Erythrocytes and different strains of plant pathogenic bacteria agglutinated with aqueous and saline 1M NaCl extracts from Phaseolus vulgaris L. seeds, which showed similar gel electrophoretic patterns of proteins. Haemagglutinating activity in aqueous extracts was inhibited by some carbohydrates, especially N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, D-galactose and lactose. The agglutinin in this extract was purified by utilizing its ability to bind to Pseudomonas pisi cells followed by its removal from the bacteria by 0.3M galactose. Mitogenic activity of purified agglutinin was calculated as incorporation of 125I-iododesoxy-uridine into DNA of lymphocytes in vitro, which gave values between 25 and 50 μg/ml. The molecular weight of the subunits was found to be 31,500, estimated by mobility in SDS-PAGE. A solid phase competition-binding radioimmunoassay for bean agglutinin was developed in order to determine the affinity of this lectin in bean plants to phytopathogenic bacteria. The highest level of affinity was associated with the system formed by, Ps. pisi and lectin from fresh seeds.  相似文献

Abstract: The effect of different psychotropic drugs on the rate of DOPA accumulation after administration of a decarboxylase inhibitor (NSD 1015) was compared in the substantia nigra (SN) and caudate nucleus (CN) by a new radioenzymatic method. Inhibition of monoamine oxidase with pargyline or stimulation of dopamine (DA) receptors with apomorphine, N -n-propyl-norapomorphine or d -amphetamine reduced DOPA formation in the CN and SN to the same extent. Vice versa, both inhibition of DA receptors with haloperidol or (-)sulpiride and depletion of DA concentration with reserpine enhanced DOPA formation to a greater extent in the CN than in the SN. Apomorphine antagonized not only the effect of haloperidol and (-)sulpiride, but also, and even more effectively, that of reserpine. The results indicate that DA synthesis in the SN is controlled by both end-product inhibition and DA receptor-mediated mechanisms.  相似文献

We investigate on absorption and scattering from metal nanoparticles in view of possible applications to photovoltaic cells. The analysis, accounting for most of the parameters involved in the physical mechanism of scattering, is split into two parts. In the first part, scattering from a metallic sphere is treated analytically to investigate the dependence on sphere size, sphere metal, and surrounding medium. In the second part, scattering from a metallic particle is investigated as a function of particle shape (spheroids, hemispheres, and cylinders) via numerical simulations based on the finite-difference time-domain method. The aim of the work is to provide a systematic study on scattering and absorption by metal nanoparticles, exploring several combinations of material and geometrical parameters in order to identify those combinations that could play a key role in solar cell efficiency improvement.  相似文献

Several members of the transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) superfamily are expressed in the developing murine epidermis. Among these are TGFβ1, which is found in the basal layer, and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-6, located in the suprabasal layers. Although the role of TGFβ in cell growth has been studied extensively, little is known about the effects of these factors on keratinocyte differentiation. This study demonstrates that BMP-6 acts to positively regulate the differentiation of primary skin keratinocytes grown in culture. In contrast, TGFβ1 antagonizes keratinocyte differentiation blocking the upregulation of keratin markers by BMP-6. We show that the effects of BMP-6 on expression of keratin 1 (K1), a marker of differentiation, requires signaling through the Smad pathway. In addition, regulation of K1 levels by BMP-6 is modulated by the SEK signaling pathway. This suggests that regulation of keratinocyte differentiation by BMP-6 involves multiple signaling systems.  相似文献

. Rhodococcus erythropolis strain UPV-1 is able to grow on phenol as the only carbon and energy source and to remove formaldehyde completely from both synthetic and industrial wastewater. The rate of formaldehyde removal is independent of either initial biomass or formaldehyde concentration. The presence of viable, intact cells is strictly necessary for this removal to take place. Discontinuous and continuous formaldehyde-feed systems were successfully tested with synthetic wastewater in shaken flasks. Once biodegradation was well established in model synthetic wastewater, a real wastewater sample was obtained from a local phenolic and melamine resin-manufacturing company. Incubation of biomass with this wastewater at subtoxic concentrations of formaldehyde resulted in the complete removal of the pollutant. Parameters, such as chemical oxygen demand and toxicity, were assessed as indicators of wastewater cleanup progress.  相似文献

The epithelial bell which surrounds the clitoris in most mammals arises by fusion of visceral and parietal layers of the prepuce. Adhesion of the epithelia occurs between the squamous cells and a normal connection is formed by desmosomes and other junctions. There is total absence of cornifications. The squamous epithelial double lamina splits occasionally in some patches where the free surfaces are getting back to a normal process of keratinization as in the wall of the vestibule. In the closed pits the keratin scales form squamous granules without sebaceous secretion. Sometimes a similar process occurs in the human prepuce with the same results as described in cat and rabbit. The granules of keratin are different from the smegmaliths as they do not contain sebaceous secretion.  相似文献

Sex in some cyclically parthenogenetic rotifers is triggered when a threshold population density is achieved. In Brachionus, accumulation of a mixis-inducing protein (MIP) that the rotifers excrete into the medium is the proximal signal. Models explicitly accounting for MIP dynamics suggest that either (1) a positive feedback of MIP concentration on MIP production or (2) a switching relationship between the proportion of sexual females and MIP concentration is needed to produce a threshold response of mixis to population density. In order to examine both possibilities, experiments were conducted to estimate the sexual response to a dilution series of medium containing the MIP. The resulting sexual response patterns are consistent with the existence of a threshold response of mixis, but are insufficient to reject one hypothesized mechanism for the threshold response in favor of the other. However, the observed smooth increase of sexual offspring with MIP concentration is consistent with the hypothesis of positive feedback on MIP production, and deserves further investigation.  相似文献
