Evolutionary theory predicts adaptive adjustment in offspring sex ratio by females. Seasonal change in sex ratio is one possibility, tested here in two sister species, the Common sandpiper and the Spotted sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos and A. macularia. In the monogamous Common sandpiper, males are the most competitive sex. In each of 3 years, there was a change from mainly sons in early clutches to mainly daughters in late clutches. This seasonal adjustment of clutch sex ratio took place within the female before the eggs were laid, not by differential egg or chick survival. The sex of all eggs laid in the clutches used here was determined molecularly from chick blood taken at the time of hatching. The Spotted sandpiper in contrast is polyandrous, with partly reversed sex roles. There was no seasonal trend from sons to daughters in this species. When tested together, the two species differed significantly as predicted by the hypothesis of adaptive sex ratio adjustment by females. 相似文献

Background
Survival of people with HIV-2 and HTLV-1 infection is better than that of HIV-1 infected people, but long-term follow-up data are rare. We compared mortality rates of HIV-1, HIV-2, and HTLV-1 infected subjects with those of retrovirus-uninfected people in a rural community in Guinea-Bissau.Methods
In 1990, 1997 and 2007, adult residents (aged ≥15 years) were interviewed, a blood sample was drawn and retroviral status was determined. An annual census was used to ascertain the vital status of all subjects. Cox regression analysis was used to estimate mortality hazard ratios (HR), comparing retrovirus-infected versus uninfected people.Results
A total of 5376 subjects were included; 197 with HIV-1, 424 with HIV-2 and 325 with HTLV-1 infection. The median follow-up time was 10.9 years (range 0.0–20.3). The crude mortality rates were 9.6 per 100 person-years of observation (95% confidence interval 7.1-12.9) for HIV-1, 4.1 (3.4–5.0) for HIV-2, 3.6 (2.9–4.6) for HTLV-1, and 1.6 (1.5–1.8) for retrovirus-negative subjects. The HR comparing the mortality rate of infected to that of uninfected subjects varied significantly with age. The adjusted HR for HIV-1 infection varied from 4.0 in the oldest age group (≥60 years) to 12.7 in the youngest (15–29 years). The HR for HIV-2 infection varied from 1.2 (oldest) to 9.1 (youngest), and for HTLV-1 infection from 1.2 (oldest) to 3.8 (youngest).Conclusions
HTLV-1 infection is associated with significantly increased mortality. The mortality rate of HIV-2 infection, although lower than that of HIV-1 infection, is also increased, especially among young people. 相似文献894.

Clonally derived bacterial populations exhibit significant genotypic and phenotypic diversity that contribute to fitness in rapidly changing environments. Here, we show that serial passage of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium LT2 (StLT2) in broth, or within a mouse host, results in selection of an evolved population that inhibits the growth of ancestral cells by direct contact. Cells within each evolved population gain the ability to express and deploy a cryptic “orphan” toxin encoded within the rearrangement hotspot (rhs) locus. The Rhs orphan toxin is encoded by a gene fragment located downstream of the “main” rhs gene in the ancestral strain StLT2. The Rhs orphan coding sequence is linked to an immunity gene, which encodes an immunity protein that specifically blocks Rhs orphan toxin activity. Expression of the Rhs orphan immunity protein protects ancestral cells from the evolved lineages, indicating that orphan toxin activity is responsible for the observed growth inhibition. Because the Rhs orphan toxin is encoded by a fragmented reading frame, it lacks translation initiation and protein export signals. We provide evidence that evolved cells undergo recombination between the main rhs gene and the rhs orphan toxin gene fragment, yielding a fusion that enables expression and delivery of the orphan toxin. In this manner, rhs locus rearrangement provides a selective advantage to a subpopulation of cells. The photophase light intensity does not affect the scotophase melatonin response in the domestic pig

