The rate of cell production in thirty-five cases of carcinoma in Bilharzial bladder was evaluated from the labelling index after in vitro incubation with [3H]TdR. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent histological type in this series and had a median LI of 8.0% which corresponds to a potential doubling time of 5.9 days. In squamous cell tumours the LI increased with the histological grade. Transitional cell tumours had a somewhat greater LI. In all histological types the LI was significantly greater in the deep infiltrating parts of the tumour than in the superficial parts. The discrepancy between the estimated potential doubling time and the growth rate normally attributed to such tumours suggests the existence of an extensive cell loss factor. Areas of focal or diffuse mucosal hyperplasia were associated with increased LI.  相似文献

Ideal coatings for orthopedic implants should be able to induce excellent osseointegration with host bone tissue, which requires good osteogenic responses and limited inflammatory reactions. Cerium oxide (CeO2) ceramics have anti-oxidative properties and can be used to decrease mediators of inflammation, making them attractive for biomedical application. In this study, two kinds of CeO2 incorporated calcium silicate coatings (CS-10Ce and CS-30Ce) were prepared via plasma spraying technique, and the effects of CeO2 addition on the responses of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and RAW264.7 macrophages were evaluated. The CS-10Ce and CS-30Ce coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. An increase in CeO2 content in the coatings resulted in enhanced chemical stability and better BMSCs osteogenic behaviors in terms of cell adhesion, proliferation, ALP activity, and mineralized nodule formation. With respect to either ZrO2-added or unmodified CS coating, the CS-30Ce coating elicited higher effects on the macrophages, suppressing the gene expressions of pro-inflammatory (M1) markers (CCR7, IL-6, and TNF-α), while upregulating the expressions of anti-inflammatory (M2) markers (CD206, IL-1ra, and IL-10); moreover, it could also increase the expression of osteoinductive molecules (BMP2 and TGF-β1) by the macrophages. The results suggested that the regulation of BMSCs behaviors and macrophage-mediated responses at the coating’s surface was related to CeO2 incorporation. The incorporation of CeO2 in CS coatings can be a valuable strategy to promote osteogenic responses and mitigate inflammatory reactions.  相似文献

One of the most important waterway components is vegetation, which play a pivotal role in the flow and sediment transport. Vegetation environment and characteristics, including vegetation porosity or density, shape, flexibility and vegetation height, are significantly affected in vegetated channels. Various vegetation positions and arrangements such as patches significantly affect the sediment deposition rate and flow turbulence. This paper reviews recent works conducted on vegetated open channels, which include the effect of different vegetation arrangements and vegetation characteristics on mass transport and turbulence structure. Studies based on laboratory, field works, and modeling, have been reviewed based on previous methods used by different researchers. Methods used in vegetation porosity evaluation, rate of flow and sediment transport properties are presented. In short, flow and transport depend on the vegetation properties and flow structure conditions.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the wAlbB Wolbachia strain show a reduced capacity to transmit dengue virus. wAlbB has been introduced into wild Ae. aegypti populations in several field sites in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where it has persisted at high frequency for more than 2 years and significantly reduced dengue incidence. Although these encouraging results indicate that wAlbB releases can be an effective dengue control strategy, the long-term success depends on wAlbB maintaining high population frequencies and virus transmission inhibition, and both could be compromised by Wolbachia–host coevolution in the field. Here, wAlbB-carrying Ae. aegypti collected from the field 20 months after the cessation of releases showed no reduction in Wolbachia density or tissue distribution changes compared to a wAlbB laboratory colony. The wAlbB strain continued to induce complete unidirectional cytoplasmic incompatibility, showed perfect maternal transmission under laboratory conditions, and retained its capacity to inhibit dengue. Additionally, a field-collected wAlbB line was challenged with Malaysian dengue patient blood, and showed significant blocking of virus dissemination to the salivary glands. These results indicate that wAlbB continues to inhibit currently circulating strains of dengue in field populations of Ae. aegypti, and provides additional support for the continued scale-up of Wolbachia wAlbB releases for dengue control.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Novel control strategies for mosquito-borne diseases’.  相似文献

Stem cells can be used to repair dysfunctional and injured (or cancerous) tissues by delivering therapeutics. However, in comparison with other cells, it is harder to transfect drugs or genes into stem cells. Dendrimers have been considered as efficient vectors to deliver both genes and drugs to stem cells due to their unique properties including adjustable molecular weight and size, low toxicity, high loading capacity, and having multiple peripheral chemical agents which can be functionalized to improve deliverance efficiency. In this review, we discuss dendrimer-mediated drug and gene delivery to stem cells as cellular vehicles and the role of this strategy in treating a variety of disorders via regenerative medicine approaches.  相似文献
