In view of the upcoming road network improvement and expansion in Ethiopia, specifically in Tigray, it is also necessary to understand the potential impacts of road accidents with wildlife vertebrate animals. Road mortality detection surveys were conducted from March 2013 to June 2014. We surveyed around 530 km using vehicle with special emphasis given to roads surrounded by wetlands, forests, rocky areas and rivers each month. Additional information was also collected using a standardized questionnaire. A total of twenty species, 143 individuals of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals were recorded as road vehicular accidents in the surveyed area. Of all, mammals showed the highest species richness (80 individuals belonging to ten species) followed by birds (49 individuals belonging to eight species). The survey revealed most accidents happened during the early morning and late evening. This might be due to relatively high traffic and continued activity of wild animals at that time, besides the driver's inability to avoid accidents when it is dark. Wildlife underpasses during road construction, location of crossing structures, rules of wildlife conservation, improving driver's awareness are relevant in this context and may be the most important mitigation measures to reduce mortality of wildlife on the roads.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine ethnic differences in the metabolic responses to a 16-week intervention designed to improve insulin sensitivity (SI), adiposity, and inflammation in obese African-American and Latino adolescents. A total of 100 participants (African Americans: n = 48, Latino: n = 52; age: 15.4 ± 1.1 years, BMI percentile: 97.3 ± 3.3) were randomly assigned to interventions: control (C; n = 30), nutrition (N; n = 39, 1×/week focused on decreasing sugar and increasing fiber intake), or nutrition + strength training (N+ST; n = 31, 2×/week). The following were measured at pre- and postintervention: strength, dietary intake, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry/magnetic resonance imaging) and glucose/insulin indexes (oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)/intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT)) and inflammatory markers. Overall, N compared to C and N+ST reported significant improvements in SI (+16.5% vs. -32.3% vs. -6.9% respectively, P < 0.01) and disposition index (DI: +15.5% vs. -14.2% vs. -13.7% respectively, P < 0.01). N+ST compared to C and N reported significant reductions in hepatic fat fraction (HFF: -27.3% vs. -4.3% vs. 0% respectively, P < 0.01). Compared to N, N+ST reported reductions in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) (-38.3% vs. +1.0%, P < 0.01) and resistin (-18.7% vs. +11.3%, P = 0.02). There were no intervention effects for all other measures of adiposity or inflammation. Significant intervention by ethnicity interactions were found for African Americans in the N group who reported increases in total fat mass, 2-h glucose and glucose incremental areas under the curve (IAUC) compared to Latinos (P's < 0.05). These interventions yielded differential effects with N reporting favorable improvements in SI and DI and N+ST reporting marked reductions in HFF and inflammation. Both ethnic groups had significant improvements in metabolic health; however some improvements were not seen in African Americans.  相似文献

As part of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, a controlled clinical trial known as the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) was conducted to assess the effectiveness of tamoxifen as a preventive agent for breast cancer. In addition to the incidence of breast cancer, data were collected on several other, possibly adverse, outcomes, such as invasive endometrial cancer, ischemic heart disease, transient ischemic attack, deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. In this article, we present results from an illustrative analysis of the BCPT data, based on a new modeling technique, to assess the effectiveness of the drug tamoxifen as a preventive agent for breast cancer. We extended the flexible model of Gray (1994, Spline-based test in survival analysis, Biometrics 50, 640-652) to allow inference on multiple time-to-event outcomes in the style of the marginal modeling setup of Wei, Lin, and Weissfeld (1989, Regression analysis of multivariate incomplete failure time data by modeling marginal distributions, Journal of the American Statistical Association 84, 1065-1073). This proposed model makes inference possible for multiple time-to-event data while allowing for greater flexibility in modeling the effects of prognostic factors with nonlinear exposure-response relationships. Results from simulation studies on the small-sample properties of the asymptotic tests will also be presented.  相似文献

The fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a biomarker of airway inflammation that is being increasingly considered in clinical, occupational, and epidemiological applications ranging from asthma management to the detection of air pollution health effects. FeNO depends strongly on exhalation flow rate. This dependency has allowed for the development of mathematical models whose parameters quantify airway and alveolar compartment contributions to FeNO. Numerous methods have been proposed to estimate these parameters using FeNO measured at multiple flow rates. These methods—which allow for non-invasive assessment of localized airway inflammation—have the potential to provide important insights on inflammatory mechanisms. However, different estimation methods produce different results and a serious barrier to progress in this field is the lack of a single recommended method. With the goal of resolving this methodological problem, we have developed a unifying framework in which to present a comprehensive set of existing and novel statistical methods for estimating parameters in the simple two-compartment model. We compared statistical properties of the estimators in simulation studies and investigated model fit and parameter estimate sensitivity across methods using data from 1507 schoolchildren from the Southern California Children''s Health Study, one of the largest multiple flow FeNO studies to date. We recommend a novel nonlinear least squares model with natural log transformation on both sides that produced estimators with good properties, satisfied model assumptions, and fit the Children''s Health Study data well.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were: (a) to quantify the influence of passive ankle and knee joint angular displacement on the estimated mechanical and architectural properties of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle-tendon unit, and (b) to determine the strain distribution of separate structures (tendon, aponeurosis and fascicle) during passive lengthening of the GM muscle-tendon unit at rest. Ten male subjects participated in the study. The passive ankle and knee joint movements were performed on an isokinetic dynamometer. The kinematics of the left leg were recorded using the Vicon 624 system with 8 cameras. Two ultrasound probes were used to examine the elongation of the tendon, the aponeurosis, the fascicles and the angle of pennation of the GM. To calculate the elongation of the GM muscle-tendon unit the Achilles tendon path was reconstructed using a series of small reflective markers. The results show that the passive ankle joint angular displacement has a considerable influence on the elongation of the tendinous and architectural structures of the GM muscle-tendon unit. In contrast, the influence of knee joint angular displacement on the GM fascicle length and pennation angle becomes relevant only at knee angles greater than 144 degrees . The contribution of the tendon to the elongation of the GM muscle-tendon unit at rest is relevant because of its greater resting length in comparison to the resting length of the GM fascicles. The results indicate the existence of slackness in the inactive GM muscle-tendon unit between 121 degrees and 107 degrees ankle angle and between 65 degrees and 144 degrees knee angle.  相似文献

