Age-related changes in body weight,scrotal size and plasma testosterone levels in buffalo bulls (Bubalus bubalis)

Body weight, testicle size and peripheral testosterone concentrations were measured in 35 water buffalo bulls at 5, 15, 17, 21, 25 and 38 months of age. These parameters were studied in all animals during the same month (October), so the changes due to age were independent of changes in photoperiod and temperature. Body weight increased linearly with age. The testicular size measured in terms of scrotal circumference as related to age, showed a curvilinear increase; the average rate of testicular growth was maximum between 15 and 25 months. Plasma testosterone levels were low between 5 and 21 months. A significant rise in plasma concentration of testosterone was observed at 25 months reaching peak levels at 38 months. The mean age of sexually mature bulls at the time of first ejaculation of semen with motile sperm, was 24.9±0.9 months (n=9). It has been concluded that in the Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls the sexually quiescent period (prepubertal) extends up to 15 months of age and sexual maturation as indicated by the presence of motile sperm in the ejaculate is attained at about 25 months.     

Effect of soil acidity and saturating cation on adsorption of urea in soil

Summary Elevating the pH of two extremely acid tropical soils from an initial pH of 4 to 5 with Ca(OH)₂ and NaOH solutions resulted in a sharp decrease in urea adsorption. Further increases in pH to 9 caused only slight further decrease in urea adsorption. Ca treatment resulted in slightly higher adsorption than Na treatment over the full range of pH values studied for a clay soil with high smectite content, and for a loam with kaolinite mineralogy below pH 7. Above pH 7 a kaolinitic loamy soil gave slightly higher adsorption with Na treatment than with Ca.     

Note on breeding the argentine stem weevilHyperodes bonariensis [Col.: Curculionidae] and its egg parasitePatasson atomarius [Hym.: Mymaridae]

Hyperodes bonariensis Kuschel underwent ovarial diapause from March to August in the Bariloche area in Argentina. Feeding on germinating seedlings ofTriticum aestivum L. andPoa annua L. in continuous dark induced the weevil for oviposition in 24 and 32 days, respectively. Breeding techniques are described forH. bonariensis and its parasitePatasson atomarius (Brethes).     

Protection against acute paraquat toxicity by ambroxol

An expression vector for G-CSF, pASLB3-3, was constructed and introduced into Namalwa KJM-1 cells (Hosoi et al., 1988), and cells resistant to 100 nM of methotrexate (MTX) were obtained. Among them, the highest producer, clone SC57, was selected and the productivity of this clone was further characterized. The maximal production of G-CSF was at the most 1.8 g/ml/day using a 25 cm² tissue culture flask, even though the cell number was above 7×10⁵ cells/ml. The limiting factors at high density were analyzed as the deficiency of nutrients, such as glucose, cysteine and serine, and pH control. The depression of specific G-CSF productivity per cell under the batch culture conditions was overcome by using a perfusion culture system, Biofermenter^TM (Sato, 1983) with modifications of nutrients supplementation by a dialysis membrane and/or dissolved oxygen (DO) supplementation by microsilicone fibers. ITPSGF medium was modified to elevate concentrations of amino acids and glucose by 2.0- and 2.5-times, respectively. Under the control of pH at 7.4 and DO at 3 ppm, the specific G-CSF productivity was not depressed even at high cell density (above 1×10⁷ cells/ml), and the amount of G-CSF reached 41 g/ml. Immunofluorescent localization of acetyl CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthetase and pyruvate carboxylase during the adipocyte conversion of 3T3 fibroblasts

Three enzymes involved in the conversion of 3T3-L2 fibroblasts into fat cells, acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC), fatty acid synthetase (FAS) and pyruvate carboxylase (PC) have been localized by immunofluorescence techniques. The method enables the identification of cells undergoing the conversion while they are still fibroblastic in appearance, often before the obvious appearance of fat droplets. Specific fluorescence for each enzyme can be seen in "clones" of cells derived from single cells, which may undergo an event during logarithmic growth, which programs the cells to differentiate subsequent to confluence of and addition of induction medium.     

Analysis of tadpole growth following gamma-ray irradiation

This investigation reports observations on the growth of Rana cyanophlyctis tadpoles following a whole body gamma-ray exposure. The effect on the body and hind limb size is perhaps the most significant of the period of latency. A dose of 2,000 R serves as a stressor and activates ACTH secretion in the tadpoles. The resultant somatotrophic hormone (STH) inhibition and subsequent recovery during the following days seem an integral part of the radiation syndrome.     

Influence of clay minerals on sorption of bacteriolytic enzymes

Myxobacteria presumably produce extracellular bacteriolytic enzymes when they are growing in soil. In order to study their ecological significance, adsorption experiments were performed with lytic enzymes produced byMyxococcus virescens in casitone media. Different soils as well as montmorillonite and kaolinite can rapidly adsorb the bacteriolytic but not the proteolytic enzymes. About 1 gm of montmorillonite per liter of cell-free culture solution is enough for the adsorption of 97% of the bacteriolytic enzymes. The adsorption per unit weight is about 100 times greater on montmorillonite than on kaolinite. About 40% of the adsorbed enzymes can be eluted with solutions of high pH or high ionic strength. The only desorbed bacteriolytic enzyme is the alanyl-∈-N-lysine endopeptidase.
