Defining healthy weight is not easy and for an adolescent with all concerns about newly developing physiognomy it is even harder. The aim of this study was to find out the frequency of obesity and the association between the body mass index (BMI), weight-control behaviors and self-perceived body weight status in high school students of a southern city of Turkey. The students from 10 schools were randomly selected among 46,271 students of 72 high schools in Adana from 1999 to 2000. The response rate was 94.8% (2352/2480). The Turkish version of Youth Risk Behavior Survey Questionnaire (YRBSQ) was completed by the students. The students' weights and heights were measured. The mean age was 16.5 +/- 1.0 years of age (range = 14-21 years). The mean BMI was 21.0 +/- 3.1, 25.5% of students were underweight, 65.7% were normal, 6.4% were overweight and 2.3% were obese (p = 0.0001). Of all students, 24.3% defined themselves as thin, 45.3% as normal, 24.9% as overweight and 5.5% as obese (p = 0.0001). The percentage of girls defining their body weight as overweight and obese was significantly higher than the boys (p = 0.0001). Of all students, 35.5% wanted to lose weight, 22.3% wanted to gain weight, 27.8% wanted to keep their current weight. Intention (p = 0.0001) and interventions to lose weight such as going on a diet (p = 0.0001), provocative vomiting (p = 0.0001) and 24-hours starving (p = 0.0001) were significantly higher in girls than boys. Of students, 26.8% (n=620) were on a diet program either to lose or to keep their body weight. There was significant relationship between being on a diet program and intention to change body weight (p = 0.047). We concluded that adolescents living in Adana have relatively higher risk of being underweight than being obese and have unhealthy weight changing plans due to their misperception of their body images. Adolescents may be unconscious on plans and attempts to change their body weights and nutrition and we suggest that education on nutrition and health is required for adolescents. 相似文献

A sensitive and specific HPLC method has been developed for the assay of amlodipine in human plasma. The assay involves derivatization with 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-Cl), solid-phase extraction on a silica column and isocratic reversed-phase chromatography with fluorescence detection. Nortriptyline hydrochloride was used as an internal standard. The assay was linear over the concentration range of 0.25–18.00 ng/ml. Both of the within-day and day-to-day reproducibility and accuracy were less than 11.80% and 12.00%, respectively. Expression and transport activity of Sodium-dependent Vitamin C Transporter 2 (SVCT2) was shown in various tissues and organs. Vitamin C was shown to be cerebroprotective in several animal models of stroke. Data on expression, localization and transport activity of SVCT2 after cerebral ischemia, however, has been scarce so far. Thus, we studied the expression of SVCT2 after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in mice by immunohistochemistry. We found an upregulation of SVCT2 after stroke. Co-stainings with Occludin, Von-Willebrand Factor and CD34 demonstrated localization of SVCT2 in brain capillary endothelial cells in the ischemic area after stroke. Time-course analyses of SVCT2 expression by immunohistochemistry and western blots showed upregulation in the subacute phase of 2-5 days. Radioactive uptake assays using (14)C-labelled ascorbic acid showed a significant increase of ascorbic acid uptake into the brain after stroke. Taken together, these results provide evidence for the expression and transport activity of SVCT2 in brain capillary endothelial cells after transient ischemia in mice. These results may lead to the development of novel neuroprotective strategies in stroke therapy. 相似文献

