Dating applications (apps) on smartphones have become increasingly popular. The aim of this study was to explore the association between the use of dating apps and risky sexual behaviours. Data were collected in four university campuses in Hong Kong. Subjects completed a structured questionnaire asking about the use of dating apps, sexual behaviours, and sociodemographics. Multiple linear and logistics regressions were used to explore factors associated with sexual risk behaviours. Six hundred sixty-six subjects were included in the data analysis. Factors associated with having unprotected sexual intercourse with more lifetime sexual partners included use of dating apps (β = 0.93, p<0.01), having one’s first sexual intercourse before 16 years of age (β = 1.74, p<0.01), being older (β = 0.4, p<0.01), currently being in a relationship (= 0.69, p<0.05), having a monthly income at least HKD$5,000 (β = 1.34, p<0.01), being a current smoker (β = 1.52, p<0.01), and being a current drinker (β = 0.7, p<0.01). The results of a multiple logistic regression analysis found that users of dating apps (adjust odds ratio: 0.52, p<0.05) and current drinkers (adjust odds ratio: 0.40, p<0.01) were less likely to have consistent condom use. Users of dating apps (adjust odds ratio: 1.93, p<0.05), bisexual/homosexual subjects (adjust odds ratio: 2.57, p<0.01) and female subjects (adjust odds ratio: 2.00, p<0.05) were more likely not to have used condoms the last time they had sexual intercourse. The present study found a robust association between using dating apps and sexual risk behaviours, suggesting that app users had greater sexual risks. Interventions that can target app users so that they can stay safe when seeking sexual partners through dating apps should be developed.  相似文献

We compared nitrate concentrations, phytoplankton biomass, and phytoplankton community structure in lakes fed by glacier melt and snowmelt (GSF lakes) and by snowmelt only (SF lakes) within North Cascades National Park (NOCA) in Washington State, USA. In the U.S. Rocky Mountains, glacier melting has greatly increased nitrate concentrations in GSF lakes (52–236 µg NO3–N L?1) relative to SF lakes (1–14 µg NO3–N L?1) and thereby stimulated phytoplankton changes in GSF lakes. Considering NOCA contains approximately one-third of the glaciers in the continental U.S., and many mountain lakes that receive glacier meltwater inputs, we hypothesized that NOCA GSF lakes would have greater nitrate concentrations, greater phytoplankton biomass, and greater abundance of nitrogen-sensitive diatom species than NOCA SF lakes. However, at NOCA nitrate concentrations were much lower and differences between lake types were small compared to the Rockies. At NOCA, nitrate concentrations averaged 13 and 5 µg NO3–N L?1 in GSF and SF lakes, respectively, and a nitrate difference was not detectable in several individual years. There also was no difference in phytoplankton biomass or abundance of nitrogen-sensitive diatoms between lake types at NOCA. In contrast to the Rockies, there also was not a significant positive relationship between watershed percent glacier area and lake nitrate at NOCA. Results demonstrate that biogeochemical responses to global change in Western U.S. mountain lake watersheds may vary regionally. Regional differences may be affected by differing nitrogen deposition, climate, geology, or microbial processes within glacier environments, and merit further investigation.  相似文献

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method using a mobile phase of acetonitrile-methanol-trifluoroacetic acid-water (16.1:7.2:0.1:76.6, v/v/v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 ml min(-1) on a LiChrospher RP-18 column with UV (254 nm) detection has been developed for the separation of sulfadoxine and its metabolite N-acetyl sulfadoxine in plasma. No interferences due to endogenous compounds or common antimalarial drugs were noticed. The limit of detection for sulfadoxine and N-acetyl sulfadoxine was 0.01 microg ml(-1) with a signal-to-noise ratio of 5:1 while the limit of quantification was 2.5 microg ml(-1). Intra-day mean relative standard deviations (RSD's) for sulfadoxine and N-acetyl sulfadoxine were 2.6 and 2.8%, respectively, while mean inter-day RSD's for sulfadoxine and N-acetyl sulfadoxine were 2.4 and 2.8%, respectively. Extraction recoveries averaged 90.6% for sulfadoxine and 86.9% for N-acetyl sulfadoxine. The method was applied for the assay of sulfadoxine and its metabolite N-acetyl sulfadoxine in plasma from Plasmodium falciparum malaria patients. Mean plasma sulfadoxine concentrations on day 2 (51 h) from samples collected from sensitive and resistant P. falciparum patients treated with three tablets of Fansidar were 62.8 and 60.5 microg ml(-1), respectively. Mean ratio of N-acetyl sulfadoxine to sulfadoxine was 9.1% for responders and 13.9% for non-responders which revealed that higher amounts of the metabolite N-acetyl sulfadoxine were present in non-responders. The method described should find an application in the therapeutic monitoring of malaria patients.  相似文献

De novo expression of CD44 in glomerular parietal epithelial cells (PECs) leads to a prosclerotic and migratory PEC phenotype in glomerulosclerosis. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying CD44 expression by activated PECs remain largely unknown. This study was performed to examine the mediators responsible for CD44 induction in glomerular PECs in association with diabetes. CD44 expression and localization were evaluated in the glomeruli of Zucker diabetic rat kidneys and primary cultured PECs upon albumin stimulation. Real-time polymerase chain reaction confirmed an albuminuria-associated upregulation of the CD44 gene in the glomeruli of diabetic rats. Immunostaining analysis of diabetic kidneys further revealed an increase in CD44 in hypertrophic PECs, which often contain albumin-positive vesicles. Losartan treatment significantly attenuated albuminuria and lowered CD44 protein levels in the diabetic kidneys. In primary cultured rat PECs, rat serum albumin (0.25–1 mg/ml) caused a dose-dependent upregulation of CD44, claudin-1, and megalin protein expression, which was accompanied by an activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling. Albumin-induced CD44 and claudin-1 expression were greatly suppressed in the presence of the ERK1/2 inhibitor, U0126. In addition, knockdown of megalin by small interfering RNA interference in PECs resulted in a significant reduction of albumin-induced CD44 and claudin-1 proteins. Taken together, our results demonstrate that albumin induces CD44 expression by PECs via the activation of the ERK signaling pathway, which is partially mediated by endocytic receptor megalin.  相似文献

Oleuropein is one of the most abundant phenolic compounds found in olives. Epidemiological studies have indicated that an increasing intake of olive oil can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer. However, the potential effect(s) of oleuropein on estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer is not fully understood. This study aims to understand the anticancer effects and underlying mechanism(s) of oleuropein on ER-negative breast cancer cells in vitro. The effect of oleuropein on the viability of breast cancer cell lines was examined by mitochondrial dye-uptake assay, apoptosis by flow cytometric analysis, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation by DNA binding/reporter assays and protein expression by Western blot analysis. In the present report, thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide assay results indicated that oleuropein inhibited the viability of breast cancer cells, and its effects were more pronounced on MDA-MB-231 as compared with MCF-7 cells. It was further found that oleuropein increased the level of reactive oxygen species and also significantly inhibited cellular migration and invasion. In addition, the activation of NF-κB was abrogated as demonstrated by Western blot analysis, NF-κB-DNA binding, and luciferase assays. Overall, the data indicates that oleuropein can induce substantial apoptosis via modulating NF-κB activation cascade in breast cancer cells.  相似文献
