The ubiquitous use of agrochemicals is one driver for the ongoing loss of insect biomass and diversity. Data show that field‐realistic concentrations of neonicotinoid insecticides can negatively affect both population density and the fitness of solitary bees. However, the underlying mechanisms for these effects remain poorly understood. Here, using an established semi‐field experimental set‐up and Osmia cornuta as a solitary bee model, we examined the effects of field‐realistic concentrations of a common neonicotinoid insecticide (clothianidin) on male larvae and adults. Besides measuring lethal (i.e., overwintering success and adult survival) and sub‐lethal endpoints (i.e., emergence mass and emergence duration), we examined, for the first time, potential effects on the male reproductive physiology of a solitary bee (i.e., sperm quantity and viability). The data revealed no significant effects on any of the measured response variables. This may be due to the low degree of clothianidin exposure (0.56 ng g?1) and/or the apparent low susceptibility of solitary bee larvae to neonicotinoids. Furthermore, it is conceivable that ideal foraging conditions, combined with optimal weather and lack of other environmental stressors, may have improved the ability of bees to cope with the insecticide. To reliably assess and understand the environmental hazards of agrochemicals, a holistic approach, including laboratory, semi‐field and field data is required. Knowledge of underlying mechanisms will help to mitigate the current global declines of insect populations.  相似文献

The present study showed that glomerulopressin decreased ovarian blood flow in normal dogs and that this effect could be inhibited by treatment with indomethacin. In addition diabetic dogs had a high plasma level of glomerulopressin and a low ovarian blood flow that was shown to increase after treatment with indomethacin. This suggests that the low ovarian blood flow in diabetis might be due to a prostaglandin synthesizing effect of glomerulopressin.  相似文献

The effect of cAMP and its dibutyryl analogue on the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and protein in active proliferating cells was studied. It was shown that cAMP (10(-3)--10(-4)M) caused stimulation of the biosynthesis of DNA and RNA in Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells and intensification of collagen biosynthesis in the chick embryo cartilage tissue in vitro. Dibutyryl -- cAMP (10(-3)--10(-4)M) has an inhibitory action on the biosynthesis of macromolecules both in EAC cells and embryonic cartilage tissue. Addition of cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors together with cAMP to the incubation media prevents the stimulation of macromolecular biosynthesis observed under the influence of cAMP. Studies on cAMP metabolism revealed that this compound is rapidly catabolized to AMP and adenosine. The latter enters the cells and incorporates into the adenyl nucleotide intracellular pool. The stimulant action of exogenous cAMP is related to its extracellular metabolism rather than to the intracellular effects of the nucleotide.  相似文献

Short-course preoperative radiotherapy (RT) is widely used in northern Europe for locally advanced resectable rectal cancer, but its role in the era of advanced imaging techniques is uncertain. Here, we reviewed articles and abstracts on SCRT published from 1974 through 2013 with the goal of identifying patients who might be best suited for short-course RT. We included relevant articles comparing surgery with or without preoperative radiation published before and after the advent of total mesorectal excision. We also analyzed two randomized trials directly comparing short-course RT with conventionally fractionated chemoradiation (the Polish Colorectal Study Group and the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group) that compared short-course RT with conventional chemoradiotherapy. We conclude from our review that short-course RT can be generally applied for operable rectal cancer and produces high rates of pelvic control with acceptable toxicity; it reduces local recurrence rates but does not increase overall survival. SCRT seems to be best used for tumors considered “low risk,” i.e., those that are >5 cm from the anal margin, without circumferential margin involvement, and involvement of fewer than 4 lymph nodes. Whether sequential chemotherapy can further improve outcomes remains to be seen, as does the best time for surgery (immediately or 6–8 weeks after RT). We further recommend that selection of patients for short-course RT should be based on findings from magnetic resonance imaging or transrectal ultrasonography.  相似文献

Despite their importance for understanding phylogeny, character evolution and classification, well-constrained homology relationships for posterior plating in crinoids have only recently been attempted. Here, we re-evaluate posterior plate homologies in all major crinoid lineages using development, fossil ontogenies and phylogenetic evidence. Based on these lines of evidence, we change terminology for some posterior plates to correct misnomers and make recommendations for updated terminology of others to better reflect homology. Among pentacrinoids (disparids, hybocrinids, eucladids, flexibles and articulates) the relative position of posterior interray plates, not their topology, reflects homology. From proximal to distal, pentacrinoid posterior plates are the radianal, anal X and right sac plate, regardless of the total number of plates in the adult calyx. Camerate posterior plating contrasts with pentacrinoids, but insufficient data are available to resolve homology relationships between these two clades. More examples of early post-larval ontogeny are needed in camerates and other Palaeozoic crinoids.  相似文献

Marine fisheries science is a broad field that is fundamentally concerned with sustainability across ecological, economic, and social dimensions. Ensuring the delivery of food, security, equity, and well-being while sustaining ecosystems in the face of rapid change is, by far, the main challenge facing marine fisheries. A tighter integration of modeling and empiricism is needed to confront this challenge. In particular, improved incorporation of empirically grounded and realistic representation of human behaviors into models will greatly enhance our ability to predict likely outcomes under alternative adaptive strategies. Challenges to this integration certainly exist, but many of these can be overcome via improved professional training that reduces cultural rifts between empiricists and modelers and between natural and social sciences, ideally ending the presumption that there is a divide between empiricism and modeling.  相似文献
