Inhibition of RNA Synthesis and the Relationship between Nucleolar and Mitotic Cycles in Zea mays Root Meristems

The relationship between nucleolar and mitotic cycles has beendetermined after treatment of root apices of Zea mays with ethidiumbromide. In the meristematic regions of the stele the two cyclesare not much displaced in relation to each other except fora delay in the onset of the disorganization phase. A few nucleolipersist into metaphase and a few nuclei undergo an amitoticdivision. In the cap initials the drug greatly delays the onsetof disorganization of the nucleolus, which normally occurs beforeprophase in this region. It also delays the completion of reorganizationso that fully organized nucleoli are no longer available duringthe last half of telophase. In the quiescent centre the onsetof disorganization and the end of reorganization of the nucleoliare also delayed in relation to mitosis. There is no evidencefor a delay in the onset of reorganization in any region ofthe meristem. Some cells form multiple micronucleoli and this aberrant behaviouroccurs more often in the cap initials than elsewhere as doesamitotic division.     

The cyclic nucleotide content of the blood plasma in mice irradiated at different doses]

Cyclic nucleotide content of plasma was shown to increase after irradiation of mice within a wide range of doses. Compared was the dynamics of changes in the cyclic nucleotide content 24 hr following irradiation with supralethal doses.     

The peculiarities of repair DNA-polymerases in the loach embryogenesis

The current concept of eukaryotic DNA polymerases is considered, which are involved in nuclear DNA repair. The data are given on a new group of DNA polymerases that maintain the integrity of DNA structures without preliminary excision of damaged regions. A special attention is paid to specific features of the functioning of repair DNA polymerases in embryogenesis of the loach. A possible existence is discussed of the previously unknown pathway of DNA repair with participation of DNA polymerase delta as independent from the nuclear antigen of proliferating cells.     

A morphometric analysis of Daniellia (Fabaceae – Caesalpinioideae)

A multivariate morphometric study of Daniellia, an endemic genus of tropical and subtropical Africa, indicates that nine species may be recognized: D. alsteeniana, D. klainei, D. oblonga, D. ogea, D. oliveri, D. pilosa, D. pynaertii, D. soyauxii and D. thurifera. In our study we found that some characters, not previously studied in detail, were significant in species delimitation: petiole indumentum, petiole width, number and position of glands on the lower surface of the leaflets and presence or absence of glands at the insertion of each pair of leaflets. The rare and scattered material of D. pilosa and D. soyauxii made their classification uncertain, although some qualitative characters support their differentiation. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 268–279.
