Glutathione (GSH; γ-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine) is a small intracellular thiol molecule which is considered as a strong non-enzymatic antioxidant. Glutathione regulates multiple metabolic functions; for example, it protects membranes by maintaining the reduced state of both α-tocopherol and zeaxanthin, it prevents the oxidative denaturation of proteins under stress conditions by protecting their thiol groups, and it serves as a substrate for both glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. By acting as a precursor of phytochelatins, GSH helps in the chelating of toxic metals/metalloids which are then transported and sequestered in the vacuole. The glyoxalase pathway (consisting of glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II enzymes) for detoxification of methylglyoxal, a cytotoxic molecule, also requires GSH in the first reaction step. For these reasons, much attention has recently been directed to elucidation of the role of this molecule in conferring tolerance to abiotic stress. Recently, this molecule has drawn much attention because of its interaction with other signaling molecules and phytohormones. In this review, we have discussed the recent progress in GSH biosynthesis, metabolism and its role in abiotic stress tolerance.  相似文献

The present study describes the length–weight (LWR) of three fish species, Chela cachius (Hamilton, 1822), Coilia ramcarati (Hamilton, 1822) and Sardinella gibbosa (Bleeker, 1849) captured in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, from December 2014 to November 2015. Fishes were captured with either gill nets (mesh size 2.0–5.0 cm) or set bag nets (mesh size 2.0–4.0 cm). The b values in the study varied from 2.88 (C. ramcarati) to 3.00 (S. gibbosa), with a mean a value of 2.94 at < .001 for all three species. In addition, the study provides initial information on LWRs for C. cachius and C. ramcarati and maximum length records for C. cachius and S. gibbosa.  相似文献

Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a seasonal disease in Bangladesh that coincides with the date palm sap collection season. Raw date palm sap is a delicacy to drink in Bengali culture. If fruit bats that are infected with NiV gain access to the sap for drinking, they might occasionally contaminate the sap through saliva and urine. In February 2007, we conducted a qualitative study in six villages, interviewing 27 date palm sap collectors (gachhis) within the geographical area where NiV outbreaks have occurred since 2001. Gachhis reported that bats pose a challenge to successful collection of quality sap, because bats drink and defecate into the sap which markedly reduces its value. They know some methods to prevent access by bats and other pests but do not use them consistently, because of lack of time and resources. Further studies to explore the effectiveness of these methods and to motivate gachhis to invest their time and money to use them could reduce the risk of human Nipah infection in Bangladesh.  相似文献

Published data supports the neuroprotective effects of several phenolic-containing natural products, including certain fruit, berries, spices, nuts, green tea, and olive oil. However, limited data are available for phenolic-containing plant-derived natural sweeteners including maple syrup. Herein, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of a chemically standardized phenolic-enriched maple syrup extract (MSX) using a combination of biophysical, in vitro, and in vivo studies. Based on biophysical data (Thioflavin T assay, transmission electron microscopy, circular dichroism, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential), MSX reduced amyloid β1?42 peptide (Aβ1?42) fibrillation in a concentration-dependent manner (50–500 μg/mL) with similar effects as the neuroprotective polyphenol, resveratrol, at its highest test concentration (63.5?% at 500 μg/mL vs. 77.3?% at 50 μg/mL, respectively). MSX (100 μg/mL) decreased H2O2-induced oxidative stress (16.1?% decrease in ROS levels compared to control), and down-regulated the production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated inflammatory markers (22.1, 19.9, 74.8, and 87.6?% decrease in NOS, IL-6, PGE2, and TNFα levels, respectively, compared to control) in murine BV-2 microglial cells. Moreover, in a non-contact co-culture cell model, differentiated human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells were exposed to conditioned media from BV-2 cells treated with MSX (100 μg/mL) and LPS or LPS alone. MSX-BV-2 media increased SH-SY5Y cell viability by 13.8?% compared to media collected from LPS-BV-2 treated cells. Also, MSX (10 μg/mL) showed protective effects against Aβ1?42 induced neurotoxicity and paralysis in Caenorhabditis elegans in vivo. These data support the potential neuroprotective effects of MSX warranting further studies on this natural product.  相似文献

The present study estimated the length–weight relationship (LWR) and length‐length relationships (LLR) of four fish species, Ompok pabo (Hamilton, 1822), Acentrogobius cyanomos (Bleeker, 1849), Acentrogobius caninus (Valenciennes, 1837) and Gagata cenia (Hamilton, 1822) collected from the Payra river over a period of 1 year between July 2015–June 2016 using set bag nets and cast nets with a mesh size of 0.5 cm and <0.5 cm, respectively. Altogether 593 individuals of O. pabo (59), A. cyanomos (221), A. caninus (240) and G. cenia (73) were sampled and studied. LWRs of O. pabo, A. cyanomos, and A. caninus are presented for the first time in Fishbase.  相似文献

Poly C binding protein 1 (PCBP1) is an expressional regulator of the mu‐opioid receptor (MOR) gene. We hypothesized the existence of a PCBP1 co‐regulator modifying human MOR gene expression by protein–protein interaction with PCBP1. A human brain cDNA library was screened using the two‐hybrid system with PCBP1 as the bait. Receptor for activated protein kinase C (RACK1) protein, containing seven WD domains, was identified. PCBP1‐RACK1 interaction was confirmed via in vivo validation using the two‐hybrid system, and by co‐immunoprecipitation with anti‐PCBP1 antibody and human neuronal NMB cell lysate, endogenously expressing PCBP1 and RACK1. Further co‐immunoprecipitation suggested that RACK1‐PCBP1 interaction occurred in cytosol alone. Single and serial WD domain deletion analyses demonstrated that WD7 of RACK1 is the key domain interacting with PCBP1. RACK1 over‐expression resulted in a dose‐dependent decrease of MOR promoter activity using p357 plasmid containing human MOR promoter and luciferase reporter gene. Knock‐down analysis showed that RACK1 siRNA decreased the endogenous RACK1 mRNA level in NMB, and elevated MOR mRNA level as indicated by RT‐PCR. Likewise, a decrease of RACK1 resulted in an increase of MOR proteins, verified by 3H‐diprenorphine binding assay. Collectively, this study reports a novel role of RACK1, physically interacting with PCBP1 and participating in the regulation of human MOR gene expression in neuronal NMB cells.  相似文献