This study investigated the effects of the photophase light intensity on the scotophase melatonin response. Twelve, 8-month-old crossbred gilts were allocated to three groups of four and housed in temperature- and lighting-controlled climate rooms. The rooms had a light intensity of 40, 200 or 10,000 lx and a light-dark cycle of 12 L:12 D. The gilts were allowed to acclimatize to a new lighting regimen for 1 week before being sampled at 2h intervals for 24h. Following the sampling, pigs were transferred under a different light intensity, allowed to adjust for 1 week and sampled again. The procedure was repeated three times so that all the groups went through all three lighting regimens (light intensities). All the gilts exhibited a clear circadian serum melatonin rhythm under each lighting regimen with high melatonin concentrations occurring during the scotophase. There was no difference in the scotophase melatonin response in terms of mean concentrations or duration of increased melatonin levels within or between the groups under different lighting regimens. There was considerable inter-individual variation in the dark phase melatonin response but the individual profiles were consistent under the different lighting regimens. It is concluded that when a certain threshold light intensity (<40lx) is exceeded, the photophase light intensity has no effect on the scotophase melatonin response. These results imply that extremely high light intensities during the photophase would provide no additional benefits compared with normal comfortable light intensity, if artificial lighting programs were introduced to commercial piggeries in order to reduce seasonal effects on reproduction. 相似文献

A beta-phosphoglucomutase (beta-PGM) mutant of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ATCC 19435 was constructed using a minimal integration vector and double-crossover recombination. The mutant and the wild-type strain were grown under controlled conditions with different sugars to elucidate the role of beta-PGM in carbohydrate catabolism and anabolism. The mutation did not significantly affect growth, product formation, or cell composition when glucose or lactose was used as the carbon source. With maltose or trehalose as the carbon source the wild-type strain had a maximum specific growth rate of 0.5 h(-1), while the deletion of beta-PGM resulted in a maximum specific growth rate of 0.05 h(-1) on maltose and no growth at all on trehalose. Growth of the mutant strain on maltose resulted in smaller amounts of lactate but more formate, acetate, and ethanol, and approximately 1/10 of the maltose was found as beta-glucose 1-phosphate in the medium. Furthermore, the beta-PGM mutant cells grown on maltose were considerably larger and accumulated polysaccharides which consisted of alpha-1,4-bound glucose units. When the cells were grown at a low dilution rate in a glucose and maltose mixture, the wild-type strain exhibited a higher carbohydrate content than when grown at higher growth rates, but still this content was lower than that in the beta-PGM mutant. In addition, significant differences in the initial metabolism of maltose and trehalose were found, and cell extracts did not digest free trehalose but only trehalose 6-phosphate, which yielded beta-glucose 1-phosphate and glucose 6-phosphate. Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the key enzyme of polyamine synthesis. The physiological activity of ODC is associated with cell proliferation, and high ODC activities are encountered in rapidly growing cancer cells. We have cloned a cDNA for a novel human protein that is 54% identical to ODC and 45% identical to antizyme inhibitor (AZI). mRNA for ODC-paralogue (ODC-p) was found only in the central nervous system and testes, suggesting a role in terminal differentiation rather than cell proliferation. ODC-p occurs at least in eight alternatively spliced forms. In vitro translated ODC-p did not decarboxylate ornithine, whereas, in vivo, one splice variant exerted modest ODC-like activity upon expression in COS-7 cells. ODC-p has a unique mutation in cysteine 360, where this ornithine decarboxylase reaction-directing residue is substituted by a valine. This substitution might lead to an enzymatic reaction that differs from typical ODC activity. ODC-p might also function as a brain- and testis-specific AZI. 相似文献

Genetic polymorphisms in vitamin D metabolism and signaling genes have been inconsistently associated with risk of breast cancer, though few studies have examined SNPs in vitamin D-related genes other than the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and particularly have not examined the association with the retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRA) gene which may be a key vitamin D pathway gene. We conducted a nested case-control study of 734 cases and 1435 individually matched controls from a population-based prospective cohort study, the Northern Sweden Mammary Screening Cohort. Tag and functional SNPs were genotyped for the VDR, cytochrome p450 24A1 (CYP24A1), and RXRA genes. We also genotyped specific SNPs in four other genes related to vitamin D metabolism and signaling (GC/VDBP, CYP2R1, DHCR7, and CYP27B1). SNPs in the CYP2R1, DHCR7, and VDBP gene regions that were associated with circulating 25(OH)D concentration in GWAS were also associated with plasma 25(OH)D in our study (p-trend <0.005). After taking into account the false discovery rate, these SNPs were not significantly associated with breast cancer risk, nor were any of the other SNPs or haplotypes in VDR, RXRA, and CYP24A1. We observed no statistically significant associations between polymorphisms or haplotypes in key vitamin D-related genes and risk of breast cancer. These results, combined with the observation in this cohort and most other prospective studies of no association of circulating 25(OH)D with breast cancer risk, do not support an association between vitamin D and breast cancer risk. 相似文献
