Although tool use is known to occur in species ranging from naked mole rats [1] to owls [2], chimpanzees are the most accomplished tool users [3-5]. The modification and use of tools during hunting, however, is still considered to be a uniquely human trait among primates. Here, we report the first account of habitual tool use during vertebrate hunting by nonhumans. At the Fongoli site in Senegal, we observed ten different chimpanzees use tools to hunt prosimian prey in 22 bouts. This includes immature chimpanzees and females, members of age-sex classes not normally characterized by extensive hunting behavior. Chimpanzees made 26 different tools, and we were able to recover and analyze 12 of these. Tool construction entailed up to five steps, including trimming the tool tip to a point. Tools were used in the manner of a spear, rather than a probe or rousing tool. This new information on chimpanzee tool use has important implications for the evolution of tool use and construction for hunting in the earliest hominids, especially given our observations that females and immature chimpanzees exhibited this behavior more frequently than adult males. 相似文献

Coprophagy is common in captive primates but has also been reported in the wild. For example, wild apes extract and reingest items from faeces. We term this behavior seed reingestion because the dung matrix is not consumed. We assessed the importance of seed reingestion in a population of savannah chimpanzees at Fongoli, southeastern Senegal, one of the hottest and driest areas of the species’ range, where chimpanzees have a relatively narrow dietary repertoire. We observed habituated chimpanzees on 122 d during 8 mo in 2005 and 2006, employing both focal subject and scan sampling of identified individuals for 1278 h of data collection. Chimpanzees reingested seeds of 2 species: Parkia biglobosa and Adansonia digitata. Both seed species have a hard protective shell, and the embryos are rich in proteins and lipids. Chimpanzees initially ate the fruit matrix pulp and swallowed intact seeds before reingesting and chewing/destroying seeds. Seed reingestion accounted for almost 2% of feeding time. We suggest that at Fongoli this behavior may be an adaptive strategy to maximize food intake, by softening the seed’s shell and making the seed’s content more accessible. 相似文献

Apicomplexans possess three translationally active compartments: the cytosol, a single tubular mitochondrion, and a vestigial plastid organelle called apicoplast. Mitochondrion and apicoplast are of bacterial evolutionary origin and therefore depend on a bacterial‐like translation machinery. The minimal mitochondrial genome contains only three ORFs, and in Toxoplasma gondii the absence of mitochondrial tRNA genes is compensated for by the import of cytosolic eukaryotic tRNAs. Although all compartments require a complete set of charged tRNAs, the apicomplexan nuclear genomes do not hold sufficient aminoacyl‐tRNA synthetase (aaRSs) genes to be targeted individually to each compartment. This study reveals that aaRSs are either cytosolic, apicoplastic or shared between the two compartments by dual targeting but are absent from the mitochondrion. Consequently, tRNAs are very likely imported in their aminoacylated form. Furthermore, the unexpected absence of tRNAMet formyltransferase and peptide deformylase implies that the requirement for a specialized formylmethionyl‐tRNAMet for translation initiation is bypassed in the mitochondrion of Apicomplexa. 相似文献

Emerging evidence suggests that renal endothelial function may be altered in ischemia-reperfusion injury. Acute kidney injury is sexually dimorphic, and estrogen protects renal tubular function after experimental ischemic injury. This study tested the hypothesis that during ischemia-reperfusion, estrogen alters glomerular endothelial function to prevent hyperpermeability. Glomerular endothelial cells were exposed to 8-h oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) followed by 4- and 8-h reoxygenation-glucose repletion. After 4-h reoxygenation-glucose repletion, transendothelial permeability to Ficoll-70 was reduced, and transendothelial resistance increased, by 17β-estradiol vs. vehicle treatment during OGD (OGD-vehicle: 91.0 ± 11.8%, OGD-estrogen: 102.6 ± 10.8%, P < 0.05). This effect was reversed by coadministration of G protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30) antagonist G15 with 17β-estradiol (OGD-estrogen-G15: 89.5 ± 6.9, P < 0.05 compared with 17β-estradiol). To provide preliminary confirmation of this result in vivo, Ficoll-70 was administered to mice 24 h after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CA/CPR). Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr) in these mice were elevated within 12 h following CA/CPR and reduced at 24 h by pretreatment with 17β-estradiol (BUN/SCr 17β-estradiol: 34 ± 19/0.2 ± 0.1 vehicle: 92 ± 49/0.5 ± 0.3, n = 8-12, P < 0.05). Glomerular sieving of Ficoll 70 was increased by CA/CPR within 2 h of injury and 17β-estradiol treatment (θ; 17β-estradiol: 0.74 ± 0.26 vs. vehicle: 1.05 ± 0.53, n = 14-15, P < 0.05). These results suggest that estrogen reduces postischemic glomerular endothelial hyperpermeability at least in part through GPR30 and that estrogen may regulate post CA/CPR glomerular permeability in a similar fashion in vivo. 相似文献

