  1. We contrast the response of arthropod abundance and composition to bison grazing lawns during a drought and non‐drought year, with an emphasis on acridid grasshoppers, an important grassland herbivore.
  2. Grazing lawns are grassland areas where regular grazing by mammalian herbivores creates patches of short‐statured, high nutrient vegetation. Grazing lawns are predictable microsites that modify microclimate, plant structure, community composition, and nutrient availability, with likely repercussions for arthropod communities.
  3. One year of our study occurred during an extreme drought. Drought mimics some of the effects of mammalian grazers: decreasing above‐ground plant biomass while increasing plant foliar percentage nitrogen.
  4. We sampled arthropods and nutrient availability on and nearby (“off”) 10 bison‐grazed grazing lawns in a tallgrass prairie in NE Kansas. Total grasshopper abundance was higher on grazing lawns and the magnitude of this difference increased in the wetter year of 2019 compared to 2018, when drought led to high grass foliar nitrogen concentrations on and off grazing lawns. Mixed‐feeding grasshopper abundances were consistently higher on grazing lawns while grass‐feeder and forb‐feeder abundances were higher on lawns only in 2019, the wetter year. In contrast, the abundance of other arthropods (e.g., Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, and Araneae) did not differ on and off lawns, but increased overall in 2019, relative to the drought of 2018.
  5. Understanding these local scale patterns of abundances and community composition improves predictability of arthropod responses to ongoing habitat change.

The transformation of ancestral phenotypes into novel traits is poorly understood for many examples of evolutionary novelty. Ancestrally, salamanders have a biphasic life cycle with an aquatic larval stage, a brief and pronounced metamorphosis, followed by a terrestrial adult stage. Repeatedly during evolution, metamorphic timing has been delayed to exploit growth-permissive environments, resulting in paedomorphic salamanders that retain larval traits as adults. We used thyroid hormone (TH) to rescue metamorphic phenotypes in paedomorphic salamanders and then identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) for life history traits that are associated with amphibian life cycle evolution: metamorphic timing and adult body size. We demonstrate that paedomorphic tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum complex) carry alleles at three moderate effect QTL (met1–3) that vary in responsiveness to TH and additively affect metamorphic timing. Salamanders that delay metamorphosis attain significantly larger body sizes as adults and met2 explains a significant portion of this variation. Thus, substitution of alleles at TH-responsive loci suggests an adaptive pleiotropic basis for two key life-history traits in amphibians: body size and metamorphic timing. Our study demonstrates a likely pathway for the evolution of novel paedomorphic species from metamorphic ancestors via selection of TH-response alleles that delay metamorphic timing and increase adult body size.  相似文献

Group size and the distribution and quality of food resources are among the most important determinants of primate ranging behavior. In this study, I use the framework of the ecological constraints model to assess correlates of range size of a free-ranging group of bearded sakis (Chiropotes sagulatus). Bearded sakis are among the widest ranging neotropical primates, yet the lack of data from continuous forest populations has made understanding the factors influencing such large ranges difficult. I collected data on ranging behavior and diet during 44 full-day follows over 15 mo. The focal group used a home range of ca. 1000 ha and had daily path lengths of 2.8–6.5 km (mean?=?4.0 km). Daily path length did not significantly correlate with group size, patch quality, food availability, or the spatial distribution of feeding trees. Monthly home range size significantly positively correlated with group size and patch quality. The focal group had significantly shorter paths when ripe fruit consumption was higher and had more diverse diets, visited more food patches, and used larger monthly home ranges when they consumed a higher percentage of seeds. The results of this study, combined with other recent studies of Chiropotes in continuous forest, suggest that large home ranges (approaching 1000 ha) are characteristic of the genus. Although range size may be related to group size and food patch size, I suggest nutrient mixing and the need to balance the effects of seed secondary compounds as additional explanations for the large ranges of bearded sakis.  相似文献

