In contemporary human societies, where direct male-male competition is reduced compared to ancestral societies, sporting competitions remain an avenue for status acquisition via intra-sexual competition. Beards are the most visually salient and sexually dimorphic of men's secondary sexual traits and play a strong role in communicating masculinity, dominance and aggressiveness intra-sexually. Hypotheses have been advanced that beards provide advantages in intra-sexual combat, as protective organs and honest signals of fighting ability. Here we provide the first test of these hypotheses using data from professional mixed martial arts fighters competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. We explored whether secondary sexual traits (height, weight, beardedness), fighting stance (southpaw, orthodox), arm reach and past contest experiences impact on contest outcomes. If beards function as protective organs, bearded fighters should succumb to fewer knock-outs, and hence protection to injuries to the jaw, fewer abrasions and lacerations to the face and brain damage than clean-shaven fighters. Alternatively, if beards signal fighting ability then bearded fighters should win more fights. We found no evidence that beardedness was associated with fewer losses by knock-out or greater fighter ability. While fighters with longer reaches won more fights, neither stance nor past experience influenced fight outcomes. We suggest that beards represent dishonest signals of formidability that may serve to curtail the escalation of intra-sexual conflict through intimidation rather than providing advantages in direct combat.  相似文献

Large-scale trials of a trapping system designed to collect silvatic Triatominae are reported. Live-baited adhesive traps were tested in various ecosystems and different triatomine habitats (arboreal and terrestrial). The trials were always successful, with a rate of positive habitats generally over 20% and reaching 48.4% for palm trees of the Amazon basin. Eleven species of Triatominae belonging to the three genera of public health importance (Triatoma, Rhodnius and Panstrongylus) were captured. This trapping system provides an effective way to detect the presence of triatomines in terrestrial and arboreal silvatic habitats and represents a promising tool for ecological studies. Various lines of research are contemplated to improve the performance of this trapping system.  相似文献

Autotransporter (AT) proteins have been identified in many Gram-negative pathogens and are unique in that their primary sequence is sufficient to direct their transport across the bacterial membrane system. Where characterized they are uniformly associated with virulence. Using conserved AT motifs as a search tool, four putative AT proteins were identified in the Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 EDL933 genome. The genes encoding these proteins (z0402/ ehaA , z0469/ ehaB , z3487/ ehaC and z3948/ ehaD ) were PCR amplified, cloned and expressed in an E. coli K-12 MG1655 flu background. Preliminary characterization revealed that ehaA , ehaB and ehaD encode proteins associated with increased biofilm formation. One of these genes ( ehaA ) resides on a genomic island in E. coli O157:H7 strains EDL933 and Sakai. Over-expression of EhaA in E. coli K-12 demonstrated it is located at the cell surface and resulted in the formation of large cell aggregates, promoted significant biofilm formation and mediated adhesion to primary epithelial cells of the bovine terminal rectum. The expression of ehaA was demonstrated in E. coli EDL933 by RT-PCR. An EhaA-specific antibody revealed the EhaA protein was expressed in 24/50 generic Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strains of various serotypes including O157:H7. However, the deletion of ehaA from E. coli EDL933 and a STEC strain from serotype O111:H did not affect biofilm growth. Our results suggest that EhaA may contribute to adhesion, colonization and biofilm formation by E. coli O157:H7 and possibly other STEC serotypes.  相似文献

Fate of urine nitrogen on mineral and peat soils in New Zealand   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A field lysimeter experiment was conducted over 150 days to examine the fate of synthetic urinary nitrogen (N) applied to peat and mineral soils, with and without a water table. At the start of the winter season, synthetic urine labelled with 15N, was applied at 500 kg N ha–1. Plant uptake, leaching losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes were monitored. Total plant uptake ranged from 11% to 35% of the urine-N applied depending on soil type and treatment. Plant uptake of applied N was greater in the presence of a water table in the mineral soil. Nitrate-N (NO3 --N) was only detected in leachates from the mineral soil, at concentrations up to 146 g NO3 --N mL–1. Presence of a water table in the mineral soil reduced leaching losses (as inorganic-N) from 47% to 6%, incrased plant uptake and doubled apparent denitrification losses. In the peat soils leaching losses of applied urine-N as inorganic-N were low (<5%). Losses of N as N2O were greater in the mineral soil than in the peat soils, with losses of 3% and <1% of N applied respectively after 100 days. Apparent denitrification losses far exceeded N2O losses and it is postulated that the difference could be due to dinitrogen (N2) loss and soil entrapment of N2.  相似文献

Earthworms are important soil organisms yet we have limited knowledge on the geographical distribution of species. Using data from a variety of sources representing a total of 3,941 locality records we have produced the first distribution maps of earthworm species in the British Isles The maps highlight the paucity of knowledge on this ecologically important group. A systematic approach needs to be taken to bring earthworm species data to a level comparable with other important invertebrate groups such as nematodes and isopods. Through the recent establishment of an earthworm recording scheme, the Earthworm Society of Britain, working with the Biological Records Centre and earthworm researchers across the British Isles, aim to build comprehensive distribution information for future monitoring and research purposes.  相似文献
