Anogeissus dhofarica (Combretaceae) is an endemic tree of the monsoon affected coastal mountains of the southern Arabian Peninsula, being the character species of the Hybantho durae–Anogeissetum dhofaricae association, a drought deciduous, monsoon forest community found only in the Dhofar region of southern Oman and the eastern Al‐Mahra region of south‐east Yemen. Due to the steep precipitation gradient from the centre to the edges in this monsoon affected area, A. dhofarica is found in two different habitat types: in continuous woodland belts of the Hawf and Dhofar mountains, and in isolated, scattered woodland patches, as found especially in the Fartak Mts (south‐east Yemen). Fifteen populations (212 individuals) from across the whole distribution area of the species were analysed using amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting to: (1) evaluate the consequences of population fragmentation on the genetic diversity harboured in isolated patches versus cohering stands of the species and (2) to reconstruct the phylogeographical pattern of A. dhofarica as a consequence of oscillations in the monsoon activity during the Pleistocene and Holocene. The analysis of among‐population genetic differentiation and within‐population genetic diversity in A. dhofarica populations resulted in a lack of genetic pauperization and genetic differentiation of populations of the distinctly isolated patches of the Fartak Mts compared to the more luxurious forests of the Hawf and Dhofar regions. This is considered to be due to the high buffer capacity against the loss of genetic diversity caused by the long‐lived life‐form of the species combined with the capability to propagate clonally and the relatively recent fragmentation of Anogeissus forests into the described patches rather than due to high values of gene flow among remnant populations caused by bee pollination and anemochorical and hydrochorical diaspore dispersal. The phylogeographical pattern of the species argues for a quite recent fragmentation of a once continuous forest belt of A. dhofarica that is rather connected with climate changes in the Holocene than triggered by aridity–humidity oscillations reported for the Pleistocene. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 97 , 40–51.  相似文献

Abstract: The virgellar spine is one of the most consistent features of the graptolite sicula. It is present in a large number of graptoloid groups, but evolved separately and independently in these as it is seen from the presence of the spine in either ventral (Axonophora) or dorsal (Phyllograptus, Xiphograptus) position. The evolution of the virgellar spine in the Pan‐Bireclinata in the Upper Dapingian to Lower Darriwilian time interval is known to follow four main steps, from a simple rutellum, through a lamelliform rutellum and a lanceolate virgella to the true virgellar spine. For the xiphograptids and in Phyllograptus, the origin and early development is less well documented, but appears to follow a similar path. However, the individual stages are condensed, and a true virgellar spine emerges already in the Floian time interval. A virgellar spine was found in Didymograptellus bifidus, necessitating a revision of the diagnosis of the genus Didymograptellus. A number of species of the virgellate genera Xiphograptus, Yutagraptus and Didymograptellus are described from isolated material for the first time. The species are useful for the biostratigraphic correlation of endemic mid‐continent North American faunas with the Pacific Type faunal realm. Xiphograptus artus sp. nov., Didymograptellus primus sp. nov. and Didymograptellus cowheadensis sp. nov. from the Cow Head Group of western Newfoundland are described as new.  相似文献

The purpose of the current investigation was to study the effect of Ca2+ (0, 3.5 and 20 mM concentrations) on the antioxidant systems in the halophyte Cakile maritima under NaCl stress (0, 100, 200 and 400 mM NaCl). Plants treated with both moderate calcium (3.5 mM) and salt levels (100 mM) showed the maximum growth, and the addition of 20 mM calcium to the nutrient media did not significantly reduce the growth under the moderate salt treatment. The absence of calcium associated with high salt concentration induced a strong reduction of biomass production. The tolerance of C. maritima at moderate salinity and calcium was related with the lowest values of the parameters indicative of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, electrolyte leakage and hydrogen peroxide concentration). This was accompanied with a higher peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase and glutathione reductase activities. In contrast, in the absence of calcium, those enzymes showed the lowest activities under all salt treatments. As a whole, it can be noticed that salt tolerance was improved by moderate calcium concentration; however, the absence of calcium has a drastic effect on C. maritima.  相似文献

Twenty‐seven polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated from red clover (Trifolium pratense). Allelic variability and cross‐species amplification were assessed on 24 red clover and eight white clover (Trifolium repens) genotypes. The number of alleles detected in red clover ranged from two to 25. Observed and expected heterozygosities were high with average values of 0.71 and 0.88, respectively. Five of the 27 loci were also successfully amplified from white clover, where two to 13 alleles were detected. These highly polymorphic microsatellite loci provide powerful tools for population genetic studies as well as for marker‐assisted selection in this important forage legume species.  相似文献

