DNA-DNA hybridization studies show that Yaba virus-specific DNA is present in the host cell nucleus late in the infection cycle. The nuclear DNA appears to exist as a complete genome, not convalently linked to host cell DNA, as demonstrated by sedimentation analyses. The DNA apperas to be synthesized in the nucleus, since its level of incorporation of label is ten times the background incorporation detectable in the cytoplasm. Extraction of the nuclei by treatment with SDS and EDTA after precipitation with 1 M NaCl separates most of cellular DNA from the Yaba virus-specific DNA. 相似文献

Under controlled conditions, the effect of applying clip cages alone and clip cages and the chrysomelid beetle Gastrophysa viridula on systemic leaf expansion of Rumex obtusifolius was investigated. Treatments were applied to the fully expanded fourth leaf and expansion of leaf 8 was measured over a period of 22 days.
3. The application of clip cages reduced the rate at which leaf area increased and led to reductions in final leaf areas.

Blood glucose and glucose tolerance tests demonstrated that many male MM mice are diabetic. Serial urine sampling showed that the diabetes occurred only in mature MM males and consisted of a single self-limiting episode. Histological examination of the pancreas, together with measurements of body weight, glycosylated haemoglobin and plasma insulin, revealed that the diabetes was of the maturity-onset insulin-resistant type. Bacteriological examination of the urine samples showed that urinary tract infection, a known feature of male MM mice, occurred in the diabetics but only after the onset of hyperglucosuria. It was concluded that the high urinary glucose levels of diabetic MM males are of prime importance in the aetiology of the renal infection which occurs rarely in non-diabetic MM males or in other strains in the colony. An infectious aetiology for the diabetes per se was excluded by the existence of diabetes in germfree MM males. 相似文献

Stable monolayers of contact-inhibited C3H 10T1/2 cells were used in multifraction radiation experiments to measure the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) at low doses/fraction under conditions where cell cycle effects (repopulation, redistribution) were minimal. Consistent with there being a dose-dependent reduction in the OER at low doses, an extremely low OER of 1.34 was measured after 20 fractions of 1.7 Gy every 12 h. The sparing effects of fractionating radiation doses were not apparent for cells irradiated under hypoxic conditions (i.e., multifraction survivals were lower than acute single-dose values) until doses exceeding 15 Gy were reached. This result suggested a deficiency in the recovery from sublethal and/or potentially lethal damage might exist after hypoxic irradiations, thereby reducing the OER. The capacity to repair potentially lethal damage was found to be nearly the same after hypoxic as compared to aerobic irradiations. However, there was an apparent absence of sublethal damage repair by 10T1/2 cells between two hypoxic irradiations which could be a major contributing factor to the extremely low OER value measured in this multifraction schedule. 相似文献

Observations have been made on the mode of burrow construction in the snake blenny, Lumpenus lampretaeformis , under laboratory conditions. It appears that head probing and lateral oscillations of the body are principally responsible for the excavation of the burrow which is completed within 24 h. The burrow structure has been analysed in detail, showing a mean depth of 7.2 cm with a maximum observed length of 73 cm, with most systems between 20 and 35 cm in length. Initially linear burrows with two openings are usually provided with a small side tunnel, giving the system a characteristic Y-shape.
Burrow irrigation was investigated for the first time in L. lampretaeformis. The mean duration of burrow irrigation, by flexions of the tail of the fish, was 21 s with over 13 min h−1 spent in irrigating the burrow. The mean water displacement per irrigation period was 3.1 ml. The PO 2 and PCO 2 were measured in both surface water and within the burrow system of L. lampretaeformis. Surface water values for PO 2 were high (> 150 Torr) and PCO 2 low (<0.4 Torr). Hypoxic and hypercapnic conditions were measured in the burrow system itself, with PO 2 values ranging between 57 and 129 Torr and PCO 2 rising to > 1.3 Torr in some burrows.
A comparative study of Cepola rubescens burrows indicated similar surface water PO2 and PCO 2 values as in L. lampretaeformis. Burrow water PO 2 values ranged between 60 and 94 Torr, with PCO 2 values as high as 1.5 Torr being recorded. 2-Amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo(4,5-f)quinoxaline (MeIQx) is a potent mutagen found in cooked food. MeIQx and its isotopically labelled (13C, 15N2 and 14C) analogues were synthesised and used for metabolic studies in vivo. An equimolar mixture of MeIQx and its 13C, 15N2 stable isotope labelled analogue (containing tracer amounts of 14C-MeIQx) was given intraperitoneally to mice. Some 67% of the radioactivity was eliminated in urine and faeces within 24h. Four radiolabelled species were observed when urine was analysed by HPLC, corresponding to unchanged MeIQx and three more polar metabolites. Urine was analysed directly by HPLC-thermospray mass spectrometry. Four signals were observed containing the characteristic 1:1 isotopic doublet, corresponding to unchanged MeIQx, an MeIQx glucuronide, and two uncharacterized metabolites. 相似文献

Behavioral endocrinology of male rats with periodic sexual contacts with exclusive or varied females

Sexual contact keys a profound series of acute and chronic changes in males that, presumably, are orchestrated by acute pulsatile release of hormones. An experimental paradigm is reported in which male rats were paired periodically with either the same or different estrous females to receive identical amounts of copulatory experiences. Results confirmed the hypothesis that exposure to an unfamiliar female would induce a different endocrine response which would be reflected in various androgen-sensitive systems. The "successively polygynous" males showed more sexual behavior than "monogamous" males, and their respective females solicited the males differently, as well. Circulating levels of testosterone were higher immediately after sexual contact with an unfamiliar than with a familiar female partner. There were no differences in testosterone titers among the groups when the animals were killed at either 2 or 7 weeks after the final copulatory experiences. Yet, necropsies at 2 weeks postcopulation revealed that primary and secondary sex structures from polygynous males clearly were larger. Differences between the two experimental groups were reduced after 7 weeks of sexual rest, yet, polygnous males continued to show a different structural profile than the other groups. Conclusions were that males may experience greater activation of androgen-sensitive behavior and physiology following qualitatively different sexual contacts. 相似文献
