Neurite-promoting factors from a sympathetically innervated target tissue

Previous studies have demonstrated that various cell types can produce and secrete polyornithine-attachable neurite promoting factors when cultured. This study describes an endogenous source of polyornithine-attachable neurite promoting factors. The active material extracted from an avian smooth muscle, the expansor secundariorum, is able to enhance neurite outgrowth from embryonic chick sympathetic neurons when applied to a polyornithine substrate. Unlike other polyornithine attachable factors, the material is also able to support the neurons for at least 72 hr in the absence of any added survival factors. Partial purification of the active material was achieved by affinity chromatography on polyornithine-Sepharose. The findings support the proposal that neurite promoting factors may have a definite physiological role in addition to their well established in vitro activity.     

Stability of neuronal and glial marker enzymes in post-mortem rat brain

The enzymatic activities in post-mortem rat brain kept at 4°C and at 25°C were determined for a number of enzymes localized in specific cell types in the central nervous system. Choline acetyltransferase (CAT), glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH), glutamine synthetase (GS), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and 2,3-cyclic nucleotide phosphohydrolase (CNPase) were found to be very stable at both 4°C and 25°C with only slight, if any, losses of activity being seen even at periods as long as 72 hr. Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity was less stable than that of the other enzymes. In brains kept at 4°C GAD activity was stable out to 24 hr after which it began to decline rapidly to 65% of control at 72 hr. In brains kept at 25°C, GAD activity was stable for 6–8 hr and then began to steadily decline to 58% of control at 24 hr and 29% of control at 72 hr. Assuming that these enzymes have similar stabilities in post-mortem human brain, the effect of post-mortem delay in processing tissues may be of lesser significance than other factors with regard to the measured enzyme activities in human brain samples.     

Grey seals, Halichoerus grypus, of the Dee Estuary and observations on a characteristic skin lesion in British seals

Grey seals on the West Hoyle Bank feed on a variety of fish and have a high incidence of dermal lesions, often associated with emaciation and nematode parasite infection. Corynebacterium phocae has been isolated from an active lesion. The significance of large numbers of seals in the Dee Estuary bearing lesions is discussed and the occurrence of seals with lesions elsewhere in British waters is reviewed. No evidence was found to associate the dermal lesions with any environmental factor and it is probable that lesions develop as a result of infection of minor wounds.     

IS THERE BIDIRECTIONAL TRANSPORT OF NORADRENALINE IN SYMPATHETIC NERVES?

The experiments were designed to detect somatopetal transport of [¹⁴C]noradrenaline in the postganglionic sympathetic nerves supplying the cat spleen and sheep eye. The animals were treated with nialamide to protect the radioactive noradrenaline, after uptake into the nerve terminals, from monoamine oxidase. In the spleen, the transmitter stores were labelled by infusion of [¹⁴C]noradrenaline into a branch of the splenic artery. The branches of the nerves to the infused and non-infused sides of the spleen were ligated in an attempt to arrest, distal to the constriction, any noradrenaline transported somatopetally in the axons from their terminals. After 24 hr, however, there was less radioactivity in the nerves distal compared to proximal to the constriction, despite heavier labelling of the terminal transmitter stores in the infused portion of the spleen. The proximal accumulation of radioactivity could be attributed to a somatofugal transport of [¹⁴C]noradrenaline. Experiments were also done on the intact sympathetic nerve supply of the sheep eye. The sympathetic nerve terminals in the smooth muscle of the left eye were heavily labelled 5 days after the injection of [¹⁴C]noradrenaline into the left vitreous humour. However, both superior cervical ganglia were only lightly labelled, and there was no significant difference in the radioactivity present in the two ganglia. The results provide no support for a bidirectional transport of noradrenaline in sympathetic nerves but are consistent with a somatofugal transport of the amine storage vesicles from their site of synthesis in the soma to the axon terminals.     

Circular deoxyribonucleic acid from Shigella dysenteriae Y6R

Circular deoxyribonucleic acid was isolated from Shigella dysenteriae Y6R and was found to consist of six species having molecular weights of 10(6), 1.3 x 10(6), 2.6 x 10(6), 3.8 x 10(6), 20 x 10(6), and 24 x 10(6) daltons. These size classes were partially resolved by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The minicircles (10(6) and 1.3 x 10(6)) were found to have a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.710 g/ml. The 3.8 x 10(6) dalton class had a density of 1.707 g/ml. The two largest species had a density of 1.702 g/ml. Two other strains, S. sonnei II and S. dysenteriae 60, also contained circular deoxyribonucleic acid.     

The complete heart-lead relationship in the einthoven triangle

The relationship between the source strength and the “manifest vector” in the Einthoven Triangle is derived for a line and a point dipole source and confirmed experimentally. The result permits the interpretation of the standard ECG leads in absolute terms and corrected for body size. The manifest vector is shown to be approximately times what it would be in an otherwise similar circular slab which circumscribes the triangle.     

Plasmalogenase activity in normal and demyelinating tissue of the central nervous system

1. The plasmalogenase activity of brain was found to be associated with the white matter but was absent from myelin fractions. 2. Increased enzyme activity was found in demyelinating spinal cords from vitamin B₁₂-deficient monkeys and in white matter from a patient with multiple sclerosis.     

Medical Students in Canadian Universities: Report of Statistics, 1966-67

Enrolment in the 13 Canadian medical schools in 1966-67 reached a new high of 4230, an increase of 5.1% over 1965-66. The percentage of women among medical students (12.1%) was close to that of the preceding three years. There has been a levelling off in the decline of students from outside Canada in 1966-67, when 9.5% of medical students were non-Canadian. The decline had been primarily in the number of American students, which continues. The number of students from Commonwealth countries has shown a steady increase during the eight-year period under review; in 1966-67, they make up nearly one-half of all non-Canadian students. It was noted that 18.5% of overseas students came to Canada under governmental or intergovernmental sponsorship. Of the Canadian students, 94% came from the “home” provinces of the medical schools.
