Past theory and research view reciprocal resource sharing as a fundamental building block of human societies. Most studies of reciprocity dynamics have focused on trading among individuals in laboratory settings. But if motivations to engage in these patterns of resource sharing are powerful, then we should observe forms of reciprocity even in highly structured group environments in which reciprocity does not clearly serve individual or group interests. To this end, we investigated whether patterns of reciprocity might emerge among teammates in professional basketball games. Using data from logs of National Basketball Association (NBA) games of the 2008–9 season, we estimated a series of conditional logistic regression models to test the impact of different factors on the probability that a given player would assist another player in scoring a basket. Our analysis found evidence for a direct reciprocity effect in which players who had “received” assists in the past tended to subsequently reciprocate their benefactors. Further, this tendency was time-dependent, with the probability of repayment highest soon after receiving an assist and declining as game time passed. We found no evidence for generalized reciprocity – a tendency to “pay forward” assists – and only very limited evidence for indirect reciprocity – a tendency to reward players who had sent others many assists. These findings highlight the power of reciprocity to shape human behavior, even in a setting characterized by extensive planning, division of labor, quick decision-making, and a focus on inter-group competition.  相似文献

The neuropeptide galanin and its three receptor subtypes (Gal R1-3) are highly expressed in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), a region of the brain that contains a large population of serotonergic neurons. Galanin is co-expressed with serotonin in approximately 40% of the DRN neurons, and galanin and GALR2 expression are elevated by antidepressants like the SSRI fluoxetine, suggesting an interaction between serotonin and galanin. The present study examines the effect of galanin (Gal 1–29), a pan ligand for GalR (1–3) and the GalR2/GalR3-selective ligand, Gal 2–11, on the electrophysiological properties of DRN serotonergic neurons in a slice preparation. We recorded from cells in the DRN with electrophysiological characteristics consistent with those of serotonergic neurons that exhibit high input resistance, large after-hyperpolarizations and long spike duration as defined by Aghajanian and Vandermaelen. Both Gal 1–29 and Gal 2–11 decreased the amplitudes pharmacologically-isolated GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) in these putative serotonergic neurons. Furthermore, based on paired pulse facilitation studies, we show that Gal 1–29 likely decreases GABA release through a presynaptic mechanism, whereas Gal 2–11 may act postsynaptically. These findings may enhance understanding of the cellular mechanisms underlying the effects of antidepressant treatments on galanin and galanin receptors in DRN. A pen study was conducted to assess the effect of providing daily copper mineral supplement, or copper wire particle (COWP) capsules, on established or incoming mixed nematode infections in young sheep. For lambs with established (6 week old) infections, COWP resulted in 97% and 56% reduction of the adult and early L4 stages of H. contortus, respectively, compared with controls (p < 0.001). Additionally there was a 74% reduction in Teladorsagia circumcincta infections in the COWP lambs compared with controls (p < 0.01). However, no effect was observed when COWP were given at the commencement of a larval dosing period of 6 weeks. There was no significant effect of copper mineral supplement (given at the recommended rate to prevent Cu deficiency) on either established, or developing parasite infections. In addition, a field trial was conducted on a commercial farm to assess the effects of COWP in the management of recurrent H. contortus infections, but lack of parasites during the grazing season prevented an adequate assessment from being made. These results indicate that there is little, if any, benefit from a parasite control standpoint in recommending copper therapy, specifically to control parasites in Swedish sheep flocks.  相似文献

Isoprene is emitted from the leaves of many plants in a light‐dependent and temperature‐sensitive manner. Plants lose a large fraction of photo‐assimilated carbon as isoprene but may benefit from improved recovery of photosynthesis following high‐temperature episodes. The capacity for isoprene emission of plants in natural conditions (assessed as the rate of isoprene emission under standard conditions) varies with weather. Temperature‐controlled greenhouses were used to study the role of temperature and light in influencing the capacity of oak leaves for isoprene synthesis. A comparison was made between the capacity for isoprene emission and the accumulation of other compounds suggested to increase thermotolerance of photosynthesis under two growth temperatures and two growth light intensities. It was found that the capacity for isoprene emission was increased by high temperature or high light. Xanthophyll cycle intermediates increased in high light, but not in high temperature, and the chloroplast small heat‐shock protein was not expressed in any of the growth conditions. Thus, of the three thermotolerance‐enhancing compounds studied, isoprene was the only one induced by the temperature used in this study.  相似文献

