The influence of cholesterol on head group mobility in phospholipid membranes

The dielectric dispersion in the MHz range of the zwitterionic dipolar phosphocholine head groups has been measured from 0–70°C for various mixtures of $\text{1,2-}\text{dipalmitoyl}\text{-sn-}\text{glycero-3-phosphocholine}$ (DPPC) and cholesterol. The abrupt change in the derived relaxation frequency $\text{f}{}_2$ observed for pure DPPC at the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition at 42°C reduces to a more gradual increase of frequency with temperature as the cholesterol content is increased. In general the presence of cholesterol increases the DPPC head group mobility due to its spacing effect. Below 42°C no sudden changes in $\text{f}{}_2$ are found at 20 or 33 mol% cholesterol, where phase boundaries have been suggested from other methods. Above 42°C, however, a decrease in $\text{f}{}_2$ at cholesterol contents up to 20–30 mol% is found. This is thought to be partly due to an additional restricting effect of the cholesterol on the number of hydrocarbon chain conformations and consequently on the area occupied by the DPPC molecules.     

Familiarity accentuates gaze cuing in women but not men

Gaze cuing, the tendency to shift attention in the direction other individuals are looking, is hypothesized to depend on a distinct neural module. One expectation of such a module is that information processing should be encapsulated within it. Here, we tested whether familiarity, a type of social knowledge, penetrates the neural circuits governing gaze cuing. Male and female subjects viewed the face of an adult male looking left or right and then pressed a keypad to indicate the location of a target appearing randomly left or right. Responses were faster for targets congruent with gaze direction. Moreover, gaze cuing was stronger in females than males. Contrary to the modularity hypothesis, familiarity enhanced gaze cuing, but only in females. Sex differences in the effects of familiarity on gaze cuing may reflect greater adaptive significance of social information for females than males.     

Inhibition of GABA uptake potentiates the effects of exogenous GABA on locust skeletal muscle

Insect skeletal muscle is relatively insensitive to applied GABA, responses are elicited only when relatively high concentrations of GABA are used (greater than 10(-6) M). Pretreatment of the muscle with the GABA uptake inhibitors nipecotic acid, beta-aminobutyric acid or beta-alanine increases the sensitivity of the muscle to GABA by as much as 1000-fold. The evidence suggests the existence of a GABA uptake mechanism in the insect neuromuscular system which could reside in glial cells.     

The cellular location of proteases in Candida albicans

Vacuoles prepared from yeast cells of Candida albicans were enriched in proteinase ycaB (EC 3.4.21.48) but not in aminopeptidase or beta-glucosidase. Proteinase ycaB, assayed in situ, increased 1.5-fold during starvation whereas aminopeptidase activity decreased by 25%. Proteinase ycaB increased a further 1.5-fold during germ-tube formation.     

Oxypetalum banksii subsp. banksii: a taxon of Asclepiadaceae with an extragynoecial compitum

 The floral morphology of seven Oxypetalum species and, in particular, the spatial relationship between the five stigmatic chambers and two separate ovaries of their flowers with respect to transmission of the pollen tube are studied. In all species, except O. banksii subsp. banksii, floral morphology is similar to that in other Asclepiadeae, and the flowers pollinated with one pollinium develop only one follicle, which means compitum absence. In O. banksii subsp. banksii flowers, the secretory interstaminal tissue lines the inner walls of the stigmatic chambers as in the other species studied, but it also reaches the upper part of the inner surface of the filament tube, where it surrounds the styles, an unprecedented feature for Asclepiadaceae. This tissue secretes nectar and mucilage; the latter acts as transmitting medium for the growth of pollen tubes from pollinia inserted and hydrated in stigmatic chambers (“hyperstigmas”). Mucilage also functions as an extragynoecial compitum: in flowers pollinated with one pollinium both carpels develop into a follicle. Should doctors be more proactive as advocates for victims of violence?

Currently the management of adult victims of violence by general practitioners and accident and emergency departments is reactive, concerned almost exclusively with the management of physical injuries. Professor Jonathan Shepherd outlines some ideas for a more proactive approach on the part of doctors to improve the protection and support of vulnerable people; to deal with psychological sequelae; to take the responsibility of making an official complaint to the police away from seriously injured people, who are unable to give or withhold consent to disclosure; and to prevent assailants inflicting further injuries. We asked a sociologist, a psychiatrist, a moral philosopher, and a police surgeon for their comments.