Exposure to ambient air pollutants increases risk for adverse cardiovascular health outcomes in adults. We aimed to evaluate the contribution of prenatal air pollutant exposure to cardiovascular health, which has not been thoroughly evaluated. The Testing Responses on Youth (TROY) study consists of 768 college students recruited from the University of Southern California in 2007–2009. Participants attended one study visit during which blood pressure, heart rate and carotid artery arterial stiffness (CAS) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) were assessed. Prenatal residential addresses were geocoded and used to assign prenatal and postnatal air pollutant exposure estimates using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality System (AQS) database. The associations between CAS, CIMT and air pollutants were assessed using linear regression analysis. Prenatal PM10 and PM2.5 exposures were associated with increased CAS. For example, a 2 SD increase in prenatal PM2.5 was associated with CAS indices, including a 5% increase (β = 1.05, 95% CI 1.00–1.10) in carotid stiffness index beta, a 5% increase (β = 1.05, 95% CI 1.01–1.10) in Young’s elastic modulus and a 5% decrease (β = 0.95, 95% CI 0.91–0.99) in distensibility. Mutually adjusted models of pre- and postnatal PM2.5 further suggested the prenatal exposure was most relevant exposure period for CAS. No associations were observed for CIMT. In conclusion, prenatal exposure to elevated air pollutants may increase carotid arterial stiffness in a young adult population of college students. Efforts aimed at limiting prenatal exposures are important public health goals.  相似文献

Testicular development in the captive male dojo loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was examined monthly in relation to the levels of plasma sex steroids [testosterone (T), 11-ketotestostrone (11-KT), and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP)]. On the basis of testicular histology, the annual gonadal cycle was found to be divisible into 3 periods: the recovery and proliferation period, which mainly consists of early spermatogenic testis from August to November (reproductive phase I); the preparation period for the next spawning period, which mainly consists of late spermatogenic testis from December to April (reproductive phase II); and the mature period, characterized by a high proportion of mature testis from May to July (reproductive phase III). Individual variability in testicular development was high, and continuous spermatogenesis was observed throughout the year. High levels of plasma T, 11-KT, and DHP were observed during reproductive phase III. 11-KT began to increase in February, while T was present at low levels in reproductive phase II. These results suggest that the physiologically active season of testis development for breeding in the dojo loach is from May to July, although spermatogenesis occurs throughout the year.  相似文献

The current study aimed to examine the effect of anterior cruciate ligament deficiency (ACLd) on joint kinetics and dynamic stability control after a single leg hop test (SLHT). Twelve unilateral ACLd patients and a control subject group (n=13) performed a SLHT over a given distance with both legs. The calculation of joint kinetics was done by means of a soft-tissue artifact optimized rigid full-body model. Margin of stability (MoS) was quantified by the difference between the base of support and the extrapolated center of mass. During landing, the ACLd leg showed lower external knee flexion moments but demonstrated higher moments at the ankle and hip compared to controls (p<0.05). The main reason for the joint moment redistribution in the ACLd leg was a more anterior position of the ground reaction force (GRF) vector, which affected the moment arms of the GRF acting about the joints (p<0.05). For the ACLd leg, trunk angle was more flexed over the entire landing phase compared to controls (p<0.05) and we found a significant correlation between moment arms at the knee joint and trunk angle (r2 = 0.48;p<0.01). The consequence of this altered landing strategy in ACLd legs was a more anterior position of the center of mass reducing the MoS (p<0.05). The results illustrate the interaction between trunk angle, joint kinetics and dynamic stability during landing maneuvers and provide evidence of a feedforward adaptive adjustment in ACLd patients (i.e. more flexed trunk angle) aimed at reducing knee joint moments at the cost of dynamic stability control.  相似文献

Preserving upright stance requires central integration of the sensory systems and appropriate motor output from the neuromuscular system to keep the centre of pressure (COP) within the base of support. Unilateral peripheral vestibular disorder (UPVD) causes diminished stance stability. The aim of this study was to determine the limits of stability and to examine the contribution of multiple sensory systems to upright standing in UPVD patients and healthy subjects. We hypothesized that closure of the eyes and Achilles tendon vibration during upright stance will augment the postural sway in UPVD patients more than in healthy subjects. Seventeen UPVD patients and 17 healthy subjects performed six tasks on a force plate: forwards and backwards leaning, to determine limits of stability, and upright standing with and without Achilles tendon vibration, each with eyes open and closed (with blackout glasses). The COP displacement of the patients was significantly greater in the vibration tasks than the controls and came closer to the posterior base of support boundary than the controls in all tasks. Achilles tendon vibration led to a distinctly more backward sway in both subject groups. Five of the patients could not complete the eyes closed with vibration task. Due to the greater reduction in stance stability when the proprioceptive, compared with the visual, sensory system was disturbed, we suggest that proprioception may be more important for maintaining upright stance than vision. UPVD patients, in particular, showed more difficulty in controlling postural stability in the posterior direction with visual and proprioceptive sensory disturbance.  相似文献
