Use of ultrasound to locate a "lost" tissue expander injection port

We have presented a rapid and reliable method of finding lost injection valves. (A frustrating footnote, however, is that 1 week later the port had again migrated and could not be located. Since the further anticipated gain was marginal, the bladder was already nearly expanded, and the expense for repeated ultrasound was a consideration, no further attempts were made to locate this port by ultrasound for further filling).     

Purification of a 20 kDa phosphoprotein from epithelial cells and identification as a myosin light chain. Phosphorylation induced by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and phorbol ester

Previous studies on the mechanism of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) infection have revealed an increase in the phosphorylation state of a number of proteins in human laryngeal HEp-2 cells. The most prominent was an acidic phosphoprotein(s) of Mr 20-21 kDa. The present study reports: (a) a simple method for purification of phosphorylated 20 kDa protein; (b) identification of the 20 kDa phosphoprotein as myosin light chain; and (c) that the phorbol ester, TPA, also increased the phosphorylation of the 20 kDa myosin light chain. In contrast to the effects of EPEC, TPA stimulation resulted in the dissociation of myosin from the cytoskeleton to the cytosol.     

Electroantennogram measurements of atmospheric pheromone concentration after aerial and ground application of gypsy moth mating disruptants

Abstract:  A portable electroantennogram (EAG) sensor was used to measure relative atmospheric pheromone concentration in forest plots treated with aerial and ground applications of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lep., Lymantriidae), mating-disruption formulations. Five treatments (Disrupt II flakes with sticker, Disrupt II flakes without sticker, Disrupt II flakes in a sticker slurry, microcapsules and hand-applied Luretape), all applied at 75 g active ingredient per hectare and an untreated control were evaluated. Gypsy moth male catch in pheromone-baited traps and fertilization of deployed females were suppressed in all treatments, and no females deployed in treated plots produced more than 5% fertile eggs. Relative pheromone concentrations were significantly higher in the two treatments in which flakes were aerially applied with sticker and in the microcapsule treatment. Pheromone concentration measurements in the flakes without sticker and hand-applied treatments were not significantly different from those in the control. Mating success was negatively correlated with relative pheromone concentration. The ability of the EAG to detect differences in pheromone concentration that are correlated with mating success suggests that this could be a useful method for predicting the effectiveness of mating-disruption treatments.     

The Ontario cancer incidence survey, 1964-1966: a new approach to cancer data acquisition

The Ontario Cancer Incidence Survey of 1964-1966 proved that records already collected for other purposes can be linked to provide satisfactory incidence data with minimal duplication of effort. The survey yielded information on 81,155 malignant neoplasms; the 1966 incidence rate was 316.7 per 100,000 Ontario residents. Advantages of this system over orthodox registries are respectable geographic coverage and follow-up without reporting by physicians, and the full use of accumulated material. Disadvantages are the time-lag inherent in using service records submitted for other purposes, and initial difficulty in distinguishing between new and old cases. The problem of inadequate reporting of pathology on hospital separation forms is being solved. Survey tabulations are frequently used. The survey methods have been adapted for computer processing as an on-going provincial cancer registry.
