The study of natural hybrid zones can illuminate aspects of lineage divergence and speciation in morphologically cryptic taxa. We studied a hybrid zone between two highly divergent but morphologically similar lineages (south‐western and south‐eastern) of the Iberian endemic Bosca's newt (Lissotriton boscai) in SW Iberia with a multilocus dataset (microsatellites, nuclear and mitochondrial genes). STRUCTURE and NEWHYBRIDS analyses retrieved few admixed individuals, which classified as backcrosses involving parental individuals of the south‐western lineage. Our results show asymmetric introgression of mtDNA beyond the contact from this lineage into the south‐eastern lineage. Analysis of nongeographic introgression patterns revealed asymmetries in the direction of introgression, but except for mtDNA, we did not find evidence for nonconcordant introgression patterns across nuclear loci. Analysis of a 150‐km transect across the hybrid zone showed broadly coincident cline widths (ca. 3.2–27.9 km), and concordant cline centres across all markers, except for mtDNA that is displaced ca. 60 km northward. Results from ecological niche modelling show that the hybrid zone is in a climatically homogenous area with suitable habitat for the species, suggesting that contact between the two lineages is unlikely to occur further south as their distributions are currently separated by an extensive area of unfavourable habitat. Taken together, our findings suggest the genetic structure of this hybrid zone results from the interplay of historical (biogeographic) and population‐level processes. The narrowness and coincidence of genetic clines can be explained by weak selection against hybrids and reflect a degree of reproductive isolation that is consistent with cryptic speciation.  相似文献

Phylogeny and biogeography of the Rhinella marina species complex (Amphibia, Bufonidae) revisited: implications for Neotropical diversification hypotheses. —Zoologica Scripta, 39, 128–140. A number of distinct hypotheses have been proposed to account for the origin of the considerable biological diversity found in the Neotropics, which is still a matter of intense debate. Here, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis of the Rhinella marina complex, a group of species widely distributed in Central and South America, combining published data with new sequences of three mtDNA genes (12S, 16S and cyt b) in order to clarify the evolutionary relationships and biogeographical history of the group. We included eight of the ten currently recognized R. marina group species and several outgroups. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference analyses produced similar topologies, with two well‐supported main clades, each characterized by a deep subdivision. One of these major clades includes the samples of R. marina from Central America and Ecuador (west of the Andes), whereas the other comprises the remaining species of the group and samples of R. marina from the Amazon basin and other areas east of the Andes. A Bayesian coalescent‐based method (BEAST) dated the divergence between the two major clades, and between the Central American and Ecuadorian clades to the Miocene, matching the timing of other Central‐South American faunal divergences. Taken together, the results highlight the importance of Tertiary events such as the Pebas/marine incursions into the Amazon basin and Andean uplift for the diversification and historical biogeography of R. marina, making such taxa paraphyletic, and provide new perspectives on the debate on its species status.  相似文献

Several Pseudomonas solanacearum strains which produced no detectable extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) in planta had been reported to remain highly virulent when tested at high inoculum concentrations (P. Xu, M. Iwata, S. Leong, and L. Sequeira, J. Bacteriol. 172:3946-3951, 1990; P. Xu, S. Leong, and L. Sequeira, J. Bacteriol. 170:617-622, 1988). Two of these mutants, KD700 and KD710, have now been molecularly and genetically mapped to the EPSI gene cluster described by Denny and Baek (Mol. Plant-Microbe Interact. 4:198-206, 1991). When a range of inoculum concentrations was used, these two mutants and all other EPS-defective mutants tested were found to be reduced in virulence to eggplants and tobacco relative to the wild-type strain. Thus, EPS consistently is required for the wild-type level of virulence in P. solanacearum.  相似文献

Previous studies on allozyme variation in five populations of the grasshopperDichroplus elongatus along a geographical gradient in Argentina revealed a significant degree of population structuring and a significant association between one of the loci (Aat-1) and latitude. As this could not be entirely explained by historical factors, the possible adaptive significance of this locus or loci in linkage disequilibrium was investigated in the present study, with an emphasis on the role of environmental variables correlated with latitude. The present paper reports a study of the geographical organization of allozyme diversity over a wider range of the distribution ofD. elongatus. The relation of allelic frequencies with geographic climatic variables was analysed. We have found (i) that different loci (Aat-1 andPep-1) covary significantly with different variables, (ii) discordance between genetic and geographical distances, (iii) copious gene flow that would mask allelic frequency differences due solely to genetic drift, (iv) and temporal stability of the gradient found. The results suggest that causes other than drift and migration may explain the observed directional patterns of variation inD. elongatus.  相似文献