The last part of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) habituation process of the Ta? South Group was monitored over 2 years (1994-1996), during which all males and most of the females became habituated to observation by humans. The time needed (5-7 years) to habituate the community was similar to that recorded for the Ta? North Group and is comparable to other populations studied in Africa. Variation emerged in habituation rate: males were habituated earlier than females, and among females, sexually cycling individuals were habituated faster than non-cycling females. Such differences may be a function of both the methods used to find the chimpanzees and the sex of the individual. Reproductive status and individuality may also have influenced habituation rates by affecting the number of contacts required to habituate a chimpanzee to neutral humans. 相似文献

Background
The Astrophorida (Porifera, Demospongiae p) is geographically and bathymetrically widely distributed. Systema Porifera currently includes five families in this order: Ancorinidae, Calthropellidae, Geodiidae, Pachastrellidae and Thrombidae. To date, molecular phylogenetic studies including Astrophorida species are scarce and offer limited sampling. Phylogenetic relationships within this order are therefore for the most part unknown and hypotheses based on morphology largely untested. Astrophorida taxa have very diverse spicule sets that make them a model of choice to investigate spicule evolution.Methodology/Principal Findings
With a sampling of 153 specimens (9 families, 29 genera, 89 species) covering the deep- and shallow-waters worldwide, this work presents the first comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the Astrophorida, using a cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene partial sequence and the 5′ end terminal part of the 28S rDNA gene (C1-D2 domains). The resulting tree suggested that i) the Astrophorida included some lithistid families and some Alectonidae species, ii) the sub-orders Euastrophorida and Streptosclerophorida were both polyphyletic, iii) the Geodiidae, the Ancorinidae and the Pachastrellidae were not monophyletic, iv) the Calthropellidae was part of the Geodiidae clade (Calthropella at least), and finally that v) many genera were polyphyletic (Ecionemia, Erylus, Poecillastra, Penares, Rhabdastrella, Stelletta and Vulcanella). Conclusion
The Astrophorida is a larger order than previously considered, comprising ca. 820 species. Based on these results, we propose new classifications for the Astrophorida using both the classical rank-based nomenclature (i.e., Linnaean classification) and the phylogenetic nomenclature following the PhyloCode, independent of taxonomic rank. A key to the Astrophorida families, sub-families and genera incertae sedis is also included. Incongruences between our molecular tree and the current classification can be explained by the banality of convergent evolution and secondary loss in spicule evolution. These processes have taken place many times, in all the major clades, for megascleres and microscleres. 相似文献9.

Cephalopods play a key role in many marine trophic food webs and also constitute alternative fishery resources in the context of the ongoing decline in finfish stocks. Most coastal cephalopod species of commercial importance migrate into shallow waters during the breeding season to lay their eggs, and are consequently subjected to coastal contamination. Eggs of common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, European squid Loligo vulgaris, common octopus Octopus vulgaris and the sepiolid Rossia macrosoma were exposed during embryonic development to dissolved (110m)Ag, (109)Cd, (60)Co, (54)Mn and (65)Zn in order to determine their metal accumulation efficiencies and distribution among different egg compartments. Cuttlefish eggs, in which hard shells enclose the embryos, showed the lowest concentration factor (CF) values despite a longer duration of exposure. In contrast, octopus eggs, which are only protected by the chorionic membrane, accumulated the most metal. Uptake appears to be linked to the selective retention properties of the egg envelopes with respect to each element. The study also demonstrated that the octopus embryo accumulated (110m)Ag directly from the dissolved phase and also indirectly through assimilation of the contaminated yolk. These results raise questions regarding the potential contrasting vulnerability of early life stages of cephalopods to the metallic contamination of coastal waters. 相似文献