Odanacatib is a potent, selective, and neutral cathepsin K inhibitor which was developed to address the metabolic liabilities of the Cat K inhibitor L-873724. Substituting P1 and modifying the P2 side chain led to a metabolically robust inhibitor with a long half-life in preclinical species. Odanacatib was more selective in whole cell assays than the published Cat K inhibitors balicatib and relacatib. Background and Objectives
Accurate diagnosis of febrile seizures in children presenting after paroxysmal episodes associated with fever, is hampered by the lack of objective postictal biomarkers. The aim of our study was to investigate whether FS are associated with increased levels of serum copeptin, a robust marker of arginine vasopressin secretion.Methods
This was a prospective emergency-setting cross-sectional study of 161 children between six months and five years of age. Of these, 83 were diagnosed with febrile seizures, 69 had a febrile infection without seizures and nine had epileptic seizures not triggered by infection. Serum copeptin and prolactin levels were measured in addition to standard clinical, neurophysiological, and laboratory assessment. Clinical Trial Registration: NCT01884766.Results
Circulating copeptin was significantly higher in children with febrile seizures (median [interquartile range] 18.9 pmol/L [8.5-36.6]) compared to febrile controls (5.6 pmol/L [4.1-9.4]; p <0.001), with no differences between febrile and epileptic seizures (21.4 pmol/L [16.1-46.6]; p = 0.728). In a multivariable regression model, seizures were the major determinant of serum copeptin (beta 0.509; p <0.001), independently of clinical and baseline laboratory indices. The area under the receiver operating curve for copeptin was 0.824 (95% CI 0.753-0.881), significantly higher compared to prolactin (0.667 [0.585-0.742]; p <0.001). The diagnostic accuracy of copeptin increased with decreasing time elapsed since the convulsive event (at 120 min: 0.879 [0.806-0.932] and at <60 min: 0.975 [0.913-0.997]).Conclusions
Circulating copeptin has high diagnostic accuracy in febrile seizures and may be a useful adjunct for accurately diagnosing postictal states in the emergency setting. 相似文献77.
In this study, bioaccumulation of heavy metal and dye by Aspergillus versicolor was investigated. Optimum pH values of the maximum heavy metal bioaccumulation was found as 6 for 50 mg/L Cr(VI), Ni(II) and 5 for Cu(II) ions with the 99.89%, 30.05% and 29.06% removal yield, respectively. The bioremoval of the dye up to 800 mg/L at pH 5 and 6 was investigated and 27.15% and 28.95% removal rates were measured respectively. The presence of Cr(VI) with dye, decreased the uptake yield for both pollutants. In the medium with Cu(II) and dye, dye removal was not affected by Cu(II), but Cu(II) removal rate increased from 29.06% to 37.91% by the existence of the dye. When Ni(II) and dye were combined, neither pollutant affected the other’s removal yield. These results indicate that the isolated A. versicolor strain deserves attention as a promising bioaccumulator of heavy metal ions and reactive dyes in wastewater effluents. 相似文献

Microalgae harvesting via pH induced flocculation along with utilization of recovered medium after flocculation is one of the most economical methods for separating the microalgal biomass in order to reduce the dewatering cost. In this study, optimization of marine and freshwater microalgae flocculation by pH adjustment was investigated via central composite design methodology. One molar of KOH and NaOH solutions were used to increase the pH level of the microalgal culture. Increasing pH value of the medium provided the highest flocculation efficiency up to 92.63 and 86.18% with pH adjusted to 10.5 with KOH and NaOH solutions for marine microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata and freshwater microalgae Chlorella minutissima, respectively. Also, it was revealed that microalgae cells were still alive after flocculation process and their biochemical composition was not changed, and flocculated medium can be used again for the next microalgal production. According to the results, it can be said that this method is cheap and effective, simple to operate and provides the utilization of flocculated medium again. 相似文献

Boron contamination in the agricultural lands is an important problem for Western Turkey, which has rich boron deposits. This study was carried out in Nazilli regions upon orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) plants irrigated with relatively high boron laden channel waters (LCI) and with well waters (LWI) which contain lower amounts of boron. The leaves of the plants irrigated with channel water were found to contain twice the amount of boron compared with those irrigated with well waters. Boron content of leaves in both groups were approximately ten times the boron content in the soil on which they are grown. In the leaves of the plants irrigated with channel waters there were approximately 50% chlorophyll loss and higher chlorophyll a/b and caretonoid/chlorophyll ratios. In the excessive boron containing leaves was found higher soluble protein and carbohydrate contents, but lower determined free proline value. In plants that irrigated with high boron laden channel water significantly lower -tocopherol content and two fold higher ascorbate concentration were determined. The lower activities of catalase and glutathione reductase enzymes and higher total superoxide dismutase activity were measured in high boron content leaves. The retardation of growth due to boron toxicity can be attributed to the chlorophyll loss and inhibition of the carbohydratemetabolism. Boron at toxic level may cause the cell membrane lipids to be damaged by the free radicals by decreasing the -tocopherol levels. The increase in the ascorbate concentration may have a vital role in the protection of the inner cell structures against the boron toxicity. 相似文献

The purpose of our study is to assist in understanding the effects of wireless electromagnetic waves on carbonic anhydrase (CA) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymes activities in the different tissues of the rats. For this purpose, two different groups each of which contains eight rats (n = 8) were formed as being control group and wireless electromagnetic wave‐administered group. The rats were necropsied after 60 min from the injection of chemicals into the rats intraperitoneally. The different tissues of the rats were extracted. CA and AChE enzymes activities were measured for each tissue. All the experimental results were provided in mean ± S.D. Statistical significance was identified to be P < 0.05. It was observed that there were significant changes of enzyme activities in wireless‐administered group in salivary gland, stomach, colon, liver, and striated muscle tissues. 相似文献