Proteinase-activated receptor-2 and hyperalgesia: A novel pain pathway.   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
Using a combined pharmacological and gene-deletion approach, we have delineated a novel mechanism of neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor-dependent hyperalgesia induced by proteinase-activated receptor-2 (PAR2), a G-protein-coupled receptor expressed on nociceptive primary afferent neurons. Injections into the paw of sub-inflammatory doses of PAR2 agonists in rats and mice induced a prolonged thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia and elevated spinal Fos protein expression. This hyperalgesia was markedly diminished or absent in mice lacking the NK-1 receptor, preprotachykinin-A or PAR2 genes, or in rats treated with a centrally acting cyclooxygenase inhibitor or treated by spinal cord injection of NK-1 antagonists. Here we identify a previously unrecognized nociceptive pathway with important therapeutic implications, and our results point to a direct role for proteinases and their receptors in pain transmission.  相似文献

The activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) was examined in three marine microalgae: the chlorophyte t Dunaliella tertiolecta and the chromophytes t Pavlova lutheri and t Thalassiosira pseudonana. The three species differed in the sensitivity of Rubisco activity in crude extracts to magnesium ion concentration, the presence of protease inhibitors, the duration of the incubation on activity, and the potential for full activation of Rubisco with 20 mM magnesium chloride and 20 mM bicarbonate t in vitro. t D. tertiolecta had responses that were similar to those described in vascular plants: regulation of initial activity on a gradient of irradiances; maximum initial activities that were 80– 90% of light-saturated photosynthesis; total activities that exceeded light-saturated photosynthesis by 30–100%; and deactivation of Rubisco in darkness. Both initial and total activity declined in darkness and increased on a return to growth irradiance. First-order time constants were about 9 min for deactivation and 3 min for reactivation of initial activity. The decline in total activity after a transition into darkness could not be reversed t in vitro but could be reversed by exposing t D. tertiolecta to light, a characteristic of regulation by CA1P. The responses of t T. pseudonana were qualitatively similar, except that recovery of initial activity was low and could only account for 30–40% of light-saturated photosynthesis. Rubisco from t T. pseudonana exposed to low irradiance could be activated t in vitro but at growth irradiance and higher, total activity was lower than initial activity. The time constants for deactivation and reactivation of initial activity after reciprocal switches between growth irradiance and darkness were 12–18 min and 3 min in t T. pseudonana. t P. lutheri showed no regulation of Rubisco activity in response to changes in irradiance or light-dark transitions. This may have been an artifact of the conditions chosen to measure activity.  相似文献

Summary Bleeding from phloem of cut distal tips of attached fruits was demonstrated in the genera Spartium, Genista, Lupinus and Jacksonia. Bleeding occurred over a 2–25 min period enabling 0.5–10 l of sap to be collected from a fruit. A detailed study of Lupinus albus L. showed that exudation rate declined exponentially after cutting, but without any change with time in solute levels in exudate. Bleeding resumed at its initial rate and solute concentration on recutting the fruit tip.Phloem exudates had a high pH (7.8-8.0), a sucrose content of 100–210 mg ml-1 but only traces of monosaccharides. Surrounding pod tissues contained only 15–35 mg ml-1 of sugars (tissue water basis) more than two thirds of this monosaccharide. Amino compounds were present in phloem exudates at 8–28 mg ml-1, asparagine and glutamine predominating but a wide spectrum of other amino acids being also present. No significant differences in levels of organic solutes were observed in phloem exudates collected from tips of attached versus detached fruits, from phloem exudates collected from fruit tips versus pedicels, or from basal versus distal ends of a detached fruit.Potassium was the major cation (1.5–2.2 mg ml-1) of the phloem exudate, Ca2+ was at a much lower level than either Mg2+ or Na+. Trace element levels in phloem exudates appeared to be influenced by availability to the plant from the rooting medium. Nitrate was absent though detectable in non-vascular tissues of the shoot. 14C- labelled assimilates were detected in exudates of L. albus one hour after feeding a source leaf 14CO2; sucrose, organic acids and certain amino compounds achieved high specific labelling. 14CO2 feeding studies coupled with the phloem bleeding technique revealed highly specific source-sink relationships between foliar organs and fruits of the primary inflorescence.  相似文献