Two cases of hepatic myelolipoma in Goeldi's monkeys from South America are described. One was a female evaluated due progressive abdominal distension. Ultrasound and computed tomography detected hepatic mass. Partial hepatectomy was performed, but the monkey died after surgery. Mounting levels of insecticide resistance within Australian Helicoverpa spp. populations have resulted in the adoption of non-chemical IPM control practices such as trap cropping with chickpea, Cicer arietinum (L.). However, a new leaf blight disease affecting chickpea in Australia has the potential to limit its use as a trap crop. Therefore this paper evaluates the potential of a variety of winter-active legume crops for use as an alternative spring trap crop to chickpea as part of an effort to improve the area-wide management strategy for Helicoverpa spp. in central Queensland's cotton production region. The densities of Helicoverpa eggs and larvae were compared over three seasons on replicated plantings of chickpea, Cicer arietinum (L.), field pea Pisum sativum (L), vetch, Vicia sativa (L.) and faba bean, Vicia faba (L.). Of these treatments, field pea was found to harbour the highest densities of eggs. A partial life table study of the fate of eggs oviposited on field pea and chickpea suggested that large proportions of the eggs laid on field pea suffered mortality due to dislodgment from the plants after oviposition. Plantings of field pea as a replacement trap crop for chickpea under commercial conditions confirmed the high level of attractiveness of this crop to ovipositing moths. The use of field pea as a trap crop as part of an area-wide management programme for Helicoverpa spp. is discussed.  相似文献

A new bacterial agglutinin was isolated from seeds of the soybean cultivar Clark. Purification was carried out by ammonium sulfate precipitation and ion-exchange chromatography. The agglutinin is a heat-labile glycoprotein most active at pH 4.0. Addition of Ca2+, Mn2+ and Mg2+ did not enhance the agglutinating activity of this glycoprotein. Gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate showed that the agglutinin is composed of two subunits of approximately 50,000 daltons each. In the undissociated state, it agglutinates Xanthomonas phaseoli var. sojensis, the causal agent of bacterial pustule disease of soybean, at concentrations as low as 10 micrograms protein per milliliter but has no hemagglutinating activity. The agglutinin could be distinguished from previously reported soybean lectins on the basis of solubility in ammonium sulfate, lack of hemagglutinating activity, molecular weight, hapten specificity, and immunological determinants.  相似文献

The Triassic Hope Bay Formation (Trinity Peninsula Group) includes a diverse ichnocoenosis in the Puerto Moro succession (Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula). The Hope Bay Formation is a thick turbidite succession with a minimum vertical exposure of 533 meters along the Hope Bay coast. The rocks are locally affected by contact metamorphism related to later arc magmatism. The ichnofossils are found mainly in thick- and thin-bedded sandstone-mudstone facies composed of a monotonous repetition of sandstone-mudstone cycles. The sandstones are usually medium grained, massive or parallel laminated; the mudstones are massive and rarely laminated. In the fine-grained rocks, mainly the mudstones, there are distinct densities of bioturbation, and at least six patterns were observed. The following ichnogenera were recognized: Arenicolites Salter 1857, Lophoctenium Richter 1850, Taenidium Heer 1877, Palaeophycus Hall 1847, Phycosiphon von Fischer-Ooster 1858 and Rhizocorallium Zenker 1836. All appear to be feeding-traces. The trace fossil assemblages occur mainly in black mudstones rich in organic material that suggest a low oxygen environment. The stratigraphic interval in which they occur is interpreted as progradational supra-fan lobes with channel fill and levee deposits. The thin-bedded turbidite and mudstone lithofacies, where the ichnofossils are abundant, is interpreted as a distal fan turbidite or levee deposit related to a long-term channel fill. This study is the first significant report of trace fossils in the Hope Bay Formation.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to discover if the respiratory metabolismof the roots of Plantago lanceolata L. differed from that ofthe roots of Plantago major L. Measurements of oxygen uptakeand dry weight of excised root systems during growth of seedlingsprovided evidence that the two species differed in the amountof respiration needed to support a given increase in dry weight.Excised root systems were given a 6-h pulse in [U-14C]sucrosefollowed by a 16.5-h chase in sucrose. The detailed distributionof 14C amongst the major components of the roots at the endof the pulse and the chase revealed no significant differencebetween the two species. Patterns of 14CO2 production from [1-14C],[2-14C], [3,4-14C], and [6-14C]glucose of excised root systemsfrom plants of three ages were similar for the two species.It is suggested that there is no conclusive evidence for anysignificant inherent difference in the respiratory metabolismof the roots of the two species.
