The adaptation to alternate host plants of introduced herbivorous insects can be vital to agriculture due to the emergence of crop pests. Historically, it is assumed that there are trade-offs associated with the adaptation to new host plants; a generalist genotype that adapts to an alternate host is expected to have a relatively lower fitness on the ancestral host than a specialist genotype (physiological cost) or a relatively lower host-searching ability for the ancestral host plant (behavioral cost). In this study, we tested the costs of adaptation to a new host plant in the introduced herbivorous insect, Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In its native range (United States), O. communa feeds mostly on Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (Asterales: Asteraceae) and cannot utilize the related species, Ambrosia trifida L. (Asterales: Asteraceae), as a host plant. On the other hand, the introduced O. communa population in Japan utilizes A. trifida extensively, and is adapting to it, both physiologically and behaviorally. We compared larval performance on the ancestral and alternate plants and adult host-searching ability between the native and introduced beetle populations. The introduced O. communa showed higher larval survival and adult feeding preference for the alternate host plant A. trifida than did the native O. communa, indicating that the introduced O. communa has rapidly adapted to the alternate host plant. However, there are no differences in either larval performance on the ancestral host A. artemisiifolia or host-searching accuracy between the native and introduced O. communa. 相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen are essential elements for life. Glucose as a carbon source and glutamine as a nitrogen source are important nutrients for cell proliferation. About 100 years ago, it was discovered that cancer cells that have acquired unlimited proliferative capacity and undergone malignant evolution in their host manifest a cancer-specific remodeling of glucose metabolism (the Warburg effect). Only recently, however, was it shown that the metabolism of glutamine-derived nitrogen is substantially shifted from glutaminolysis to nucleotide biosynthesis during malignant progression of cancer—which might be referred to as a “second” Warburg effect. In this review, address the mechanism and relevance of this metabolic shift of glutamine-derived nitrogen in human cancer. We also examine the clinical potential of anticancer therapies that modulate the metabolic pathways of glutamine-derived nitrogen. Interaction of tea catechins with lipid bilayers has been investigated with liposome systems. Tea catechins are classified into cis-type and trans-type from the configuration of the two hydrogens at the 2 and 3 positions on the C-ring. The amount of trans-type catechins incorporated into liposomes was less than that of the respective cis-type catechins. Furthermore, the order of the partition coefficients of catechins in an n-octanol/PBS system is the same as that of the amount incorporated into liposomes. These results indicate that in addition to the number of hydroxyl groups on the B-ring and the presence of the galloyl moiety, the stereochemical structure of the C-ring also governs the hydrophobicity and the affinity for lipid bilayers. Trans-type catechins with the galloyl moiety were located on the surface of the lipid bilayer, as well as cis-type catechins with the galloyl moiety, and perturbed the membrane structure. These different stereochemical structures should influence the affinity for lipid bilayers, the alteration of membrane structures, and the difference in the order of the biological activities. 相似文献

We have developed a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for nonenzymatically glycated serum proteins. The polyclonal antibodies prepared against reduced glycated human albumin were specific for the glucitollysine residues of serum proteins. Serum proteins from diabetic patients (n = 25) contained 5.3 +/- 2.8 nmoles of glucitollysine/mg protein, compared to 2.0 +/- 0.2 in controls (n = 20). The intra- and inter-assay variables were 3.2-6.2% and 4.4-8.6%, respectively. Results from this assay procedure correlated well with those from the boronate affinity chromatography procedure (r = 0.94; P less than 0.001). The data suggested that diabetic serum proteins contained at least 2.5 times as much immunochemically detectable glucitollysine residures as normal serum proteins after reduction of the proteins with sodium borohydride. 相似文献

In Brazil, cacao is mostly planted beneath shade trees. The diversity of shade trees varies from monospecific to highly diverse canopies, characteristic of pristine Atlantic Forest. This study evaluates the relationships between family richness of Hymenoptera-Parasitica and Chrysidoidea, and tree species richness and density, the species richness of herbaceous understorey, and the area and age of the cacao agroforestry system. We sampled 16 cacao agroforestry systems, with canopy diversity ranging from one to 22 tree species per hectare, in three seasons: summer (March), winter (August) and spring (November). Parasitoids were sampled using eight Malaise-Townes traps per site. Tree species richness and density were enumerated within 1 ha at each site, and herbaceous plant species richness was calculated in eight 1 m2 plots, within the hectare. The number of parasitoid families increased with tree species richness and density in spring and summer, but decreased in winter. Neither species richness of herbaceous plants nor area and age of the system affected parasitoid family richness. We suggest that the increase of parasitoid diversity with tree species richness and density in warmer seasons reflects increasing heterogeneity and availability of resources. The decrease in parasitoid family number with tree density in winter may be due to local impoverishment of resources, leading to parasitoid emigration to neighbouring forest remnants. This result implies that a higher diversity of shade trees will help to maintain high parasitoid levels and, in consequence, higher levels of natural enemies of cacao pests, particularly in the warmer seasons. This prediction is borne out in the experience of cacao producers. The proper management of shade tree diversity will play a vital role in maintaining the sustainability of cacao agroforestry production systems in the tropics and, concurrently, will maintain high biodiversity values in these locations. 相似文献

To determine the role of repair of potentially lethal damage (PLD) in the initiation process of neoplastic transformation, Balb/c 3T3 cells treated with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) were temporarily exposed to conditioned medium obtained from density-inhibited Chinese hamster cell cultures, as a post-treatment for the induction of PLD repair. With or without this exposure, cell survival and transformation frequencies were simultaneously determined by colony-formation and focus-formation assays, respectively. Temporary exposure to conditioned medium resulted in a 20-30% increase in cell survival compared with no exposure. Post-treatment with conditioned medium resulted in a 60-65% reduction in transformation frequencies. At the molecular level, the repair of MNNG-induced single-strand breaks of DNA occurred much more rapidly in conditioned medium. These data suggest that PLD repair reduces the in vitro neoplastic transformation through excision repair operative during the cessation of DNA replication. Thus, PLD repair appears to be preventive against neoplastic fixation in initiation of neoplastic development. 相似文献

Bacterial lipoproteins are believed to exist in only one specific lipid-modified structure, such as the diacyl form or the triacyl form, in each bacterium. In the case of Staphylococcus aureus, recent extensive matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry analysis revealed that S. aureus lipoproteins exist in the α-aminoacylated triacyl form. Here, we discovered conditions that induce the accumulation of diacyl lipoproteins that lack α-aminoacylation in S. aureus. The accumulation of diacyl lipoproteins required a combination of conditions, including acidic pH and a post-logarithmic-growth phase. High temperatures and high salt concentrations additively accelerated the accumulation of the diacyl lipoprotein form. Following a post-logarithmic-growth phase where S. aureus MW2 cells were grown at pH 6, SitC lipoprotein was found almost exclusively in its diacyl structure rather than in its triacyl structure. This is the first report showing that the environment mediates lipid-modified structural alterations of bacterial lipoproteins. 相似文献
