Treatment of burns casualties after fire at Bradford City football ground.

On 11 May 1985 the main stand of Bradford City Football Club caught fire. Within four minutes the stand was alight from end to end. Fifty three people were burnt to death and about 250 injured; 83 required admission to hospital, and 55 of these were treated by primary excision of their burns and skin grafting. In such disasters the help of staff from other hospitals and areas is essential. Patients should be assessed to see whether they have burns that will ultimately be fatal; if they have they should not be sent to regional burns units, where they would take up beds that could be used for patients with treatable burns. All districts should ensure that their plans for accidents in which burns injuries predominate are adequate.     

Correlation of 19F-NMR spectra of halothane in rat tumor and non-tumor tissues with membrane alterations

The membrane environments in normal and tumor rat tissue and the effect of hyperthermia thereon are studied with 19F-NMR spectroscopy of the general anesthetic halothane. Normal and tumor cell types are clearly differentiated by the halothane resonance. A hydrophobic environment prominent in tumor tissue is more sensitive to heat treatment than the corresponding environments of normal cells. Studies of extracted lipids suggest that this may be due in part to the considerable difference in lipid temperature response which exists between normal and kidney tumor cells.     

Cellular interactions between 3T3 cells and interleukin-3-dependent multipotent haemopoietic cells: a model system for stromal-cell-mediated haemopoiesis

With the aid of a multipotent stem cell line (FDCP-mix cells) co-cultured with either normal or irradiated Swiss 3T3, cellular interactions between stromal cells and haemopoietic stem cells were studied by electron microscopy and time-lapse video microscopy. When cultured in the presence of interleukin 3 (IL-3) but in the absence of stromal cells, the FDCP-mix cells have a characteristic blast morphology. In the absence of IL-3, the cells die unless they are co-cultured with marrow stromal cells or 3T3 cells. In the latter case, they attach, proliferate, and differentiate on both normal and irradiated Swiss 3T3 cell layers without the addition of extrinsic growth factor (IL-3). At the initial attachment sites of these two cell lines, cellular recognition seemed to be mediated by the formation of microvillus cytoplasmic projections and extracellular matrix. These areas may well be the sites of plasma-membrane-bound signalling/adhesional molecules between the interacting cells.     

Isolation of a flax (Linum usitatissimum) gene induced during susceptible infection by flax rust (Melampsora lini)

In a susceptible infection of flax ( Linum usitatissimum ), the obligate rust pathogen ( Melampsora lini ) can grow in the leaf without triggering the hypersensitive resistance response. The rust establishes specialized structures (haustoria) in plant mesophyll cells and induces changes in plant subcellular organization. Subtraction hybridization methods were used to isolate cDNA clones of mRNAs that have altered expression in infected leaves. Most of the cDNAs recovered were of fungal origin, but one clone, pFIS1 ( f lax i nducible s equence No. 1), recovered from several independent experiments, was a plant-specified mRNA that showed a 10-fold increase in steady-state levels during susceptible growth. The increase in fis1 mRNA levels was not seen in the resistant reaction (hypersensitive reaction) and the predicted protein sequence (551 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 61 kDa) has no similarity to known pathogenesis-related proteins. Searches of sequence data bases showed that fis1 encodes a protein which contains amino acid sequence motifs that are conserved in all previously characterized aldehyde dehydrogenases.     

Estimating woody and herbaceous vegetation cover from time series satellite observations

In this paper we test a method to estimate the tree and grass vegetation cover over Australia from satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series (monthly 1981–91, ≈5 km pixels) observations. The evergreen cover is assumed to track along the base of the NDVI time series, which is assumed to be equivalent to the woody vegetation cover. The base of the NDVI time series is estimated using modifications to a classical econometric model (i.e. time series is the sum of trend, seasonal and random components). Estimates of the average evergreen component during 1982–85 and 1986–89 were generally consistent with known vegetation distributions. Changes in evergreen cover were largely restricted to the south-west and south-east of Australia. Those changes were largely the result of differences in rainfall between the two periods. The proposed method for estimating woody vegetation cover is found to be generally robust. However, there are some regions where the grass (or pasture) is mostly evergreen. Some possible refinements are proposed to handle such cases.     

The response of murine intestinal crypts to short-range promethium-147 beta irradiation: deductions concerning clonogenic cell numbers and positions

An exteriorized loop of mouse intestine was exposed to 147Pm low-energy electrons, where the dose rate decreased by a factor of 5 from the base of the crypt to the top of the proliferative zone. A crypt survival curve was obtained, expressed in terms of exposure time. The shape of the curve was interpreted in terms of survival parameters for colony-forming cells (clonogens) derived using 137Cs gamma rays and the depth-dose curve measured for 147Pm electrons. It is concluded that the shape of the crypt survival curve using 147Pm electrons is inconsistent with the notion of either the presence of a large number of clonogens or a small number near the top of the proliferative zone. A computer fitting procedure showed that the best agreement between predicted and observed curves was achieved with 2.7 +/- 0.5 clonogens at cell position 5.6 +/- 0.6, in the putative stem-cell zone.
