Reproductive wastage was evaluated by relating ovulation rate to lambs born or raised in range finewool ewes over a ten-year period. The results indicate that reproductive losses are of large magnitude and that these losses are concentrated in the period of ovulation to implantation and in death losses of lambs born. In this study, 33.5% of the potential lamb crop was lost in the early period. Multiple ovulating ewes showed the greatest embryonic loss. The data do not deviate from the binomial distribution, thus suggesting that these losses are largely due to chance. Further work is indicated in the first seventeen days after ovulation to examine losses due to fertilization failure, chromosomal abnormalities, and implantation failure. Abortion or absorption of the fetus was indicated in only 4% of the ewes sampled. An average of 16% of the potential lamb crop was lost from birth to weaning, with 73% of these losses occurring in the first few weeks. Management practices need to be developed to reduce these losses, and these would be expected to vary from one producer to the next depending on conditions. Increasing ovulation rate is one possible method of improving reproductive efficiency, as results of this study indicate that for each unit increase in ovulation rate, there is an increase of 0.52, 0.46, 0.33, and 0.23 in the average number of embryos surviving, lambs born, lambs marked and lambs weaned, respectively. 相似文献

A novel experimental method was developed which allows the determination of the threshold concentration of sucrose by use of a linear sucrose gradient in water. With this method a continuous tasting of the test-liquid is possible. A panel of 15 persons experienced in taste-testing was used. Three gradients of different steepness were applied: 0 to 1.5% (w/w) sucrose in 2 min (I), 3 min (II) and 4 min (III). The results of the new method were compared with those of the standard method (DIN). With gradients I and II we found values which were significantly higher than those of the standard method (I: 0.49% (w/w); II: 0.46% (w/w); DIN: 0.31% (w/w)), whereas with gradient III the same threshold value was found as with the DIN-Method (III: 0.32% (w/w)). 相似文献

Experiments were conducted to assess the ability of Streptomyces (strain PS1/5) to metabolize twelve herbicides representing several different classes including: acetanilides, triazines, ureas, uracils, and imidazoles. Incubations in aqueous culture with dextrin as carbon source and either ammonium or Casamino acids as nitrogen source resulted in transformations (>50%) of eight of the herbicides tested: alachlor, metolachlor, atrazine, prometryne, ametryne, linuron, tebuthiuron, and bromacil; the remaining four herbicides (cyanazine, diuron, metribuzin, and imazapyr) were also transformed, but to a lesser extent. In most instances, biotransformations occurred concurrently with growth and results were consistent regardless of the nitrogen source (ammonium vs. Casamino acids). However, in some instances there were differences in rates of biotransformation as a consequence of the nitrogen source (e.g. alachlor, metribuzin), suggesting the selective induction of certain metabolic enzymes; in other instances biotransformations were not associated with growth, suggesting secondary metabolism. An experiment was also conducted to assess the ability of Streptomyces (strain PS1/5) to metabolize atrazine contaminated soil. Inoculation of soil amended with 20 g/g of atrazine and 5% chitin as carbon source resulted in ca. 78% removal of atrazine within 28 days. Trichogramma ostriniae has been identified as a candidate for biological control ofOstrinia nubilalis. As little was known about the biology of this parasitoid when reared onO. nubilalis, we undertook experiments to quantify biological parameters important to mass-rearing and ase ofT. ostriniae. When reared continuously onO. nubilalis, femaleT. ostriniae on average lived 2.7 days and produced 24 progeny. Continuous access to honey resulted in a four-fold increase in longevity and fecundity and a significant increase in the percentage of females parasitizing eggs. Rates of fecundity and parasitism decreased with age of female. Likewise, emergence rates and percentage of female progeny decreased with age of parental female.T. ostriniae successfully parasitizedO. nubilalis eggs until the blackhead stage. Most parasitism of eggs and eclosion of adults occurred during the first half of photophase. Eggs of 13 Lepidopterans were parasitized byT. ostriniae. A total of 24 commercial fields of cabbages and Brussels sprouts were sampled in a grid fashion with 20–25 equally spaced
cells with four plants per cell. Using this data base of 80–100 plants, we conducted computer stimulations to compare the
treatment decisions that would be made for the major insect pests using published sequential sampling programs and a newly
developed variable-intensity sampling program. Additionally, we compared the number of samples required to make the decision.
At low thresholds (10–20%) for both Lepidoptera and cabbage aphids, variable intensity-sampling required a smaller sample
size and provided more reliable decisions, while at high thresholds (40–50%) sequential sampling provided more reliable decisions.
In both procedures, the occurrence of incorrect decisions was minimal. The number of cases in which a decision would not be
reached after a 40-plant sample was lower for variable-intensity sampling. Considering the number of samples required to make
a correct decision and the greater need for reliable decisions at lower thresholds, variable-intensity sampling was superior
to sequential sampling. Additionally, variable-intensity sampling has the advantage of requiring samples to be taken in a
greater area of the field and thus increases the probability of detecting localized infestations. Although variable-intensity
sampling was not designed to classify pest populations for treatment decisions but rather to achieve sampling precision around
the population mean, our present studies indicate that it can also be an effective method to aid in treatment decisions. 相似文献

