Medicinal plants have significant contribution in pharmaceutical industries being producers of compounds utilized as precursors for drug development. A plant of Lamiaceae family; Pseudocaryopteris foetida had not been investigated for its biomedical potential. Current research was aimed to investigate phytochemical analysis, cytotoxic potential and antioxidant activity of crude methanolic extract and fractions of Pseudocaryopteris foetida (leaves). The preliminary phytochemical analysis of crude methanolic extracts and fractions of Pseudocaryopteris foetida revealed that plant is rich in phenolic and flavonoid classes of secondary metabolites while presence of tannin was observed only in crude methanolic extract. The cytotoxicity was determined using brine shrimp lethality test. Different concentrations (25, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 µg/mL) of crude methanolic extract and fractions exhibited dose dependent cytotoxicity. However, The LD50 for all the extracts was more than 200 µg/mL indicating weak cytotoxic potential of Pseudocaryopteris foetida. The antioxidant capabilities of crude methanolic extract and fraction of Pseudocaryopteris foetida were analyzed by in vitro bio assays including DPPH, ABTS, Reducing power and phosphomolybdate antioxidant assays using ascorbic acid as standard. The crude methanolic extract showed IC50 (256.38 ± 0.6 and 314.95 ± 1.1 µg/mL) for DPPH and ABTS respectively, while total antioxidant capacity was calculated as 55.79 ± 0.5 µg/mL for crude methanolic extract of Pseudocaryopteris foetida while ascorbic acid indicated total antioxidant capacity of 71.89 ± 2.3 µg/mL. Study concluded that leaves of Pseudocaryopteris foetida were the rich source of antioxidant phytochemicals. Based on preliminary investigations further research should be focused to isolate bioactive phytochemicals as leading source of clinical medicines in future.  相似文献

The emergence of multidrug resistance in pathogenic bacteria limits the utilization of available antibiotics. The development of alternate options to treat infectious diseases is the need of the day.The present study was aimed to synthesize, characterize and evaluate the bioactive properties of silver nanoparticles. Endophytic bacterium Bacillus cereus (MT193718) isolated from Berberis lycium was used to synthesize biocompatible silver nanoparticles. Antibacterial properties of AgNPs were evaluated against clinically isolated multidrug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. AgNPs indicated significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus and K. pneumoniae fwith a zone of inhibition of 17 and 18 mm at a concentration of 1000 µg/ mL with minimum inhibitory concentration of 15.6 and 62.5 µg/mL respectively. Significant antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 9.5 µg/mL was recorded. Biosynthesized AgNPs were found compatible with red blood cells at a concentration of 31.5 µg/ml with no clumping of erythrocytes. The study suggested that AgNPs synthesized by the endophytic bacterium Bacillus cereus are biologically active and can be used as antioxidant and antibacterial agents against drug-resistant bacteria.  相似文献

Nematodes are the most diverse and highly significant group of soil-inhabiting microorganisms that play a vital role in organic material decomposition and nutrient recycling.Diverse geographical locations and environmental gradients show a significant impact on the diversity of nematodes. Present study aims to assess the effects of ecological (altitude, temperature, moisture) and edaphic (soil pH, nutrients, soil patches) factors on the soil nematode diversity and structure at five different landscape patches (forests, apple orchards, rice fields, pastures, and alpine zone) from ten different sites of Kashmir valley (India). Differences in the altitudinal gradients results in the shift of generic nematode population. Among the soil patches, highest nematode diversity was observed in forest soil and least in alpine soil; however, bacteriovorous nematodes dominated all the soil patches. The temperature and moisture have a significant effect on nematode diversity, the highest nematode trophic levels were observed above 21°C temperature, and 30% moisture. Nematode abundance decreased from alkaline to acidic pH of the soil. Soil nutrients such as, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have shown a detrimental effect in nematode richness at each site, where nematode diversity and richness of genera were higher at abundant soil N and P but decreased at low soil nutrients. Ecological indices like diversity index (DI), Shannon-Wiener Index (H'), enrichment index (EI), and maturity Index (MI) values demonstrated forest soil more favourable for nematodes and high soil health status than other soil patches. This study suggested that these indices may be helpful as soil monitoring tools and assessing ecosystem sustainability and biodiversity.  相似文献

The newly synthesized benzimidazole compounds were suggested to be inhibitors of Plasmodium falciparum plasmepsin II and human cathepsin D by virtual screening of an internal library of synthetic compounds. This was confirmed by enzyme inhibition studies that gave IC(50) values in the low micromolar range (2-48μM). Ligand docking studies with plasmepsin II predicted binding of benzimidazole compounds at the center of the extended substrate-binding cleft. According to the plausible mode of binding, the pyridine ring of benzimidazole compounds interacted with S1' subsite residues whereas the acetophenone moiety was in contact with S1-S3 subsites of plasmepsin II active center. The benzimidazole derivatives were evaluated for capacity to inhibit the growth of intraerythrocytic P. falciparum in culture. Four benzimidazole compounds inhibited parasite growth at ?3μM. The most active compound 10, 1-(4-phenylphenyl)-2[2-(pyridinyl-2-yl)-1,3-benzdiazol-1-yl]ethanone showed an IC(50) of 160nM. The substitution of a phenyl group and a chlorine atom at the para position of the acetophenone moiety were shown to be crucial for antiplasmodial activity.  相似文献

In this study, the yeast strains were isolated from grapes by serial dilution technique to determine their alcohol-, sugar- and thermotolerance. 34 wild type yeast strains were isolated and alcohol-, sugar- and thermotolerance of these strains were determined. The maximum alcohol tolerance was found to be 9% (v/v) in yeast strain which is named Y2. Thermotolerance behavior of 6 strains were investigated. The strains were treated with UV light with intervals of 20, 30, 40 and 50 seconds. Selected resistant colonies were investigated for alcohol tolerance. It was found that alcohol tolerance increased from 9% (v/v) to 12% (v/v) on Y2 strain.  相似文献
