Nature uses a Mn oxide-based catalyst for water oxidation in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Mn oxides are among major candidates to be used as water-oxidizing catalysts. Herein, we used two straightforward and promising methods to form Escherichia coli bacteria/Mn oxide compounds. In one of the methods, the bacteria template was intact after the reaction. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectrometry. Electrochemical properties of the catalysts were studied, and attributed redox potentials were assigned. The water oxidation of the compounds was examined under electrochemical condition. Linear sweep voltammetry showed that the onsets of water oxidation in our experimental condition for bacteria and Escherichia coli bacteria/Mn oxide were 1.68 and 1.56 V versus the normal hydrogen electrode (NHE), respectively. Thus, the presence of Mn oxide in the catalyst significantly decreased (~?120 mV) the overpotential needed for water oxidation.  相似文献

During the functioning period of a sand filter, 254 and 234 faecal-coliform strains were isolated from raw wastewater and reclaimed effluent, respectively. When tested for their susceptibility to ampicillin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline, 53% of the strains from the raw sewage and 84% of those isolated from the effluent were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The high incidence of drug resistance in the effluent was connected with a high proportion of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae and Citrobacter freundii.  相似文献

Antibacterial peptides have potential as novel therapeutic agents for bacterial infections. Aurein 1.2 is one of the smallest antibacterial peptides extracted from an anuran. LLAA is a more active analogue of aurein 1.2. Antibacterial peptides usually accomplish their function by interacting with bacterial membrane selectively. In this study, we tried to find the reasons for the stronger antibacterial activity of LLAA compared with aurein 1.2. For this purpose, the interaction of aurein 1.2 and LLAA with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In addition, the structure of peptides and their antibacterial activity were investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and dilution test method, respectively. MD results showed that LLAA is more flexible compared with aurein 1.2. Furthermore, LLAA loses its structure more than aurein 1.2 in the DPPC bilayer. A higher amount of water molecules penetrate into bilayer in the presence of LLAA relative to aurein 1.2. According to the antibacterial result that indicated LLAA is remarkably more active than aurein 1.2, it can be concluded that flexibility of the peptide is a determining factor in antibacterial activity. Probably, flexibility of the peptides facilitates formation of effective pores in the lipid bilayer.  相似文献

Exposure to ethanol is a stress condition that Salmonella typhimurium often encounters during its life cycle. Food, beverage, drugs, and cosmetics have a long history of using alcohols to control pathogens. Ethanol is also commonly used for disinfecting medical instruments. This study was conducted to evaluate the ethanol stress variations on the protein profile, cell structure, and serologic features of S. typhimurium. Sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed the phage shock protein G (pspG), a new ethanol-induced stress protein in cells adapted to 10% ethanol. The result was confirmed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The maximum quantity of this 9.02-kDa protein was produced in 12.5% (v/v) of ethanol-treated cultures. Scanning electron microscopy has demonstrated new phenotypic characteristics in bacterial structure. The cells were unable to undergo binary fission. This phenomenon explains the tight attachment of bacteria in a colony. Overall, ethanol extreme stress induced expression of new proteins like PspG and repression of some other proteins in S. typhimurium. These induction and repression processes have inflicted dramatic changes on Salmonella behaviors. Crocus, a genus of Iridaceae is mostly grown in areas with Mediterranean environment as the best region. Saffron (C. sativus) is a perennial plant and is cultivated as an industrial crop in several regions of Iran. In this research, five accessions of cultivated Saffron from five areas in Khorasan, and Esfahan including Gonabad, Ferdows, Torbat-e-Heyidariye, Estahbanat, Gopayegan were used. Other nine species of saffron were grown naturally in Iran; so we collected two wild species (C. caspius and C. speciosus) from north of Iran (Gilan Province). RAPD markers were used to classify these species and to find their relationships. In the results of this study, the cluster analysis showed two distinct groups. Also, the maximum similarity was seen between C. caspius and C. speciosus (0.82) and the minimum was between Estahbanat, Ferdows accessions and C. speciosus (0.33). Finally, this method as a convenience procedure could be used to separate different accessions and species of Crocus as well.  相似文献

Background

Accelerometers, initially waist-worn but increasingly wrist-worn, are used to assess physical activity free from reporting-bias. However, its acceptability by study participants is unclear. Our objective is to assess factors associated with non-consent to a wrist-mounted accelerometer in older adults.

Methods

Data are from 4880 Whitehall II study participants (1328 women, age range = 60–83), requested to wear a wrist-worn accelerometer 24 h every day for 9 days in 2012/13. Sociodemographic, behavioral, and health-related factors were assessed by questionnaire and weight, height, blood pressure, cognitive and motor function were measured during a clinical examination.

Results

210 participants had contraindications and 388 (8.3%) of the remaining 4670 participants did not consent. Women, participants reporting less physical activity and less favorable general health were more likely not to consent. Among the clinical measures, cognitive impairment (Odds Ratio = 2.21, 95% confidence interval: 1.22–4.00) and slow walking speed (Odds Ratio = 1.38, 95% confidence interval: 1.02–1.86) were associated with higher odds of non-consent.

Conclusions

The rate of non-consent in our study of older adults was low. However, key markers of poor health at older ages were associated with non-consent, suggesting some selection bias in the accelerometer data.  相似文献

Pneumonia, the inflammatory state of lung tissue primarily due to microbial infection, claimed 52,306 lives in the United States in 20071 and resulted in the hospitalization of 1.1 million patients2. With an average length of in-patient hospital stay of five days2, pneumonia and influenza comprise significant financial burden costing the United States $40.2 billion in 20053. Under the current Infectious Disease Society of America/American Thoracic Society guidelines, standard-of-care recommendations include the rapid administration of an appropriate antibiotic regiment, fluid replacement, and ventilation (if necessary). Non-standard therapies include the use of corticosteroids and statins; however, these therapies lack conclusive supporting evidence4. (Figure 1)Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a cost-effective adjunctive treatment of pneumonia that has been shown to reduce patients’ length of hospital stay, duration of intravenous antibiotics, and incidence of respiratory failure or death when compared to subjects who received conventional care alone5. The use of manual manipulation techniques for pneumonia was first recorded as early as the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918, when patients treated with standard medical care had an estimated mortality rate of 33%, compared to a 10% mortality rate in patients treated by osteopathic physicians6. When applied to the management of pneumonia, manual manipulation techniques bolster lymphatic flow, respiratory function, and immunological defense by targeting anatomical structures involved in the these systems7,8, 9, 10.The objective of this review video-article is three-fold: a) summarize the findings of randomized controlled studies on the efficacy of OMT in adult patients with diagnosed pneumonia, b) demonstrate established protocols utilized by osteopathic physicians treating pneumonia, c) elucidate the physiological mechanisms behind manual manipulation of the respiratory and lymphatic systems. Specifically, we will discuss and demonstrate four routine techniques that address autonomics, lymph drainage, and rib cage mobility: 1) Rib Raising, 2) Thoracic Pump, 3) Doming of the Thoracic Diaphragm, and 4) Muscle Energy for Rib 1.5,11  相似文献