The use of a two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis joined with Western blotting allowed us to investigate the reactivities of antibodies present in sera from mice and humans to antigens of Candida albicans blastoconidia. The analysis of the antibody response in the two models studied and the comparison between the antibody response in infected and noninfected individuals showed that the infection by C. albicans produces changes in the antibody response which may be of relevance in the serodiagnosis of invasive candidiasis. These changes include the induction of antibodies against new antigens, the disappearance of antibodies against a group of antigens and variations in the reactivity of antibodies directed to a different group of antigens. The technique used resolved the isoforms of several antigens including enolase. It is concluded that the antibody response in humans and mice with candidiasis is not homogeneously directed to all the isoforms of an antigen.  相似文献

The optimization of carbon use in pilot-scale outdoor tubular photobioreactors is investigated in this study. The behavior of a 0.20-m(3) tubular photobioreactor was studied, with and without algae, by steady-state and pulse dynamic-response analysis experiments. A model of the system was obtained and implemented in a programmable control unit and was used to control the reactor under normal production conditions. Results showed that, using and on-off control, the mean daily CO(2) flow in the reactor was 0.86 g min(-1), 19.7% of this being lost. By using a predictive control algorithm the mean daily CO(2) flow was reduced to 0.74 g min(-1), with losses being reduced to 15.6%. In this case, pH tracking was not adequate, especially at the beginning and end of the daylight period, because the variation in solar irradiance was not considered. Taking solar irradiance into account resulted in better performance, with mean daily CO(2) flow reduced to 0.70 g min(-1), and carbon losses reduced to 5.5%. pH tracking was improved and valve actuation was reduced. Improvement of pH control reduced pH gradients in the culture, which increased the photosynthesis rate and biomass productivity of the system. Biomass productivity increased from 1.28 to 1.48 g L(-1) day-(1) when on-off control was replaced by model-based predictive control plus solar irradiance effect mode. Implementation of this methodology in outdoor photobioreactors can increase productivity by 15% and reduce the cost of producing biomass by >6%. Clearly, application of effective control techniques, such as model-based predictive control (MPC), must be considered when developing these processes.  相似文献

A dynamic model of photosynthesis is developed, accounting for factors such as photoadaptation, photoinhibition, and the "flashing light effect." The model is shown to explain the reported photosynthesis-irradiance responses observed under various conditions (constant low light, constant intense irradiance, flashing light, diurnal variation in irradiance). As significant distinguishing features, the model assumes: (1) The stored photochemical energy is consumed in an enzyme-mediated process that obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics; and (2) photoinhibition has a square-root dependence on irradiance. Earlier dynamic models of photosynthesis assumed a first-order dependence of photoinhibition on irradiance and different kinetics of consumption of the stored energy than used in this work. These earlier models could not explain the photosynthesis-irradiance behavior under the full range of irradiance scenarios-a shortcoming that is overcome in the model developed in this work.  相似文献

Tumoral angiogenesis is regulated by the balance between factors that activate and inhibit angiogenesis. Elevated levels of activators have been associated with a poor prognosis in cancer patients, but little is known about the net balance between circulating activators and inhibitors in these patients. This study was designed to determine whether the balance between circulating concentrations of the angiogenesis inhibitor TSP-1 and the activator VEGF differs from that in healthy persons, and to shed light on the possible role of platelets in this balance. Twenty-five cancer patients and 18 healthy subjects were included. Serum and plasma concentrations of VEGF, TSP-1 and PF4 were measured by ELISA. Our results showed that in healthy subjects the balance between the TSP-1 and VEGF concentrations in serum and in serum minus plasma was twice to three times as high as in cancer patients (p < 0.05). The theoretical TSP-1 content per platelet was greater in healthy subjects than in patients (94 vs. 53.6 ng/mL, p < 0.05), and platelet activation (determined indirectly as the plasma concentration of PF4) was greater in cancer patients (129 vs. 48 IU/mL, p < 0.01). Platelet activation correlated significantly with serum concentration of TSP-1 (r = 0.470, p = 0.018) and showed a tendency toward correlation with plasma concentration of TSP-1 (r = 0.382, p = 0.059). Our findings show that the circulating TSP-1/VEGF balance is diminished in cancer patients. Platelet activation may play an important role in this decrease and may ultimately lead to increased angiogenic activity in these patients.  相似文献