S-ethyldipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) applied as a soil treatment or over-the-top spray on cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea L.) caused the leaves to turn ‘glossy’ for as long as 30 days. EPTC-induced glossy plants were damaged significantly less
than untreated plants by diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella (L.), imported cabbage worm,Pieris rapae (L.), and cabbage looper,Trichoplusia ni (Hbn.). Reductions in damage were equivalent to those obtained from treatment with permethrin. When used in combination with
permethrin, EPTC provided additive control of damage by these pests. Our calculations show EPTC-induced resistance to be cost-effective.
This use of EPTC has several limitations, however. Younger plants (<9 leaves) were killed or injured by the herbicide. The
growth of older plants was not affected, but plants did not become glossy for ca. 10 days after they were treated with EPTC.
The crop must be protected with insecticides until the plants are mature enough to treat with EPTC, and until treated plants
become glossy. In addition, since the glossy trait is only effective against first instar larvae, populations of later instars
on glossy plants must be reduced with an application of insecticide. Finally, EPTC formulations are water-soluble and can
be washed away from the plants by heavy rains and irrigation, which may make this use of EPTC impractical in some situations.
Where its use is practical, and the indicated precautions are taken, EPTC-induced resistance could reduce dependence on chemical
insecticides and reduce selection for insecticide resistance in diamondback moth. 相似文献

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is common and associated with multiple serious public health implications. A consensus definition of TRD with demonstrated predictive utility in terms of clinical decision-making and health outcomes does not currently exist. Instead, a plethora of definitions have been proposed, which vary significantly in their conceptual framework. The absence of a consensus definition hampers precise estimates of the prevalence of TRD, and also belies efforts to identify risk factors, prevention opportunities, and effective interventions. In addition, it results in heterogeneity in clinical practice decision-making, adversely affecting quality of care. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have adopted the most used definition of TRD (i.e., inadequate response to a minimum of two antidepressants despite adequacy of the treatment trial and adherence to treatment). It is currently estimated that at least 30% of persons with depression meet this definition. A significant percentage of persons with TRD are actually pseudo-resistant (e.g., due to inadequacy of treatment trials or non-adherence to treatment). Although multiple sociodemographic, clinical, treatment and contextual factors are known to negatively moderate response in persons with depression, very few factors are regarded as predictive of non-response across multiple modalities of treatment. Intravenous ketamine and intranasal esketamine (co-administered with an antidepressant) are established as efficacious in the management of TRD. Some second-generation antipsychotics (e.g., aripiprazole, brexpiprazole, cariprazine, quetiapine XR) are proven effective as adjunctive treatments to antidepressants in partial responders, but only the olanzapine-fluoxetine combination has been studied in FDA-defined TRD. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is established as effective and FDA-approved for individuals with TRD, with accelerated theta-burst TMS also recently showing efficacy. Electroconvulsive therapy is regarded as an effective acute and maintenance intervention in TRD, with preliminary evidence suggesting non-inferiority to acute intravenous ketamine. Evidence for extending antidepressant trial, medication switching and combining antidepressants is mixed. Manual-based psychotherapies are not established as efficacious on their own in TRD, but offer significant symptomatic relief when added to conventional antidepressants. A member of Ising's family of large transposing elements (TEs) has inserted into, or very near, the crinkled (ck, 2–50) locus. This TE (TE36) carries functional alleles of both the white and roughest loci, and causes a hypomorphic mutation of ck. The TE is visible in polytene chromosomes as a two-banded insertion between 35B9 and 35C1. These bands show homology to foldback (FB) elements by in situ hybridization.
