Within a specific fraction of acidic chromatin-associated proteins from HeLa and the lower eukaryote Physarum polycephalum numerous similarities exist. Several of the similar polypeptides in both cell types are synthesized and appear in the residual chromatin material while still others disappear in response to starvation, a common and universal stimulus. Proteins which incorporate no radioactive amino acids during starvation and ultimately disappear from the residual chromatin material are resynthesized upon refeeding. This resynthesis must be complete before mitosis will again occur. These observations suggest that within the complement of acidic chromatin proteins functional homologies exist in diverse eukaryotes.  相似文献

Fisher’s partitioning of genotypic values and genetic variance is highly relevant in the current era of genome-wide association studies (GWASs). However, despite being more than a century old, a number of persistent misconceptions related to nonadditive genetic effects remain. We developed a user-friendly web tool, the Falconer ShinyApp, to show how the combination of gene action and allele frequencies at causal loci translate to genetic variance and genetic variance components for a complex trait. The app can be used to demonstrate the relationship between a SNP effect size estimated from GWAS and the variation the SNP generates in the population, i.e., how locus-specific effects lead to individual differences in traits. In addition, it can also be used to demonstrate how within and between locus interactions (dominance and epistasis, respectively) usually do not lead to a large amount of nonadditive variance relative to additive variance, and therefore, that these interactions usually do not explain individual differences in a population.  相似文献

Summary A new species,Catenaria vermicola, is named and described. It attacks several plant-parasitic nematodes of economic importance in sugarcane soils of Louisiana. The fungus forms numerous zoospores which encyst on the cuticle, generally near natural openings of the nematode, thereby causing infection. Within the parasitized nematodes hyphae and sporangia quickly form and destroy the victim completely. The following plant-parasitic nematodes were attacked and destroyed:Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Criconemoides rusticum, Hemicycliophora gigas, Hoplolaimus tylenchiformis, Meloidogyne larvae,Pratylenchus brachyurus, P. zeae, Radopholus similis, Tylenchulus semipenetrans larvae,Tylenchorhynchus martini, andXiphinema chambersi.  相似文献

We have attempted to define the optimal time for tenolysis by evaluating the blood supply, the rupture rate, and the tensile strength of tenolysed and control tendons. In 128 chickens tenolysis was performed 1, 3, 6, 12, 16, and 24 weeks after primary tendon repair. Tenolysis at 1 and 3 weeks resulted in devascularization, weak tendons, and high rupture rates. Tenolysis at 6 weeks after the primary repair had mixed effects on the blood supply but weakened the tendon. Tenolysis at 12 weeks after the tendon repair did not weaken the tendon and resulted in an increased blood supply. Tenolysis at 16 and 24 weeks did not weaken the tendon, but had varied effects on the blood supply. We recommend an interval of 12 weeks between primary tendon repair and tenolysis.  相似文献

Despite their importance for understanding phylogeny, character evolution and classification, well-constrained homology relationships for posterior plating in crinoids have only recently been attempted. Here, we re-evaluate posterior plate homologies in all major crinoid lineages using development, fossil ontogenies and phylogenetic evidence. Based on these lines of evidence, we change terminology for some posterior plates to correct misnomers and make recommendations for updated terminology of others to better reflect homology. Among pentacrinoids (disparids, hybocrinids, eucladids, flexibles and articulates) the relative position of posterior interray plates, not their topology, reflects homology. From proximal to distal, pentacrinoid posterior plates are the radianal, anal X and right sac plate, regardless of the total number of plates in the adult calyx. Camerate posterior plating contrasts with pentacrinoids, but insufficient data are available to resolve homology relationships between these two clades. More examples of early post-larval ontogeny are needed in camerates and other Palaeozoic crinoids.  相似文献

Marine fisheries science is a broad field that is fundamentally concerned with sustainability across ecological, economic, and social dimensions. Ensuring the delivery of food, security, equity, and well-being while sustaining ecosystems in the face of rapid change is, by far, the main challenge facing marine fisheries. A tighter integration of modeling and empiricism is needed to confront this challenge. In particular, improved incorporation of empirically grounded and realistic representation of human behaviors into models will greatly enhance our ability to predict likely outcomes under alternative adaptive strategies. Challenges to this integration certainly exist, but many of these can be overcome via improved professional training that reduces cultural rifts between empiricists and modelers and between natural and social sciences, ideally ending the presumption that there is a divide between empiricism and modeling.  相似文献

Separation of chromosomes on the basis of buoyant density has proved difficult due to their high density and sensitivity to high ionic strength. Nycodenz is a new non-ionic gradient medium which offers significant advantages over previously described media for separation of chromosomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the banding characteristics of isolated mammalian metaphase chromosomes in Nycodenz gradients. The results indicate that chromosomes can be efficiently concentrated and separated from nuclei using Nycodenz gradients. Furthermore, chromosomes density-labeled with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) can be separated from unlabeled chromosomes in Nycodenz gradients. Nycodenz does not appear to alter chromosome morphology or protein complement. The introduction of Nycodenz represents a significant new tool for use in chromosome separation and purification.  相似文献