Microbiome studies are often limited by a lack of statistical power due to small sample sizes and a large number of features. This problem is exacerbated in correlative studies of multi-omic datasets. Statistical power can be increased by finding and summarizing modules of correlated observations, which is one dimensionality reduction method. Additionally, modules provide biological insight as correlated groups of microbes can have relationships among themselves. To address these challenges, we developed SCNIC: Sparse Cooccurrence Network Investigation for compositional data. SCNIC is open-source software that can generate correlation networks and detect and summarize modules of highly correlated features. Modules can be formed using either the Louvain Modularity Maximization (LMM) algorithm or a Shared Minimum Distance algorithm (SMD) that we newly describe here and relate to LMM using simulated data. We applied SCNIC to two published datasets and we achieved increased statistical power and identified microbes that not only differed across groups, but also correlated strongly with each other, suggesting shared environmental drivers or cooperative relationships among them. SCNIC provides an easy way to generate correlation networks, identify modules of correlated features and summarize them for downstream statistical analysis. Although SCNIC was designed considering properties of microbiome data, such as compositionality and sparsity, it can be applied to a variety of data types including metabolomics data and used to integrate multiple data types. SCNIC allows for the identification of functional microbial relationships at scale while increasing statistical power through feature reduction.  相似文献

The federally threatened frosted flatwoods salamander, Ambystoma cingulatum, occurs in isolated populations on the coastal plain of northern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. An earlier phylogeographic study based primarily on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and morphometrics demonstrated that the previously recognized species A. cingulatum contained two cryptic species, and that two distinct mtDNA clades were contained within the newly restricted A. cingulatum. However, salamanders from the northern extent of the species range in South Carolina were not previously available for analysis. Here, we used individuals from a newly discovered South Carolina breeding site to determine whether A. cingulatum from South Carolina are genetically distinct from their more southerly conspecifics. These analyses included the mitochondrial gene studied previously as well as broad geographic sampling of three rapidly evolving nuclear genes that allowed us to further investigate lineage diversification of flatwoods salamanders. The mitochondrial and nuclear results are largely congruent, yielding strong support for two distinct species of flatwoods salamanders and also two lineages within the eastern species. Further, the South Carolina specimens are closely related to other haplotypes found in eastern Georgia and Florida. Our summary of field surveys over the past 20 years indicates that this South Carolina population may be one of only three remaining in the entire Atlantic coastal plain distribution of this rare and declining amphibian species.  相似文献

Behavioural thermoregulation and locomotory activity of green sunfish were examined in a temporal temperature-gradient apparatus. Green sunfish actively avoided temperatures exceeding 30.3 degrees C and below 26.5 degrees C and had a median preferred temperature of 28.2 degrees C. Temperature preference did not vary significantly during the diel period even though locomotory activity patterns were markedly crepuscular. Activity was stimulated by the change in illumination levels at dawn and dusk.  相似文献

The deciduous dentition and tooth replacement pattern of Palaeochiropteryx tupaiodon from the early Middle Eocene of Messel, near Frankfurt, Germany, are described. Ontogenetic states include fetuses to subadults. The posterior portion of the deciduous dentition (dP3-4) still shows the primitive eutherian condition of molarization, while the anterior part (dI-dC) was already engaged in the evolution of the highly derived condition found in living bats for clinging to the mother's fur. A styliform and sharp anterior dentition is considered a prerequisite in earliest chiropteran evolution. The greatly modified milk teeth of all living bats developed in different clades by parallel evolution under high selective pressure. The tiny and, at initial stages, poorly calcified teeth are substantiated by a newly developed microradiographic technique which is described in detail.  相似文献

Feist‐Burkhardt, S. & Pross, J. 2010: Dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy of the Opalinuston Formation (Middle Jurassic) in the Aalenian type area in southwest Germany and north Switzerland. Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 10–31. In order to provide a detailed dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Lower Aalenian Opalinuston Formation from the Aalenian type area, 68 samples from four boreholes and one outcrop section were analysed. The sample localities are Hausen an der Fils and Wittnau in southwest Germany, Weiach in north Switzerland and Mont Russelin in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages were recovered from the Late Toarcian Aalensis Zone to the Late Aalenian Murchisonae Zone. The samples yielded rich, well‐preserved and diverse assemblages with 51 dinoflagellate cyst taxa identified in total. The dinoflagellate cyst distribution data obtained from this study allow a high‐resolution biostratigraphical subdivision of the lowermost Middle Jurassic Opalinuston Formation into four palynostratigraphical units. First and last occurrences, acmes and consistent presence of the species Batiacasphaera sp. A, Evansia cf. granochagrinata, Kallosphaeridium praussii, Nannoceratopsis triangulata, Phallocysta? frommernensis and Wallodinium laganum were selected as the criteria for defining these units. The obtained high‐resolution palynostratigraphical scheme provides a basis for establishing and further refining early Middle Jurassic biostratigraphy in the Boreal and Tethyan realms. □Aalenian, biostratigraphy, dinoflagellate cysts, Germany, Jurassic, Switzerland, Toarcian.  相似文献
