Nonocclusive Hemorrhagic Necrosis of the Intestine

Hemorrhagic intestinal necrosis occurs without demonstrable mechanical obstruction of the mesenteric vascular supply. The etiologic factors include (1) congestive heart failure, (2) cardiac arrhythmia, (3) dehydration, and (4) digitalis therapy with or without digitalis toxicity. All of these factors have been shown to result in a decrease in splanchnic blood flow. The outcome of this disease has invariably been fatal. Early recognition and nonoperative management directed toward increasing splanchnic blood flow are the most significant factors in the survival of patients.     

Some effects of shark nets in the Natal nearshore environment

Synopsis Protective gillnets (shark nets) have been successful in reducing the frequency of shark attacks on the coast of Natal, South Africa. This is achieved primarily through a reduction in numbers of large sharks. The nets also take a by catch of dolphins, sea turtles, batoids and teleosts. Concern has been expressed over the direct effect of mortalities on the various stocks and also the broader, indirect effects on the inshore system. Catch rates of most shark species declined initially but have shown no trend since the mid-1970s. A first estimate of the reduction in total shark numbers is provided, and factors such as stock identity and net avoidance are discussed. Turtle and teleost stocks do not appear to be threatened by net mortalities but marine mammalogists are investigating the sustainability of catches of two dolphin species. Certain batoids may have declined despite a high release rate, but more data are needed. A published contention that shark netting has resulted in a proliferation of small sharks through reduced predation is re-examined and considered to be exaggerated. Reduced predation on dolphins, as a result of shark netting, is estimated.     

Structural Requirements for Cocaine-Sensitive and -Insensitive Uptake of Phenethylamines into the Adrenal Chromaffin Cell

Abstract: The adrenal medullary chromaffin cell is a commonly used model for the adrenergic neuron. Although much work has been done to study the transport system in the adrenal chromaffin vesicles, relatively little is known about cellular transport, especially with regard to structural features of phenethylamines required for intracellular accumulation. We have now investigated the structural requirements of phenethylamine-related compounds for their accumulation into cultured adrenal chromaffin cells. We find that two types of cellular uptake, previously described only for dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, are also present for [³H]tyramine. Although two types of accumulation occur, tyramine accumulation occurs mainly via a cocaine-insensitive process, whereas dopamine accumulation occurs predominantly via a cocaine-sensitive process. The accumulation of [¹⁴C]-phenethylamine and p-methoxyphenethylamine is not affected by cocaine, suggesting that a ring hydroxyl substituent is necessary for cocaine-sensitive accumulation. The compounds p-hydroxyphenylpropylamine and p-hydroxyphenyl-2-aminoethyl sulfide accumulate in the cell only via a cocaine-insensitive process, indicating that lengthening of the aminoalkyl side chain prevents cocaine-sensitive accumulation. We have performed conformational analyses of this series of compounds to determine whether the conformation of these compounds can be related to the kinetic data. For dopamine, tyramine, phenethylamine, and p-methoxyphenethylamine, two groups of energy-minimized conformers were found. We find that there is an approximately linear relationship between the K_m values for these phenethylamines and the differences in minimized energies between the low- and highest energy conformer groups of each compound. A similar correlation was found for p-hydroxyphenyl-2-aminoethyl sulfide. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that these compounds undergo a conformational change from the low-energy conformer to the highest energy conformer before their cocaine-insensitive accumulation.     

Conservation in Saudi Arabia; moving from strategy to practice

Conservation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is relatively young, yet have made considerable gains in conservation through strategic proclamation and reintroductions. Changes in land use, illegal hunting and competition with domestic stock has decimated the native ungulates, meaning that the survival of the native ungulate species is now completely dependent on protected area network. The challenge is to sustain this network to make meaningful conservation impact into the future. We review the status of ungulate conservation in Saudi Arabia and highlight that the conservation strategy is well developed. The major challenge faced in conservation in Saudi Arabia now is to implement what has been sanctioned.
