The growth of Volvox globator L. and Volvox aureus Ehr. was measured at five temperatures and nine phosphorus concentrations. Growth rates were hyperbolically related to phosphorus concentrations for all temperatures using a Monod growth model. Optimal growth rates of 1.17 and 1.00 doublings d?1 were obtained at 20°C for V. globator and V. aureus, respectively. Neither species grew at 5°C. The half-saturation constants for growth, Ks, were lower for V. aureus. Phosphorus uptake by both species was also dependent upon external phosphorus concentrations and temperature. At all temperatures, maximum phosphorus uptake (μmol P colony?1 min?1) was similar for both species; however, the half-saturation constants for uptake showed significant differences between the species. Comparisons of the kinetic constants for growth and phosphorus uptake suggest that V. aureus will outcompete V. globator under phosphorus limited, conditions.  相似文献

Squid giant axons are voltage-clamped with ascending potential ramps whose slopes range from 0.5 mV/msec to 60 mV/msec and delayed (K+) currents are observed. The parametric current-voltage curves exhibit a delay period of minimal current followed by a rapid increase of current toward a final steady state. Both the initial delay and the slope of the subsequent rising phase increase with increasing ramp slope. When the Hodgkin-Huxley equations are used to generate theoretical current-voltage curves, the sharp difference between the delay and rising phases is muted and the ramp slope must be increased to produce an adequate representation of the data. A muted biphasic response is also observed when the current-voltage curves are generated using modified Hodgkin-Huxley parameters and a correction for K+ accumulation in the periaxonal space. These modified equations provide an accurate fit for step-potential clamp current data. Since the ramp experiments include all relevant clamping potentials, the experiments provide a sensitive test for kinetic models of K+ on flow in the delayed (K+) channels of squid giant axon.  相似文献

The authors carried out a cytogenetic examination of chromosomal aberrations of peripheral lymphocytes (100 cells evaluated in each sample) with simultaneous monitoring of the level of exposure by means of determination of nickel in the urine, serum and hair. The series included 21 workers occupationally exposed to nickel at two workshops producing NiO (6 persons) and NiSO4 (15 persons) in a chemical plant. At the same time a comparable control group, i.e., 19 workers of the same chemical plant but without any direct occupational nickel exposure (clerks, service men, etc.), were examined in the same way. In the exposed group chromosomal aberrations of peripheral lymphocytes were detected with an average value of 6.41 +/- 1.9% (range 2-14%); in the group producing NiO it was, on the average, 9.5 +/- 3.2% (range 7-14%) whereas in the NiSO4 production workers it was only 5.2 +/- 1.9% (range 2-10%). There was a dependence of chromosomal aberrations of peripheral lymphocytes on the exposure time and on the nickel content of the biological material. Significantly increased values (in contrast to the normal value of chromosomal aberrations of peripheral lymphocytes, up to 2%) were detected in the control group as well (average value of 4.05 +/- 2.27%, range 1-10%). The authors explain this fact by the nickel-polluted environment of the whole observed chemical plant.  相似文献
