These include 4 Eastern small species, 5 Eastern large species, 5 Western, and 1 New Mexican species. All species have 14 metacentric or sub-metacentric chromosomes. Their karyotypes are closely similar, but their C values range from 18–69 pg. DNA:DNA molecular hybridization studies showed that salamanders belonging to the same species group had between 60 and 90% of the observed repetitive DNA sequences in common, different groups of Eastern species had between 40 and 60% in common, and Eastern and Western groups had less than 10% in common. The slowly reassociating DNA sequences were also diverse among species, but higher levels of homology were observed than in the case of repetitive sequences. The New Mexican species was exceptional in showing little homology with other species with respect to either repetitive or slowly reassociating sequences.  相似文献
